    A Note from the Director

L et us take you back to the 1930’s where a young girl leaves home to go to the Big Apple to become a dancer in a Broadway show. The leading lady has an accident and the young girl must take her place on Opening Night. A dream? YES. A heavy plot? NO. Amazing music and musical numbers? YES. And pure entertainment? YES. This is the kind of show that wants the audience to sit back and relax and join us on this nostalgic journey when life was a bit more carefree and simple.

    Sincerely, —Bill Starr

In August, WVLO lost one of its most valued subscribers and volunteers for she had been with this organization since the early 1970’s. Dawn was a wonderful cook and was responsible for catering our Opening Night’s delicious dishes for many of those early years. She and her husband, Richard, also managed the lobby concession stand for several years. Dawn had a lovely voice and performed in seven of our shows from 1968 through 1980, and not only made her own costumes, but helped the costumers dress other cast members. She was always ready and eager to volunteer for whatever task needed to be done and she will be greatly missed. We extend our deepest sympathy to her family and if you would like to make a donation in her honor to one of her charities, her favorites were Make-a-Wish and Second Harvest Food Bank.

HELP US “GET THE WORD OUT”—If you participate in Facebook, please spread the word about our musical productions. “Like us” on Facebook (we already have a page there for WVLO) so we invite you to become a partner with us in publicizing our musicals and encouraging others to attend.

Let’s work together to fill this theater. The performers who share their time and talent deserve a full theater of enthusiastic patrons.

MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHTMarty McHan began his WVLO orchestra debut in 1976 in our production of “Sweethearts” and this show will be his 66th with us. The instruments you will see him play could be tenor saxophone, clarinet, oboe or English horn. He has played “42nd Street” six times and this will be his 8th show with Bobbie Howe as Music Director. He has also played 46 shows with her in an orchestra pit. He has played throughout the Bay Area and this marks his 210th

show overall, with 113 of them in this theater! He taught History and German in the SCUSD for 36 years and has been married for 53 years to a wonderful woman who spent 43 of those years patiently allowing him to be gone for over 4,000 nights of rehearsals and shows! They have a son and a daughter and he hopes to become a “grandpa” by the end of this show. Marty says his prized treasure is an Outstanding Musician Award he received from WVLO in 2004. Our casts and crews always love his commitment to our shows because he bakes them special cookies during the run! We are always happy to have him in our orchestra, whether in the pit or on stage! Thanks, Marty, for being such a dedicated and faithful musician to Community Theater.

He is also an author, with four science fiction novels published under his pen name, Robert Adrian. WHO’S WHO ON OUR STAFFEarl Masuda (Producer) This marks Earl’s 28th WVLO produc-tion. He’s been in the Cast, Crew, or on the Staff. Elizabeth Dale (Assistant Producer) Elizabeth produced the first show of last season, Bullets Over Broadway and now steps into a “helper” role for this one. For the past 30 years, she has served in almost every staff position, in addition to assisting most of the other positions. She has served on the Board of Directors for several years, and has always received major support from her daughter, Julie and husband, Lester, during their 62 years of marriage. She

is one of our most valued volunteers.Nancy Kwong (Associate Producer) Nancy returns for her 21st assignment in her 38 years of involvement with WVLO. This season she served as Producer for Spamalot, Assistant Producer for the first two shows, and has performed, choreographed and served as a Board Member throughout those years as well. Bill has been fortunate to direct and/or choreograph all over the Bay Area for over a 150 productions and exercising his motto “Keeping

Live Theatre ALIVE”. It has been a pleasure working with this supportive staff, crew, and a cast who always gave 100%. He feels like WVLO is his 2nd home.

Roberta “Bobbie’ Howe (Music Director) “Bobbie” returns to WVLO to wield her baton again for us, having last conducted our Fiddler on the Roof in 2013. She is delighted to lead a wonderful group of musician friends, singers and dancers through this lively show. Bobbie is a veteran of local musical theater, having played in the orchestra or conducted for nearly 200 productions since high school. Recently retired from 15 years of teaching

elementary school bands in San Jose, she has now taken on the role of President of the Country Woman’s Club of Campbell, an all-volunteer non-profit whose mission is to raise money for academic, music and art scholarships for students in the CUHSD. (Retirement? What’s that?) She would like to dedicate this show to her mother, Sally Howe, who loved musical theater and would have been here for almost every performance. Many thanks to husband Michael Maida, playing Reed 1 in the orchestra.Jonathan Campos (Vocal Director & Billy Lawlor) Jonathan returns to a WVLO staff position after serving as Assistant Vocal Director for Sister Act, Catch Me If You Can & Bullets Over Broadway as well as performing in this production. Angela currently works as a product manager at Google and sends love

to her family and friends for their constant support.Dawn Johnson (Stage Manager) 42nd Street will be Dawn’s 37th show with WVLO—the 11th as our Stage Manager. She has appeared onstage in thirteen of our productions—most recently as a tap dancing gangster in Bullets Over Broadway, and in a brief cameo role in Spamalot. The rest of the time she can be found backstage or in the light booth, as part of our tech crew. She has been the recipient of our Technical Award three times, is a past

Captain’s Cape winner, and was honored with the Jean Hutchins Award in 2013. She has also appeared onstage at SCP, SBMT and ATC. Lisa Armenta (Co-Costume Designer) Lisa first worked with the WVLO costume team in Bullets Over Broadway and designed our last production of Spamalot. She started sewing in her Grandma’s kitchen during her summer visits and is delighted to share her love of sewing with our cast and the Westmont Technical Theater students who she has mentored over the past 5+ years. When she’s not sewing, Lisa works as an Occupational Therapist at a local

elementary school.Sue Howell (Co-Costume Designer) Sue returns after co costuming Bullets Over Broadway last fall and A Chorus Line in March 2017. She has additional credits, including coaching theatre students in costuming at Leigh HS

and cutting and sewing at PHS. Sue worked for over ten years at Ballet SJ in the costume shop starting in 2005. Sue now works in the uniform room for the employees at SAP Center and ushers at Mountain Winery and various venues in downtown San Jose. In her free time enjoys her almost 5 years old granddaughter and goes to hockey games.

Shannon Sullivan (Hair & Make-Up) Shannon has been per-forming ever since she could talk, however her passion for the stage ignited in middle school when she started Musical Theater. Over the years she has performed in numerous musicals and more recently on TV and film sets. Shannon is also working as a Licensed Esthetician and Makeup Artist. The magical thing is she gets to combine her love for the stage and makeup artistry

by working as the Hair and Makeup Designer for multiple productions. This is her first production with WVLO and she couldn’t be more excited to work with everyone involved.
