MikeIrwin isinhisfifthseasonasheadmen’srowingcoachatSaintJoseph’sUniversity.

SincecomingtoSJU,IrwinhasseentheHawks’crewpostanumberofsolidresults,whichhavegivengreatpromiseforthisseasonandthefuture.

Irwin,whopossessesawealthofcollegiatecoachingexperienceandinvolvementwiththeU.S.NationalTeam,wasnamedtheHawks’headcoachonJuly21,2011,becomingthe10thcoachinprogramhistory.

Hiscollegecoachingcareerhasspannedmorethan20years,includ-ingsevenseasons(2002to2009)attheUniversityofPennsylvaniaasthemen'slightweightheadcoachanddirectorofboathouseoperations.Healsocoached for sevenyearsatYaleUniversity,working firstwith thefreshmanlightweightcrewandthenthefreshmanheavyweightcrew.

HecametoSaintJoseph'sfromtheEssexRowingClubinMethuen,Mass.,wherehehasbeenthedirector of operations since 2009, while also serving as the senior coach for the Men's Youth andWomen'sMastersrowingprograms.

"WearethrilledtohaveMikeheadupourmen'srowingprogram.Hehasbeenasuccessfulleaderanddirectorofprogramsontheregional,nationalandinternationallevels.HistwodecadesofcoachingexperiencehasmanycrossroadsandconnectionsthroughPhiladelphiaandtheDadVailcommunity,"saidDiJuliauponIrwin’sappointment.

IrwinwasaboatmanfortheUnitedStatesNationalTeamatthe2004and2008OlympicGames,andwasamemberoftheU.S.NationalTeamstaffforatotaloffiveWorldChampionships,datingbackto1999.

"Mikeandhisproventrackrecord,bothinternationallyandcollegiate,willbeagreatassetfortheHawkrowingprogram.IwishMikeallthebestandcongratulateSaintJoseph'sonhiringsuchanaccomplishedqualityleader,"saidMikeTeti,thecurrentUniversityofCaliforniacoachandformerU.S.NationalTeamcoach,whoisamemberoftheSJUAthleticsHallofFame.

WhileatPenn, Irwinwasnamed the2005EARCLightweightCoachof theYearasheguided theQuakers abronzemedal at the IRAChampionships. In2002,he ledYale's freshmanheavyweight crew toabronzemedal in theEastern Sprints,while in1999,his freshmanLightweightcrewatYalecapturedtwoEasternSprintsgoldmedalsandwentundefeated.

InadditiontohisdutiesatPenn,IrwinwasveryinvolvedinPhiladelphiarowing,havingservedastheheadcoachofboththeFairmountRowing Association Master's Program andthe Vesper Boat Club Senior RowingProgram.

Irwinbeganhiscoachingcareeras thenovice coach at his alma mater, TrinityCollege,aftergraduatingin1991.AnativeofBuffalo, N.Y., he earned a business essen-tialscertificate in2007fromtheUniversityofPennsylvania'sWhartonSchool.

Former Hawk rower Justin Gentile is in his fourth season as assistant coach with the SaintJoseph'smen'srowingprogram.

Gentile,atwo-yeartri-captain,wasamemberoftheHawks'bronze-medalwinningLightweight8atthe2012AberdeenDadVailRegatta.ThatmarkedhisthirdDadVailmedalashealsoearnedbronzemedalsintheLightweight8in2009andtheLightweight4in2010.

ThenativeofHavertown, Pa.,andgraduateofMonsignorBonnerHighSchool,hewasnamedSJU'sMostOutstandingPerformerhissenioryear.HeearnedmentionontheSaintJoseph'sAthleticDirector'sHonorRollandgraduatedwithhisdegreeinaccountingin2012.

GregMyhr joins the Saint Joseph’smen’s rowingprogramas an assistant coach in 2015-16,bringingawealthofcollegiatecoachingexperiencetotheHawks.

MyhrwastheheadheavyweightcoachatPennfrom2009to2015.Heearnedthe2015EARCHeavyweightCoachof the Year award after theQuakerswere recognized as themost improvedteamattheIRA NationalChampionship.

Priortothat,MyhrwastheheadcoachatGeorgeWashingtonfrom2005to2009andpilotedtheColonials’movetotheEARCin2006.Hiscrewwasnamedthesecondmostimprovedteaminthecountryatthe2007IRAs,andthethirdmostimprovedin2009.

Myhr,anativeofBethesda,Md.,alsoservedstintsasanassistantcoachattheUniversityofWisconsin,andasthefreshmancoachatbothWisconsinandGeorgetown.

