Message from the President Karen Spencer, Flagship Cruises & Events
Greetings! Wow! I can’t believe it is already March!! March is a significant and busy month in many ways, it is Women’s History Month (a month that pays tribute to the generations
of women whose contributions have proven invaluable to society), it is American Red Cross Month (founded by Clara Barton, a humanitarian organization dedicated to helping people in need), it is National Kidney Month (an organization helping raise awareness about chronic kidney disease), but are you aware of the lesser known significant days in March -
March 9th – National “Get Over it!” Day – How many times do you tell someone to deal with it? Daily?? March 16th – National “Everything You Do is Right” Day – Isn’t this true every day?!?! March 19th – National “Let’s Laugh” Day – Only one day for this? We should make a point to laugh everyday! March 30th – National “I Am in Control” Day – Is this the day you can officially let everyone know you’re in control or is this declaration because every other day you’re out of control?! Hopefully one of the monthly causes/days inspires you and puts a smile on your face!! Also in March we approach the first day of spring. For those of us who have lived in Southern California our entire lives, the four seasons we experience are summer, after summer, next summer and almost summer. But for those who have truly experienced seasons, spring is a time of rejuvenation and renewal, a fresh beginning after being cooped up for the winter, a time when we do our “spring cleaning.” [President’s Message continued on Page 4]

Chapter News and Notes MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Karen Spencer, Flagship Cruises and Events [Continued from Page 1]
Spring cleaning isn’t just about sorting through things and getting rid of physical clutter. It can also be about taking stock of who you are and how others see you. It’s a chance to redefine yourself and if desired change your expectations of what you want and where you want to be. Sort of a resolution reboot!! One way to “reboot” may be to change things up a bit, or do something you’ve never done before. Most people love routines, routines are comfortable. They are good in that they help you do what you want in the time needed. However, sometimes routines can quickly become boring. By changing up your routine you just might find it works better. Another “reboot” may be to attempt something you’ve never done before. Even though it might make you nervous or excited thinking about it, once you’ve identified something, just do it! At our February Chapter meeting we discovered how important it is to keep our minds active. Our guest Speaker, Mary Ball from Alzheimer’s San Diego presented us with a very informative program on Alzheimer’s. She explained the statistics of developing Alzheimer’s (1 in 10 people over the age of 65 will develop it, 1 in 3 over the age of 85), the symptoms and signs of the disease, risk factors and important tips for care givers. Although we learned there is not a cure for the disease, diet and exercise can help. Also mixing up our routines and attempting new things that challenge our minds and our bodies are beneficial. I thought by doing my crossword puzzle every day I was challenging my mind, but as we learned, your brain adapts to the same challenge day in and day out. What helps is to do different things!! Learn a new skill, adopt a new hobby, learn a new language or learn to play an instrument. So this March remember to “Spring Clean” your clutter, whether it is sorting through “things” or challenging your body and mind!! As always thank you to Margie Wilson, Colette Morel and Linda Kent, our Programs Committee for planning our wonderful event! Thank you to Member firms Barney & Barney for hosting the event and Continental Catering for providing our amazing dinner. Also special thanks to their representatives Kris Hilly and Maria Ayon for all of the time and effort they contributed to making our meeting a success. Our next chapter meeting will also be a firm night on March 15th at Fleming & Associates, with Jamie Fleming being our guest speaker!! Hope to see you all there!
