Finding someone to advise you on your finances is a huge decision we all face, but knowing what to look for can help save you time, money and stress.

Whether you are transitioning jobs and have a 401k with a previous employer, or you simply have some extra cash you want to put in the market, hiring a financial advisor is tough. With so many options, it’s hard to know where to look and who to choose.

Aside from looking at a financial advisor’s credentials, expertise, and expe-rience, there are other important characteristics to look for: honor, integrity, and transparency. No matter what services you want from an advisor, they are handling your money, and ultimately your well-being. Knowing that your money is in the hands of a trustworthy advisor is crucial.

Chicago-based, John Eiduk, CPA, CFP, has been in financial services since 2011. In September 2015, he founded Elite Asset Management believing there is a better way to manage portfolios for investors. The firm is an indepen-dent, fee-only registered investment advisory firm (RIA) that offers a suite of portfolios known as their investment strategies. Each portfolio is designed to serve multiple investor personalities and styles, as each strategy has a varying degree of strategic and tactical investments.

“The client-advisor relationship is sacred, and the foundation needs to be trust,” Eiduk says. “Clients should understand why they are working with a particular advisor.”

There are many questions you should be able to answer about your current advisor or any future advisors.

The first step to consider is compensation. Many advisors’ fee structures are vague and difficult to comprehend; you want an advisor that is transparent with his or her fee structure, and you should know your client fee. A 1-1.5 per-cent management fee for your total financial assets is appropriate. Also, note if your advisor receives commission. Advisors who earn commission rather than an asset-based rate may feel the incentive to steer you in a particular direction. After their fee structure is laid out, determine the type of responsibility your advisor will have: fiduciary or suitability. The fiduciary standard has the highest level of accountability to the client, meaning that your advisor must place your interest above his or hers. In this structure your advisor must make recommen-dations that are the best for you, even if those options result in less income for

him or her. EAM upholds the fiduciary standard with each of its clients.

Next, find out how long the advisor has been in practice. Ask what pro-fessional certifications, licenses or designations he or she has. There are various types of certifications.

Certified Financial Planners (CFP) handle planning for retirement, saving for education, managing taxes and in-surance coverage. CFPs bring togeth-er all the pieces of a financial life. Cer-tified Public Accountants (CPA) are experts in taxation and well-versed in other areas of finance, too.

Chartered Life Underwriters (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultants (ChFC) are typically associated with insurance companies. The main dif-ference between CFPs versus CLUs and ChFCs is that CFPs are required to pass a comprehensive board exam.

Eiduk’s credentials as a CPA and CFP demonstrates a commitment to ex-cellence and that combination is very rare in the financial services field.

Some advisors may only offer estate planning, insurance, portfolio man-agement or tax planning, while others help you manage your investments, perform financial analyses or assist in general financial planning. Determine if you are seeking a single advisor to help you develop your holistic goals, or you just need a certain service.

When it comes to a single service, such as investing, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Inquire about their investing decisions, what they do in various market climates, or how they would handle a typical investment situation.

At the end of the day, ask yourself if you feel comfortable with this person. Dealing with an intimate issue, such as money, requires a connection and sense of trust with whomever you choose.

In the past few years, we’ve regularly heard people

refer to Chi in common conversation. We know it

is pronounced “chee,” and we’ve seen it spelled a

couple of different ways – “Chi” or “Qi” But what is

it, really?

The word ‘Qi’ comes to us from Asia and is

commonly translated as “energy” or “life force.” But

every indigenous culture around the world – from

Asia across Europe to North America, and from

the top of the Arctic to the tip of Africa and South

America – has its own take on this concept. Over

the next few months, we will explore Qi from the

perspectives of several different cultures in this

column.

Although traditions may vary from culture to culture,

they share basic concepts. One common idea is

chakras. Chakras are swirling globes of energy

throughout the bodymind system that keep you

vibrant, healthy and alive. Although we commonly

associate chakras with India, the idea of centers of

energy in the body that nurture and strengthen our

life force is common across the world.

