One of the most famous mascots incollege sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk hasbeen flapping its wings for 55 years.

The Hawk, which celebrated its gold-en anniversary in 2005-06, is best known forstaying in constant motion by flapping itswings throughout every basketball gameand representing the Saint Joseph's motto,"The Hawk Will Never Die!"

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams havebeen recognized with the nickname“Hawks” since 1929. At that time, theschool’s yearbook editor initiated a contestamong the student body for a symbol. Morethan 100 submissions were narrowed, with“Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by aslim margin. The name was appropriatebecause it typified “the fighting spirit of ourcrimson and gray athletes and it is sugges-tive of the aerial attack which has made our

football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU followingthe 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-yearhistory. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News,Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s BasketballYearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for theMascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

The Saint Joseph’s men’s rowing team battled injuries and ensuinglineup changes through 2009-10, but finished up strong, with a top-notchperformance at the Abderdeen Dad Vail Regatta.

The Hawks garnered four medals in the regatta - including a gold inthe Freshman 8. SJU also took second in the Freshman Lightweight 8 andthird in both the Lightweight 8 and Lightweight 4. The Hawks finished sec-ond in the team standings to Delaware, but combined with the SaintJoseph’s women’s team to win the Bratton Trophy, which signifies theoverall points champion. For the Varsity 8, the Dad Vail was the first eventin which they raced with their early-season lineup as Alex Pugh returnedfrom an injury. The Hawks turned in a solid performance winning thePetite Final.

The Hawks started off the year with a few wins at the JesuitInvitational, and teamed with the women’s crew to capture theCannonball Trophy as the overall points winner. The Varsity 8 capturedgold, which was its first since 1999, and also grabbed a silver as the Hawksrowed two crews. The Freshman 8 and Freshman 4 also rowed to victoryin their first collegiate sprint races.

At the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill, SJU took first in the Varsity 8Petite Final, second in the Lightweight 8 and fifth in the Second V8.

The Hawks faced cold and windy conditions and a revamped lineupat the Knecht Cup. SJU made the Petite Final in both the Pairs and V8, andplaced second and fifth, respectively. The Second V4 placed fifth and theFreshman 8 was sixth in the Grand Finals.

At the SIRA Regatta, the Freshman 8 again showed its speed and con-sistency and garnered a silver medal. The V8 advanced to a strong semifi-nal and just missed the Grand Final, taking fourth place in the Petite Final. The Second Varsity 8 finished second in the Petite Final.

SJU returned home to the Bergen Cup as the Freshman 8 took homethe city title. The V8 and Second V8 each placed third with the Varsity 4earning second.

Saint Joseph’s sent one boat to the IRA Championships and theVarsity 4 placed fourth in the Third Final.

This season saw the Hawks’ Lightweights compete in the EARC forthe first time. SJU had mixed results but gained a great deal of experiencecompeting against the top-notch sprint teams. The Hawks ended the yearin the Eastern Sprints, with the LV8 and LF8 each clocking the fastesttimes of those crews that advanced to the Petite Finals and each earningfifth-place finishes.

Saint Joseph’s University

Although not the oldest sport at Saint Joseph’s University, the Hawkrowing program has established itself as arguably one of the most suc-cessful in the school’s long and storied athletics history. Making its markon Philadelphia’s famed Schuylkill River since 1954, SJU rowing celebrat-ed its 50th anniversary in 2003-04.

First emerging as a club sport in 1954, rowing received official varsi-ty status in 1959 and immediate respect when Al Rosenberg was namedhead coach. Rosenberg had helped the United States to a gold medal atthe 1954 Pan Am Games and a silver at the 1958 EuropeanChampionships. He guided the SJU program for just two seasons beforetaking over national team boats, but laid the groundwork for future suc-cess.

Legendary coach Joe Toland took over for Rosenberg and establishedSJU as one of the East’s most successful programs from 1961-73. Tolandhelped SJU to six championships in Bergen Cup competition, as well as threePresident’s Cup crowns. His varsity heavyweight eights advanced to theDad Vail final in 12 of his 13 seasons. The V8 accomplished the greatest featof the early era of Hawk rowing by winning the Dad Vail in 1970 and theteam captured the Bratton Trophy as the overall points champion in 1971.Six of Toland’s former Hawks would go on to represent the U.S. in interna-tional competition.

