As it was in 2010, change will be a prominent theme for theHawks men’s soccer team as the program enters its second sea-son under Don D’Ambra. In his first year as coach, the teamshowed improvement and played many close matches. TheHawks look to continue to make those strides in 2011 and thework has already begun.

“We showed signs of improvement this past spring" saidD'Ambra. "Our young players got a lot of minutes on the fieldresulting in a boost of their confidence.”

D'Ambra knows experience cannot be coached, which iswhy it was important for the team to gain as much as theycould during spring practice.

The Hawks’ 2011 roster will feature four senior and fourjunior returning players, with a majority of the team consistingof underclassmen. The senior leadership will blend with a solidcore of returning players and a talented group of nine fresh-men. Leadership will not be hard to find this season withreturning captain Tom Smart and junior Jake McPaul anchoringthe defense.

“Tom is an extremely hard worker who will bring a goodwork rate and urgency to the game. Jake is a very good vocalleader who organizes the team defensively,” said D'Ambra.

Undoubtedly, rising to the top of the competitive Atlantic10 Conference will be a challenging process; but that will con-tinue to be the goal of the program. The coaches will rely on thesteady play of the defense and a revamped offensive attack.

Losing the top goal scorer from each of the past four sea-sons in Colin Baker will hurt, but the loss will create opportuni-ty for the younger players.

“Our offense is the area where we must see improvementsin order to reach our potential this season” said D’Ambra. “Wehave some solid young forwards in Alex Critzos, Michael Glazerand Ryan McFadden who have a lot of upside once they adjustto this level."

The Hawks will rely heavily on McPaul and Smart along withjunior Tim Brennan to bolster the defense.

“Our defenders are our most experienced players and wehave added some depth to this area with our incoming fresh-men,” D’Ambra said. Sophomores Matt Macey and BrianReynolds add quality experience and look to hold importantroles in front of the goalkeeper.

Behind the defense, returning in goal this season will besophomore Michael Moulton and junior Drew D’Ottavi.

“Our goalkeepers are steady and need to play consistent-ly,” said D’Ambra, adding that both of them played a significantamount in their freshman campaigns. Moulton led the Atlantic10 last season in saves per game and is eyeing an improvementthis season.

“Our focus is on results, although we were competitive lastseason, we fell short too many times," explained D'Ambra. "Wehave added some talented players with a lot of heart, whichwill enhance our team. We hope to increase our offensive pro-ductivity, which will make a big difference in the end results." IfD’Ambra and his charges can find the back of the net on a con-sistent basis, the Hawks will surely find the win column as well.”

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 56 years.

The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flap-

ping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s

yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed,

with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fight-

ing spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team

famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s

top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN

College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

FINNESEY FIELD

Finnesey Field has been home to 10different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’sUniversity as it enters its 83rd year.Opened in 1929 as home to the SJUfootball squad, the field has undergonenumerous changes over the years andhas been home to over a thousand SJUvarsity games, matches and track meets.

The most recent upgrade happenedin the summer of 2008 as the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced withnew, state-of-the-art TigerTurf.Additionally, the track received a newcoat of rubber material in 2009 to bettersuit the athletes who use it for all sea-sons.

Home to the men’s and women’ssoccer teams, men’s and women’slacrosse teams, the field has seen othermodifications done to it since its incep-tion in 1929. The prospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadium for football wasdashed when the sport was discontin-ued following the 1939 season.

Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey homeuntil 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand as well as the hillsideseating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (nowPost) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its cur-rent location.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a trulymulti-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered theuse of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next toMandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadi-um.

Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer started in 1958 and played everyseason but one (1960) at Finnesey. The squad has compiled an over-all 164-175-31 mark in 52 seasons at Hawk Hill, the most victories ofany program on Finnesey Field. SJU opened its playing grounds witha 6-0 victory over Rutgers-South Jersey in October 24, 1958.

The location has also been home to women’s soccer since 1996and the field hockey team wrapped up its last season on Finnesey in2007.

Overall, the site has seen 1,151 games entering the 2011-12 aca-demic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 524-579-48in 82 years.

2010 YEAR IN REVIEW

The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer team finished its 2010 season with a

record of 2-15-0 overall and 1-8-0 in the Atlantic 10 under first-year head

coach Don D’Ambra. Although it was a rebuilding year for the program with

nearly 50 percent of the squad comprised of freshmen (15), the team

showed marked improvement from 2009.

The Hawks fired more shots with 144 to its total of 118 from the previ-

ous year and held its opponents to 38 goals, improving from 51 allowed in

2009.

The squad opened its season with two home games, a loss to Penn in

its season opener and then fell 3-2 in a hard fought match to Towson. The

Tigers scored two goals in the first half and the Hawks came back to knot the

game at the 52:18 mark. The Hawks’ defense only allowed the Tigers fours

shots in the second half but Towson scored in the 78th minute to take the

win.

The Hawks then hit the road for four games including two in the

Pittsburgh Nike tournament. They dropped a 1-0 match to Duquense and

suffered losses to Pittsburgh, Cornell, and Villanova before returning home

for two games.

Snapping a 24-game losing streak the Hawks defeated Iona, 1-0, for

their first win of the season. Freshman Patrick McGlynn dribbled a ball down

the center of the field in the second half and blasted it into the lower right

corner of the net for his first career goal and the game-winner. In goal fresh-

man Michael Moulton made nine saves including two big saves in the last 10

minutes of the game to record his first career shutout.

Moulton was named Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Player of the Week for

his performance against Iona as well as his six saves against Villanova after

taking over goalkeeping duties in the second half.

The Hawks then dropped a 1-0 loss to La Salle at home and their first

three conference matches on the road to Temple, Xavier, and Dayton.

SJU returned home to earn its second win of the season, 2-0, over Rhode

Island. Moulton made nine saves in net once again to post his second

shutout. After a scoreless first half, senior Colin Baker took a cross from the

right side of the field and volleyed the ball into the upper left corner of the

net to put the Hawks up 1-0. He sealed the win in the 78th minute, as he

tapped in a rebound off the Rams goalkeeper.

Baker was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for his performance

against Rhode Island while Moulton was tabbed Soccer Six Player of the

Week for his nine saves against URI and his 10 saves in the Hawks’ 1-0 loss to

Massachusetts two days later. The Minutemen scored the lone goal of the

game in the 80th minute on a backwards pass that was fired high into the

back of the net as it brushed the tips of Moulton’s fingers.

Moulton then went on to make 12 saves between the pipes as the

Hawks fell to Charlotte, which was undefeated (6-0) in the Atlantic 10 and fin-

ished the season 8-1.

The Hawks fell to the 2009 A-10 champion Saint Louis in their final road

game and closed out its season at home, falling to Richmond and George

Washington.

The Hawks graduated seven seniors including Colin Baker, Giacomo

DiLisi, Greg Dusing, Alex Garst, Rocco Pozzessere, Kevin Rhoades, and D.J.

Salmon.

Junior defender Tom Smart was named to the 2010 Philadelphia Soccer

Six All-Star team as the Hawks landed a player on the All-Star team for the

19th straight season.
