Reconciliation: A Return to Grace
Lent is our time within the liturgical year where the Church asks us to turn away from sin and to come back to a state of grace. Reconciliation is one of my favorite Sacraments. As a convert, I was kind of thrown off when I found out during RCIA that I would be encouraged to go often. I was so scared for when my moment would come. I remember feeling like my stomach was going to hurry away with the amount of butterflies taking flight the first time I sought out the Sacrament.
I soon discovered that Reconciliation was such a hidden treasure within our Catholic faith. I was able to pour out my heart to someone who cared to listen. How often in today’s world does that hap-pen? Most people will ask how you are, but will not care to hear your real answer. There I was in the middle of this Sacrament for the first time, and the priest on the other side took listening a step further and prayed with me, as well as offered ad-vice on how to improve my life and relationship with God. I could not believe that all of this was a Sacrament of the Church! The devil will always do all that he can to keep us away from this beautiful Sacrament. I am often afraid that people will find out I am actually a sinner or afraid of appearing weak to other people. I once “ugly cried” for an hour through a Confession in the pews of a Church with total strangers around. That night I was saved by the beautiful humility of that amaz-ing Confession. I was saved from my vanity and my shame in being a sinner that I wished to hide and run away from, something the devil tried to amplify, as he often does. Not every time I have been to Confession has been perfect. It is never too late to return to God and turn away from sin!
I pray that as we have a Reconciliation Weekend coming up March 12-13, you receive the infinite mercy and love available to you! What a blessing in a really disconnected world to have such a beautiful Sacrament where you connect with God and another human being so intimately. If you need a little help or encouragement, check out this free video with Fr. Mike Schmitz, called The Pow-er of Confession: https://youtu.be/_C4hGM3ItKk
Just remember: God loves you and He is always ready to receive your Confession. No sin is too great for His love and mercy. Pray for our parish, as we pray for each of you.
With the grace of God, Manisha M. Divecha, Director of Communications

11 Cents: To Judge or Rejoice
To judge or rejoice: how different are those two op-tions? They may however, be two options that we are faced with on a regular basis.
We judge others for their sins, but also for their hu-man imperfections, which is wrong and breeds negativity in us. Imagine that you know people who have imperfections: they talk a lot, often run late, or slurp soup. Talking a lot sometimes comes from people who are lonely and get excited that they have someone to share with. Being late in America is offensive, but in other parts of the world it is not offensive in the least. Lastly, in Japan it is a great compliment to the chef if you slurp your soup! Instead of judging people for their imperfections, or being annoyed with them, we have another option; rejoice! As the Body of Christ, we are complimen-tary, no one person is strong in every area, so we need each other’s support. When we see another’s shortcomings, we can rejoice that God has blessed us with a strength in that area, to compliment that brother or sister of ours. For example, instead of getting annoyed that your spouse always runs late, you could rejoice that you balance the relationship by being better at being on-time. Maybe their being late, helps you be more receptive to living in the present moment, and not be too future-oriented. This is a more positive perspective on how we can view each other’s “faults.”
Lastly, if we see another’s shortcomings, it is right to rejoice and acknowledge that: only by the grace of God and not by our own goodness, do we not suffer that specific imperfection. This should be a thought of humility and gratitude, which can save us from the sin of judging others.
Let’s not judge, let’s rejoice!