A 1992 graduate ofWisconsin,Myhr was the crew team captain there and earned two silvermedals at the IRAChampionships.

GILLINBOATHOUSETheRobertM.Gillin,Jr. BoathousewasdedicatedinJune2002asthe

homeoftheSaintJoseph’sUniversitymen’sandwomen’srowingteams.The15,540squarefootstate-of-the-artboathouseincludesfourheated

boatbayswithcapacityfor42eights,14fours/quads,and14smallboats.The boathouse sits on 20,381 square feet of land at the 1,000-meter

markofthefamedSchuylkillRiverracecourse.TheboathouseservesasSJU’shomebaseforallofitshomeregattas,includingtheDadVailRegatta,MurphyCup,andvariousdualraces. The750-squarefootdeck isaperfectviewingareaforfamilies,fans,andalumni.

Thesecondflooroftheboathouseincludeslockerrooms,showers,etcaswellasalargecommonareaforergs,teammeetings,andvideoreview.

TheGillinBoatClubjoinedtheSchuylkillNavyonSeptember20,2004,byunanimousvoteofthedelegatesoftheSchuylkillNavy's10memberclubs.

InadditiontoservingasthehomeofHawkrowing,theGillinBoathousealso hosts several summer camps including the Saint Joseph’sUniversity/FairmountParkCommission'sCommunityRowingProgram.

AlthoughnottheoldestsportatSaintJoseph’sUniversity,theHawkrow-ingprogramhasestablisheditselfasarguablyoneofthemostsuccessfulinthe school’s long and storied athletics history. Making its mark onPhiladelphia’s famed Schuylkill River since 1954, SJU rowing celebrated its50thanniversaryin2003-04.

Firstemergingasaclubsportin1954,rowingreceivedofficialvarsitysta-tus in 1959 and immediate respect when Al Rosenberg was named headcoach.RosenberghadhelpedtheUnitedStatestoagoldmedalatthe1954PanAmGamesandasilveratthe1958EuropeanChampionships.HeguidedtheSJUprogramforjusttwoseasonsbeforetakingovernationalteamboats,butlaidthegroundworkforfuturesuccess.

LegendarycoachJoeTolandtookoverforRosenbergandestablishedSJUasoneoftheEast’smostsuccessfulprogramsfrom1961-73.TolandhelpedSJUtosixchampionships inBergenCupcompetition,aswellasthreePresident’sCupcrowns.HisvarsityheavyweighteightsadvancedtotheDadVailfinalin12ofhis13seasons. TheV8accomplishedthegreatestfeatoftheearlyeraofHawk rowing by winning the Dad Vail in 1970 and the team captured theBrattonTrophyastheoverallpointschampionin1971.SixofToland’sformerHawkswouldgoontorepresenttheU.S.ininternationalcompetition.

TolandrelinquishedthereinsoftheHawkprogramtooneofhisformerHawkstandouts,JimGlavin.AmemberofSJU’s1970DadVailchamps,Glavinwouldgoontocoachseveraljuniornationalteamboats.WiththefaceoftheUniversity changing, the rowing program returned to club status followingthe 1975 season, but continued to produce strong crews throughout the1970sand1980s.

Rowing returned as an official varsity sport in 1991 and the programquicklyreclaimeditsstatusamongthenation’sbest.In1999,theHawkmenpenned,arguablythegreatestfeatinschoolhistory,matchingthegreat1971HawksquadbywinningtheDadVailpointstitleforthesecondtimeinschoolhistoryandcompeting attheprestigiousHenleyRoyalRegattaontheThamesRiverinLondon,England.

TheUniversityaffirmeditscommitmenttorowingbybreakingground,along with St. Joseph’s Prep, on a state-of-the-art boathouse along theSchuylkillRiver.NamedinhonorofRobertGillin,Jr.,constructionwascom-pletedintimeforthe2002DadVailRegattaandprovidesapermanenthomefortheHawkrowingprograms.

FormerSJUstandoutDrewHilltookoverasheadcoachoftheSJUpro-gramin2003andimmediatelymadehispresencefelt.SixteenHawkboatsadvancedtotheDadVailfinals(15claimingmedals)inhisfirstfiveseasons,andSJUmatchedthe1971and1999squadsbycapturingthemen’spointstitlein2003,2005and2006.

Individually,12formerHawkshavecompetedinternationallyandsevenhavebeeninductedintotheSaintJoseph’sAthleticsHallofFame,includingGlavin, Toland, Richard and Donald Flanigan ‘60, Joe Henwood ‘68, ChrisO’Brien‘92andMikeTeti‘78.

