GIVING THE ENTIRE TERRITORY TEAM THE VERY LATEST INFORMATION

AND CALENDARS OF UPCOMING EVENTS

This is what you territory team is here for—Steve, Terie, Trent, Heather, Melissa, Marti, and Stephen. We are

here solely to be your ever-ready support, guidance, and resource, all in the service of your success

San Diego Kicks Off 2014  It was quite an event, the San

Diego‐area TKO this past Tuesday,

January 21, 2014, at the Courtyard

by Marrio  San Diego Central.  As

you will be able to see on the next

six pages,  it was an even ul day as

well.

22 managers and home‐office lead‐

ers gathered together at 9 am for a

roughly three‐hour “manager's

mee ng,”  going over the year just

passed and, especially, looking

ahead with strategies for 2014.

Following a manger’s lunch at

noon, upwards of 92 people  met

for the main TKO session. Every

chair was taken and there was

SRO!

We honored Mike Minney for his

now‐over‐40‐year career with CLA;

reviewed the main corporate mes‐

sage for the year courtesy of Kyle

Addy, and discussed comp changes

with Steve Polk.

Terie Bradford led a sec on on

Direct Sales, Bob Ruff one on bro‐

ker sales, and Todd Mason one on

Public Sector.

Then it was cocktails, dinner, and

awards!

A good  me was had by all—and

basically on budget to boot! More

pics to follow!

THE ENERGY BUS Step 1: Create Your Vision Gather your team and spend me developing a vision for where you want your bus to go. You may

present a vision to them and ask for input or you may start with a blank slate and develop the vision together. You might

create one vision or several visions. Ques ons to ask What are our goals? Think into the future. What do we see? What do we

hope to accomplish? ‐ Jon Gordon, The Energy Bus, p. 159

You have to do the hard things.

You have to make the call you’re afraid to make.

You have to get up earlier than you want to get up.

You have to give more than you get in return right away.

You have to care more about others than they care about you.

You have to fight when you are already injured, bloody, and sore.

You have to feel unsure and insecure when playing it safe seems smarter.

You have to lead when no one else is following you yet.

You have to invest in yourself even though no one else is.

You have to look like a fool while you’re looking for answers you don’t have.

You have to grind out the details when it’s easier to shrug them off.

You have to deliver results when making excuses is an op on.

You have to search for your own explana ons even when you’re told to accept the “facts.”

You have to make mistakes and look like an idiot.

You have to try and fail and try again.

You have to run faster even though you’re out of breath.

You have to be kind to people who have been cruel to you.

You have to meet deadlines that are unreasonable and deliver results that are unparalleled.

You have to be accountable for your ac ons even when things go wrong.

You have to keep moving towards where you want to be no ma er what’s in front of you. You have to do the hard

things. The things that no one else is doing. The things that scare you. The things that make you wonder how much longer

you can hold on.  Those are the things that define you. Those are the things that make the difference between living a life of

mediocrity or outrageous success. “The hard things are the easiest things to avoid. To excuse away. To pretend like they

don’t apply to you.” The simple truth about how ordinary people accomplish outrageous feats of success is that they do the

hard things that smarter, wealthier, more qualified people don’t have the courage — or despera on — to do. Do the hard

things. You might be surprised at how amazing you really are.—Daniel Waldschmidt, Edgy Conversa ons

Carma’s note: Some mes that heat

made me want to crawl under the

nearest rock. But, if I really looked

deep inside, I realized it was this

heat that kept me jazzed and ener‐

gized and waking up each and every

morning. It’s not so much the heat

that is the problem, but how you

perceive it. Percep on is everything.

Entrepreneurs have a unique way of

perceiving the world that is very

different from someone with and

employee mindset.

Thinking about star ng your own

business? Beware! Below are 10

signs that you just may not be cut

out to be an entrepreneur.

#10. You can’t stand the heat. Be‐

fore you jump into self‐

employment, make sure you’re

very comfortable being uncomfort‐

able. Every day, you’ll need to try

something new for the first  me.

You have to be ready to put your‐

self out there and do things you’ve

never done before‐‐all with less

financial security.

#9. You have professional ADD. If

you get bored and frustrated easily,

or you’re the type of person who

likes to go in a new direc on every

60 days, business ownership may

not be for you. Being an entrepre‐

neur requires an unwavering laser

focus. Achieving business goals

takes  me and persistence.

#8. You get stage fright. As a busi‐

ness owner, you are the primary

spokesperson for your company.

You need to be ready and willing to

take center stage and spread the

word whenever possible. If you’re

uncomfortable in the spotlight or

you don’t like public speaking, you

be er master these competencies

before you launch.

#7. You hate roller coasters. As a

business owner, you never know

what’s around the corner‐‐it could

be a really steep hill or a gut‐

wrenching free fall. There will be

countless ups and downs, and you

need to be prepared to hang on

and enjoy the ride.