Toland relinquished the reins of the Hawk program to one of his for-mer Hawk standouts, Jim Glavin. A member of SJU’s 1970 Dad Vailchamps, Glavin would go on to coach several junior national team boats. With the face of the University changing, the rowing program returned toclub status following the 1975 season, but continued to produce strongcrews throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Rowing returned as an official varsity sport in 1991 and the programquickly reclaimed its status among the nation’s best. In 1999, the Hawkmen penned, arguably the greatest feat in school history, matching thegreat 1971 Hawk squad by winning the Dad Vail points title for the secondtime in school history and competing at the prestigious Henley RoyalRegatta on the Thames River in London, England.

The University affirmed its commitment to rowing by breakingground, along with St. Joseph’s Prep, on a state-of-the-art boathousealong the Schuylkill River. Named in honor of Robert Gillin, Jr., construc-tion was completed in time for the 2002 Dad Vail Regatta and provides apermanent home for the Hawk rowing programs.

Former SJU standout Drew Hill took over as head coach of the SJUprogram in 2003 and immediately made his presence felt. Sixteen Hawkboats advanced to the Dad Vail finals (15 claiming medals) in his first fiveseasons, and SJU matched the 1971 and 1999 squads by capturing themen’s points title in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

Individually, 12 former Hawks have competed internationally andseven have been inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame, including Glavin, Toland, Richard and Donald Flanigan ‘60, Joe Henwood‘68, Chris O’Brien ‘92 and Mike Teti ‘78.

Arguably the best-known oarsman in America, Mike Teti was a topHawk rower, graduating from SJU with a sociology degree in 1978.

“Saint Joseph’s gave me the opportunity to compete and also theopportunity for a great education,” Teti says. “I owe SJU a great debt forall of the opportunities I received.”

From 1977-93, Teti rowed on 11 national teams, including three tripsto the Olympic Games. He won 24 national championships, a gold medalin the men’s eight at the 1987 World Championships and a bronze medalin the same event at the 1988 Olympics. He was named the 1987 UnitedStates Rowing Male Athlete of the Year.

Teti achieved even greater notoriety as a coach, guiding the U.S.men’s open eight squad to an unprecedented three straight world cham-pionships. He also coached the men’s four with coxswain to world cham-pionship gold. In 1996 he led the lightweight men’s four to an Olympicbronze medal before being named USRowing’s Head Men’s Sweep Coach, the highest coaching honor in the country, in October of that year.

Teti became the U.S. Olympic coach following the 2000 Games, andled the men’s eight boat to gold in Athens in 2004, a feat that the UnitedStates had not achieved since 1964 when another coach with Hawk ties,Al Rosenberg, led the Americans to victory. Teti also guided the U.S. Mento the bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Teti is currently the head coach of the men’s crew team at theUniversity of California and was inducted into the National RowingFederation’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

A more recent Hawk to make his mark on the international scene is sen-ior Ryan Pawling. As a freshman, Pawling coxed the Adaptive Mixed Foursquad to fifth place in the World Championships in Munich in 2007, whichqualified the crew for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Saint Joseph’s christened a shell in honor of the 1970 Dad Vail Champion Varsity8, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2010.

Mike Teti was the head coach for the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, guiding the U.S. tothe bronze medal in Beijing.

Saint Joseph’s Rowing established the Jesuit Invitational in 1999 and it has become a major race in the collegiate rowing season, featuring solely Jesuitcolleges. The Jesuit Invitational is held every year in March on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J.

The Casey Ferrone Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Men’s Varsity 8 champion, while the Robert Gillin, Jr., Memorial Trophy is awarded to theWomen’s Varsity 8 winner.

The Cannonball Trophy is given to the overall team champion. It is named in honor of Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, whohad his leg shattered by a cannonball while defending Spain from an attack by France. The Cannonball Trophy serves as a reminder that all good thingsstart with pain. The glory of winning is only possible by withstanding the mental and physical pain of the 2000m race course. The trophy is awarded tothe school with the highest combined points in the day’s races. It is a traveling trophy which the winner returns every year. The winning team receivesa small cannonball that is theirs to keep as a reminder of their championship performance.