Chakras organize and regulate your energy. They

receive, assimilate and transmit the life force that

is in you. When you increase the power of your

chakras’ vibrations, you upgrade the quality of

your cellular intelligence. You amplify the energy

that improves health and happiness, and you build

mental strength and spiritual fitness. In fact, learning

to clear them helps keep you fit – both physically

and spiritually.

There are seven main chakras and several smaller

ones all over the body. The seven main chakras are

centered at the very core of you – right in the center

of your body in front of your spine. They ascend

from the tailbone to the top of the head. They

contain the colors of the rainbow, starting at the

base of the spine with red, and ending at the crown

of the head with purple.

1st – Root – Physical – The right to

be and to have – Red

2nd – Navel – Emotional – The right

to feel – Orange

3rd – Solar Plexus – Ego – The right

to act – Yellow

4th – Heart – Social – The right to

love and be loved – Green

5th – Throat – Creative – The right

to hear and speak – Blue

6th – Third Eye – Archetypal – The

right to see – Indigo

7th – Crown – Universal – The right

to know – Purple

called chi, anyway?

recommend getting more sleep. We Americans are so sleep-deprived. Once that is factored in, the mind becomes the most important element because it reflects the spirit of your heart and soul. Chakra development has a positive effect on both mind and body. It usually results in a renewed zest for life and a sense of inner sturdiness. You acquire an elegant map for revitalizing your body and mind to make them compatible. It prepares the way for a gentle opening of consciousness and supports a pleasing view of your life and world.

SO . . . HOW DO WE kEEP OUR QI HEALTHY, STRONG AND POSITIvE?The simple answer is – doo, doo-doo, DOO – LIFESTYLE. According to the classics, the key can be found in the following:

• A simple and healthy diet • Moderate exercise • Adequate sleep • Meaningful work• Good family and community relationships • Right-minded thoughts and actions • Regular periods of quiet time for meditation and contemplation

Of course, life in early 21st Century America doesn’t make all of this easy. However, all of it is within reach. But, I have to admit that it takes some determination to get there. If I were given the challenge of picking one thing from the above list that would most impact the health and positive attitude of most of us, I would have to

Eve Alfillé’s prolific designs stem far beyond making a fashion statement. Her intricate jewelry weaves the past and present into one.

Rare is it when we find jewelry

that tells a story. Even more rare

is when we find jewelry that

allows us to tell our own story.

That is the concept behind

French-born jewelry designer,

Eve Alfillé.

Alfillé, jewelry designer and

founder of the Eve J. Alfillé

Ltd. Gallery, opened her studio

in the North Shore suburb of

Evanston in 1987. She began

designing jewelry in 1973 after

obtaining degrees in economics

and linguistics and a career in

archaeology. Alfillé’s prolific

designs are unlike that of

any jewelry collection you’ve

seen, bringing the past to the

present by combining a time,

place or person with a cool,

contemporary twist.

The designer incorporates history

into all of her designs. In fact, her

interest in jewelry stemmed from

its historical roots.

It all began when Alfillé

was a field archaeologist.

During her digs, she would

unearth artifacts of all types,

but no matter where she

was searching, she always

found jewelry. She says that,

historically, jewelry was usually

worn as a symbol that guarded

or protected the individual.

And often, it was worn to hang

over the heart. Jewelry was not

just decorative, it had deeper

meanings and roots in a variety

of a belief systems. Alfillé

believes that jewelry today has

the power to do that as well –

thus the genesis of her business.

“[Jewelry is] something

that transcends your daily

existence,” she says. “Something

that has a certain power. And

those who wear a piece would

Evanston’s Hidden Gem

11 imagenorthshore.com

never be the same without it.

I would say when people, the

majority women, come to us,

they usually come because

there is a need.”

The need could be as simple as

women rewarding themselves

for something they’ve

accomplished, being a mother,

achieving new career goals,

or simply to treat themselves.

But what really makes Alfillé’s

jewelry so special to her

customers is that every piece

has its own story.

Her rings, for example, have

a personal story all their own.

She says that the outside of the

ring is the part that everyone

sees, but there needs to be

something for the woman, too.

