Saint John’s Catholic School New Haven, Indiana www.sjnewhaven.org Dear Saint John’s, Friday, March 22, 2019 Greetings in Christ! I thank our Lord for His continued energy and joy in our building. Truly excellent instruction continues to be a foundation for us. I was blessed to follow 4 th grade for some of their week. In Spanish, I was particularly impressed to see our children present about weather entirely in Spanish, with a very clear rubric for grading, focused especially on pronunciation and vocabulary. Many of our students used truly perfect pronunciation. They went on to learn new vocabulary, and I commend thank our teacher who led them to stand and act out the meaning of the words as the children said them in Spanish. For example, when they learned jugar beisbol, students had to swing a pretend bat like they were playing baseball that continued on with at least 15-20 words and some great creativity. In music, 4 th grade continued to learn to read music and play the recorder. Although it had been at least 20-25 years since I had played a recorder, I learned with them, and it was so much fun! In just one class period, students correctly learned the notes “B,” “A,” and “G,” and by the end, could play “Hot Cross Buns” and “Merrily we Roll Along.” They did a great job – many displayed some great skill on solo performances! 8 th graders, in literature, critically analyzed several chapters of The Bronze Bow. A truly gripping story, their analysis of higher level comprehensions questions, centered on evaluating text and making inferences, was indeed challenging and exciting to see. I was highly impressed with one of our kindergarten classes this week. Learning time-ordering words (i.e. first, next, last, etc.), students utilized those to write sentences about how plants grow. In guided practice and then individual writing, students truly understood this process and displayed phenomenal hand-writing abilities, with great punctuation and spacing! To make it even more engaging, students actually went on to plan seeds in cups they will grow in the classroom. Later the in the afternoon, they took the sentences they’d written, and with some highly creative energy, cut them out and glued them to create their own paper flowers. What a well organized and compelling lesson! Bridging writing and physical, kinesthetic practice, students truly did learn how flowers grow. Great job kindergarten! Truly excellent instruction inspires me. It makes me excited about our days here and about our future. To me, it is a clear sign of God’s love among us as well. The Lord is good! Our teachers also deserve that recognition and praise they indeed are great! Thank you faculty, and thank you to our community for all that you do for our children each day. Dear Saint John’s, Friday, March 22, 2019

Greetings in Christ! I thank our Lord for His continued energy and joy in our building. Truly excellent

instruction continues to be a foundation for us. I was blessed to follow 4th grade for some of their week. In

Spanish, I was particularly impressed to see our children present about weather entirely in Spanish, with a very