Arguablythebest-knownoarsmaninAmerica,MikeTetiwasatopHawkrower,graduatingfromSJUwithasociologydegreein1978.

“SaintJoseph’sgavemetheopportunitytocompeteandalsotheoppor-tunityforagreateducation,”Tetisays.“IoweSJUagreatdebtforalloftheopportunitiesIreceived.”

From1977-93,Tetirowedon11nationalteams,includingthreetripstotheOlympicGames.Hewon24nationalchampionships,agoldmedalinthemen’s eight at the 1987World Championships and a bronzemedal in thesameevent at the1988Olympics. Hewasnamed the1987United StatesRowingMaleAthleteoftheYear.

Tetiachievedevengreaternotorietyasacoach,guidingtheU.S.men’sopeneightsquadtoanunprecedentedthreestraightworldchampionships.Healsocoachedthemen’sfourwithcoxswaintoworldchampionshipgold.In1996heledthelightweightmen’sfourtoanOlympicbronzemedalbeforebeing named USRowing’s HeadMen’s Sweep Coach, the highest coachinghonorinthecountry,inOctoberofthatyear.

TetibecametheU.S.Olympiccoachfollowingthe2000Games,andledthemen’seightboattogoldinAthensin2004,afeatthattheUnitedStateshad not achieved since 1964 when another coach with Hawk ties, AlRosenberg,ledtheAmericanstovictory.TetialsoguidedtheU.S.Mentothebronzemedalatthe2008OlympicsinBeijing.

Tetiiscurrentlytheheadcoachofthemen’screwteamattheUniversityofCaliforniaandwasinductedintotheNationalRowingFederation’sHallofFamein2010.AmorerecentHawktomakehismarkontheinternationalscenewas2011

graduate Ryan Pawling. As a fresh-man, Pawling coxed the AdaptiveMixedFoursquadtofifthplaceintheWorld Championships in Munich in2007,whichqualifiedthecrewfortheBeijingOlympicsin2008.

motionbyflappingitswingsthroughouteverybasketballgameandrepresentingtheSaintJoseph’smotto,“TheHawkWillNeverDie”.

SaintJoseph’sathleticteamshavebeenrecognizedwiththenickname“Hawks”since1929. Atthattime,theschool’syearbookeditorinitiatedacontestamongthestudentbodyforasymbol.Morethan100submissionswerenarrowed,with“Hawks”winningoutover“Grenadiers”byaslimmargin.Thenamewasappropriatebecauseittypified“thefightingspiritofourcrimsonandgrayathletesanditissuggestiveoftheaerialattackwhichhasmadeourfootballteamfamous.”Football,ironically,wasdiscontinuedatSJUfollowingthe1939season.

TheHawkmascothasgarnerednumerousaccoladesinits60-yearhistory,andin2013,itwasnamed“CollegeBasketball’sBestTradition”byNCAA.com.Ithasbeenselectedasthenation’stopmascotbyTheSportingNews,SportsIllustrated,SportsIllustratedforKids,Street&Smith’sBasketballYearbook andESPNCollegeBasketball magazineandwasanomineeforthe2008MascotHallofFame.

Thewilltolivegreaterexistsinallofus.At Saint Joseph’sUniversity (SJU),weuse aJesuit word, magis, roughly translated as“more,” to describe howwe are pushed tothink more, learn more and be more. Wefindmagisintheclassroom,throughservice,athletic competition, and in how we treatoneanother.Aboveall, livinggreaterunitesus as one — one university, one commoncause, one powerful force for good in theworld.

Caitlin Walley ’15, a food marketingmajor, earned a business degreewhile alsokeeping her love of theater close to herheart. When shewasn’t busymesmerizingaudiences with her leading roles, she wasbuilding a better SJU by founding the IotaRhochapterofPhiSigmaSigmasorority.Atthesametime,shesingle-handedlylaunchedher career by attending large-scaletradeshows with food industry leaders inChicago, Ill., and interningatMerck, oneofthelargestpharmaceuticalcompaniesintheworld.CaitlinchosetomakehertimematteratSJU.

Brian Lafferty ’15, a criminal justicemajor,changedhisown lifeandthe livesoffellowHawks.HemadeanimpactontheSJUcommunityas vicepresidentof the studentgovernment and a resident assistant, allwhile excelling in academics and achievingmembership in three honor societies. HispassionforhelpingothersandhisSJUprideflourishedasaHawkHosttourguideandanorientation leader.And,asa leaderofSJU’soff-campusministryprograms,hediscoveredhowtohelpotherslivegreater,whileatthesame time exciting audiences at every bas-ketballgameastheHawkmascot.