To achieve this, she sets a gem,

“A secret stone” Eve calls it, on

the back of the band for the

wearer to enjoy!

“[Each gem] represents that

you are going to take care of

yourself,” Alfillé says. “As women,

sometimes we feel that our role

is to take care of everyone else

before taking care of ourselves.

And this is a small reminder

that, without you, a lot of things

wouldn’t happen. You have to

value yourself.”

Famous artists, such as Matisse,

nature, or influential and historic

time periods often inspire her

collections. Alfillé’s designs

extend far beyond fashion; they

represent self-expression and

finding a place for each person

in the world. And like the

artifacts she unearthed in her

archaeological digs, she hopes

her jewelry will have that same

impact as it is handed down

generation after generation.

Alfillé’s jewelry allows women to

tell their own stories. Through

her meaningful designs, each

woman is able to celebrate

and honor her own history and

moments in her life.

There is a theme that is commonly lost in the

cacophony of the stretched faces of reality

shows, societal images of unnaturally enhanced

bodies, and overall stigma attached to the world of

plastic surgery. Not everyone is looking to create a

different body. Some patients just want their own body back.

That journey typically begins with conventional

methods of self-improvement. A healthy diet and

an appropriate exercise regimen, often under the

guidance of professionals, are the first steps in any

transformation. In many, if not most cases these

methods alone will give people the desired results.

Yet even in the context of successful weight loss,

diet and exercise may leave individuals dissatisfied

with their appearance. Why? Many women

experience deflated sagging breasts, and men and

women may encounter excess skin in the abdomen

as well as unsightly stretch marks.

Restorative plastic surgery aims to rejuvenate

specific areas of the body that have changed

with time and weight fluctuations. Both men

and women are candidates, though it’s typically

referred to as the “mommy makeover” surgery

for women. Childbearing, for example, rapidly

expands the abdomen, leading to skin redundancy

and stretch marks. The abdominal muscles, long

strips of muscle that run up and down on either

side of the belly button, can separate from one

another creating a widened torso, loss of the hour-

glass figure, and bulging out from the abdomen.

The breasts may enlarge and atrophy making them

sag lower and lose upper pole volume and height

associated with youthful breasts. All of these

changes may be immune to diet and exercise.

Tummy tuck surgery is designed to remove

excess abdominal skin and is often performed in

conjunction with liposuction to address persistent

pockets of excess fat. Particularly with postpartum

women, the muscles can be tightened during

an outpatient basis and typically takes 3-4 hours

depending on the particular needs of the patient.

Patients can immediately resume activities such

as walking, going up and down stairs, and picking

up light objects. They should expect to miss 1-2

weeks of work and are advised to have someone

help with childcare during that period as well. A

compression garment is worn for several weeks

following the surgery. Patients can resume more

rigorous activity by six weeks after their operation

and are completely unrestricted by eight weeks.

There are multiple techniques available to a fully

trained plastic surgeon to address a woman’s breast

aesthetic. When appropriate, these procedures

can be performed at the same time as surgery to

the abdomen to cut costs and overall recovery

time. Loss of breast volume can most effectively

be addressed by implant placement, although in

many cases this is not required. Implant placement

also has the beneficial side effect of lifting the

breast to a perkier, more youthful position. When

volume alone cannot sufficiently lift the breast,

mastopexy, or a breast lift, can be performed

with different incision patterns depending on the

degree of lift required. A common concern I hear

from patients regarding mastopexy is the scarring

involved. Although it is true that some breast

lift operations require more involved incisions,

nearly all women find the reward of an improved

contour to vastly outweigh what are often barely

perceptible scars. Whichever operation is deemed

most appropriate is performed on an outpatient

basis. When performed alone, patients return to

work in a week. They can resume non-impact

exercise at four weeks and incorporate more

rigorous activity beginning at six weeks.

The aging process can certainly be viewed

as a beautiful and essential part of life. For

some patients, however, changes to the body

beyond what is typically associated with aging

can negatively affect their self-confidence. For

patients who have exhausted the benefits of any

and all conservative measures, plastic surgery is

an alternative that can help them reclaim both

their figure and their self-confidence.