As a business owner, you never

know what’s around the corner.

#6. You think complexity is cool.

Complexity may be cool, but it’s

hard to create, market and sell. The

truth is that the simplest solu ons

are the most successful. As a busi‐

ness owner, you need the ability to

dis ll concepts to their simplest

forms so that they can be easily

communicated and implemented.

#5. You can’t explain the steps of

shoe tying. Tying a shoe is compli‐

cated. So is running a business. You

have to be able to delegate tasks

and to direct others. This means

you need the ability to break big

ideas into easy, ac onable steps for

implementa on. Big ideas are a

dime a dozen. Knowing how to

implement them is the game

changer.

#4. You don’t believe in marke ng.

Marke ng makes the business

world go round. If you don’t believe

it and embrace it, you’ll never suc‐

ceed. Be ready to dedicate effort

and a decent budget to the task of

marke ng your company. And give

your marke ng  me to work, using

a variety of mediums. There’s no

silver bullet.

#3. You’re easily winded. Once you

get past the adrenaline rush of

star ng your own business, you’ll

encounter a por on of the journey

called the “middle mile.” Frankly,

the middle mile is where you face

challenge and drudgery. Your feet

will hurt and your breathing will be

labored. Despite these inconven‐

iences, you must place one foot in

front of the other and press on.

#2. You’re a problem passer. In

business, there are problems that

must be decisively resolved by the

owner. Some mes, customers and

employees will be unhappy with

your decisions and that’s OK. Suc‐

cessful entrepreneurs never post‐

pone difficult choices.

#1. You’re on the quest for quick

cash. Profit is the result of produc‐

ve business. It is not WHY you are

in business. You are in business to

solve problems and to serve others.

If you find a way to deliver a be er

solu on or service than your com‐

pe tors, you will make plenty of

money. But it doesn’t happen over‐

night. If you want to make quick

cash, business ownership may not

be the right gig for you.

As the above pi alls exemplify,

star ng a business isn’t easy, and it

certainly isn’t glamorous. But it can

be extraordinarily worthwhile and

sa sfying. If any of the 10 warning

signs above don’t give you pause,

you just may be a good entrepre‐

neurial candidate.

Passing this along in case you missed it on Propr. Educating your accounts on My Ac-count Administration is a great service play and could put a little something extra in an openers pocket each quarter! Have a great afternoon! Promote My Account Administration, Earn $200 We’ll reward you for promoting the Plan Administrator website The “My Account Administration for Plan Administrators” website is a great service we provide our plan administrators. The site provides the account access to the following services: online bill, employee administration, payroll submission and CCH HR Answers Now. We’re offering you an incentive to promote this service to your existing or new ac-counts. Each quarter we will review open-ers’ block of business to determine who has the highest adoption rate of using My Ac-count Administration for Plan Administra-tors (the highest percentage of accounts log-ging into the website each month).

The opener with the highest adoption of accounts using the site that quarter will receive a $200 Amazon gift card. In addition, the opener will receive a resource from the In-force Growth and Development team to help you analyze your in-force block of business for re-work opportunities, develop strategies to add new products to existing accounts and improve working conditions. When approaching your account about using the Plan Administrator website, use the Discovery Record in AIMS, available 24/7/365, to view current ser-vices and key account information in order to build a stronger value proposi-tion. Learn more about the features of My Account Administration for Plan Ad-ministrators in the Value Added Ser-vices section on Propr, including how you can demo the site yourself. There’s also a recorded webinar to walk you through the site.

TO SEND TO THE PAs: With all that you have on your plate, your account administration should be as easy as possible. The website Golfsmith.com has

a sec on for  ps on be ering

your game.  In that sec on, they

write, “For beginning golfers,

the first step in learning the

game is to master the funda‐

mentals ‐‐ the elements that all

good golf swings have in com‐

mon.” in another sec on, they

come back to this theme, saying

that “A repeatable golf swing is

one the golfer is able to execute

with precision over and over,

whether on the prac ce range

by himself or at a crucial stage of a

match.” Similarly, Clark Rickman at

Detec ng365.com writes, “Anyone that

performs anything

at an extremely high

level realizes that

li le things work

together to make

big things happen.

The secret to making

an extremely high

percentage of basketball shots, throwing

a bunch of strikes, or anything – even

killer cross‐s tching I imagine – is all

about the rou ne. If you watch a profes‐

sional basketball player that has a very

high free‐throw percentage, you will see

that he does exactly the same things

every single  me he shoots a free

throw.” The same thing applies in direct

sales—it’s mastering the repeatable

basics that lead to short‐term and espe‐

cially long‐term sales

success. The “Weekly

Calendar” below is the
