“… then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve …

Joshua 24:15

As a parent, what commitment am I making when I enroll my child in the Religious Education Program? You’re committing to living out the promise you made for your child in baptism — to raise your child in the Catholic faith. Our religious education program is here to support you as you strive to fulfill that promise. Regular class attendance and participation in the liturgical, ministerial, and social life of the parish make the connection between your personal and family spirituality and the life of the Church.

What if I am struggling with certain things about the Church? The struggle is good; it means you take your faith seriously. We’re here to help you understand the faith more deeply so that you can fulfill your role as the primary teacher for your child on their spiritual journey.

How many years does my child have to go to classes? Ideally, every family would enroll in our program at least by the time their child is in 1st Grade (although our program begins with children as young as 3) and continue through their 8th grade year. The curriculum we use, Finding God by Loyola Press, is designed so that every year has a different focus, building on the knowledge of the previous year. Preparation for First Communion is a two-year process, normally 1st & 2nd Grades. Preparation for Confirmation is also a two-year process, normally 7th & 8th Grades. Older children will be integrated into the sacramental preparation processes under the guidance of the Director of Faith Formation. Like the curriculum in your child’s secular classes, it wouldn’t make sense to take your child out of school after 2nd grade and then send them back in 7th and think that they’ll be able to understand the concepts presented to them in their math, science, English or history classes without having learned the lessons of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades in between.

Program? Pick up a brochure in the vestibules for them and put them in touch with Karie Ferrell at [email protected]; phone (847) 864-0333 ext 203

Strength in Hope

In the pilgrimage of this life, hidden with Christ in God and free from enslavement to wealth, they aspire to those riches which remain forever and generously dedicate themselves wholly to the advancement of the kingdom of God and to the reform and improvement of the temporal order in a Christian spirit. Among the trials of this life they find strength in hope, convinced that "the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come that will be revealed in us" (Rom. 8:18). - Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity (1965), 4

Saturday—June 22, 2019: Memorial of Saints Thomas Moore and John Fisher

Reflect: Religious Freedom Week is a fitting time to reflect not only on religious liberty, but on what it means to be both American and Catholic. We remember the martyrs Saints Thomas Moore and John Fisher, in part, because they were steadfast in the truth, and thus exemplify courage in the exercise of conscience. Thomas Moore carried out his lay vocation as a civil servant, while John Fisher lived out the clerical vocation as a most faithful bishop. At the same time, when forced to choose between the king of England and Christ the King of the Universe, they adhered to Jesus and His Church. We need the fortitude and wisdom to animate the Church today, as we navigate these tumultuous times. Saints John Fisher and Thomas Moore, pray for us!

Pray: that, like Saints Thomas Moore and John Fisher, we might have the wisdom and the courage to be good servants of our country, though always servants of God first.

Sunday—June 23, 2019: Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Reflect: In January 2018, Pope Francis warned that Christians “face challenges today that demean human dignity: they flee from situations of conflict and poverty; are victims of the trafficking of human beings…; they suffer hardships and hunger, in a world ever richer in means and poorer in love, where inequalities continue to increase.” This is especially true in the Middle East, where wars have caused thousands, including Christians, to flee from Syria and Iraq into Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and beyond, where their presence taxes meager resources.

Pray: that our Christian sisters and brothers in the Middle East, and all religious minorities, who are suffering from attacks by extremists and interminable conflicts may be freed from violent persecution.

Saturday—June 29, 2019: Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul

Reflect: Pope Francis has spoken of the throwaway culture, a culture in which people are treated like objects to be discarded when they are not “useful.” That culture can manifest itself in how our society treats people in the criminal justice system. Catholic teaching on religious liberty is rooted in the dignity of the human person. That dignity is not lost when a person commits a crime.

Pray: that the dignity and right to religious freedom of incarcerated persons would be respected.

Flyers with the entire week’s Reflections, Prayers, and Actions are available in the vestibules. Visit: http://usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/religious-freedom-week/index.cfm

So why not sing it on the Fourth? Get ready by meditating on the words over the next ten days.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;

He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;

He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,

They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence

by the dim and flaring lamps: His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:

"As ye deal with my condemners, so with you my grace shall deal";

Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,

Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;

He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat;

Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant, my feet!

Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,

With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me. As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, While God is marching on.

(Julia Ward Howe, Nov. 18/19, 1861)