Despite how simplistic it may

sound, achieving balance is an

elusive concept. Times of transition

can make you susceptible to

feeling off-balance. Transition,

good or bad, causes you to seek

solace in many different ways.

There are always things you cannot

control, but changing your attitude

and finding positive, healthful

outlets is a great place to begin.

Identifying the cause of imbalance

in your life isn’t the toughest

part but it’s finding a solution to

create peace in the places that

cause strife. In this day and age,

everyone is being pulled in so

many different directions that it’s

hard to know where to begin.

There are two components to

finding balance: internal and

external goals. Often, external

Wellness

goals, like work, family or finances,

take center stage, while the heart

and mind suffer. Sometimes, it’s the

opposite. Aligning these two aspects

is crucial to live a balanced life.

First you must acknowledge what

is out of whack in your life. Ask

yourself why you feel the way

you do and examine where that

imbalance comes from. Maybe you

are embarking on a new career,

your child is moving away, or

you are going through a divorce.

There is always a silver lining to

new beginnings no matter how

daunting they may seem.

One way you can find balance

is by finding purpose through

spiritual guidance. Turning to God

during times of joy or times of

need restores peace in your life,

even when you can’t see the light

at the end of the tunnel. God can

remind you that you are created

with purpose.

Tips:

• Learn how to say, NO

• Avoid toxic people

• Spend time by yourself

• Call an old friend to have lunch

• Write down things you love about

yourself – and remind yourself daily

• Step outside of your comfort zone

If your life is off-balance, look at it

as an opportunity. Sometimes you

have to lose your balance in order

to regain it. Losing balance isn’t a

weakness or a mistake, but instead

is an exciting opportunity to find it

in a new way. One crucial aspect is

to stop spending time and energy

on things that don’t serve you.

Devote more time to doing what

you love.Emma Reynolds

“Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. Look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. Think only of the best, work only for the best, and expect only the best. Forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. Give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. Live in the faith that the whole world is on your side so long as you are true to the best that is in you.”

–Christian D. Larson.

When you live a balanced life, you focus on living life as the best version of yourself.

So, what should you be looking for? Here are some key factors when weeding through the insurance jungle.

There are four essential types of coverage for your homeowners insurance:

1. Coverage for the physical structure of your home.

2. Coverage for personal belongings.

3. Liability protection (bodily injury or property damage)

4. Additional living expenses.

One of the fundamental steps in insuring your home’s true value properly is determining its replacement value. Replacement value is the estimated cost to rebuild your home from the ground up if it is destroyed.

To properly insure a home, the insurance carrier breaks down the replacement cost using a specific calculation based on square footage, materials, and age. If any upgrades have been made to the home since its original date of construction, those are factored in, all while making sure that your investment is protected.

You can broaden coverage over estimated replacement cost by adding guaranteed replacement coverage. This adds additional protection, should the insurance company be off on their calculations. This guarantees that the insurer will pay to rebuild your home regardless of cost.

What we see too often are homes that are underinsured on policies that don’t cover the full replacement cost of their residence or contents. It takes a licensed consultant to know what to look for and how to protect your investment.

Now that you understand what goes into calculating the value of insurance for your home, how can you cut some of the cost?

One popular strategy is by carrying a higher deductible. Homeowner’s insurance is for the large claims that potentially will be expensive to fix. But if you can afford a higher out-of-pocket expense, you could save money during the course of each year in which you don’t have a claim. Most homes have some security features such as alarm systems, sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and dead-bolt locks that can generate additional discounts on the premiums.

Additionally, if you package your other policies such as auto, umbrella, boat, and personal articles, you are maximizing the credits that the insurance company can offer you.

Don’t settle for a one-size-fits-all homeowners insurance policy. The right policy can make all of the difference in protecting your family, home and hard-earned assets. You need an experienced local insurance broker, with access to multiple preferred carriers who can tailor your coverage to fit your needs – one that works for you.
