A Gospel Reflection

The Hard Truth

There is no Christianity without a cross. And if we want to follow, we have to take up the

cross. That’s the hard truth.

Taking up the cross doesn’t mean coping well with sickness or bad luck. We take up the cross

when we choose sacrifice we could avoid in order to help others.

Here’s a brief story.

Mark was a volunteer when our school helped house homeless families for a week. We

needed volunteers to come Sunday morning to help serve breakfast. Mark came early, even

though Saturday night had been a big night for him with mates. Mark was the only student to

show up. He was tired. But he chose to sacrifice. And homeless families had a better day

because of it.

Living as a Christian means choosing little sacrifices like Mark’s on a daily basis. Taking up the

cross means giving up your life each day in little ways. You take up your cross when you help

someone without having to be asked. You take up your cross when you reach out to the

unpopular kid in the yard. You take up your cross when you sacrifice time with friends for time

at the soup kitchen or homeless shelter.

Like Peter, each day we must decide who we think Jesus is. We show that he is our Messiah

(the one who came to save us) when we choose to sacrifice for others. Oddly enough, it is

through those little sacrifices that we really save our own lives – and add to the lives of others.

When have you chosen a sacrifice – taken up a cross – that has shown others who Jesus is to

you? Copyright © 2014 GPBS, All rights reserved

Saint of the Week

St Matthew was originally a tax collector for the Roman Government at Capernaum, before Jesus called him to become an apostle. Jesus’ contemporaries were surprised to see him associating with someone like Matthew, but Jesus explained that he had come “not to call the just, but the sinners”. In the Gospels of Mark and Luke, Matthew is called Levi, and so it is thought that he may have had both names. The first Gospel was believed to have been written by Matthew. His account of Christ’s life was written for his fellow Jews; to convince them that their anticipated Messiah had

indeed come in the person of Jesus.

Parish Office

CHANGES IN THE PARISH OFFICE

The Archdiocese conducted an audit of the functions and operation of the Parish Office in May

this year and made a number of recommendations which have had a significant impact on the

future of the office. Most importantly, it severely cut the hours of employment for our office staff

and placed a critical priority on our engagement of a financial officer. As in most workplaces in

Canberra, we are being required to manage with fewer resources. Consequently, you will have

seen advertisements recently to fill new positions and these relate directly to the audit's

recommendations. Theivani Evers' role as Parish Assistant/Office Manager has been drafted to

focus on the efficient and timely administration of Parish business. Magda Baraniecki continues

as our Secretary but with her financial functions handed to the new financial officer. Naomi

Johnson will continue to offer administrative support and run the rosters. The Planned Giving

officer position which Gayle Jeffries currently occupies will be made redundant and its functions

handed to the new financial officer. Gayle has served the Parish office for over nine years in this

capacity, and going forward will continue in the office as the Sacramental Coordinator. The loss

of Pastoral Associates roles will see an increase to the workload of our Priests. I regret the

upheaval which so much change has brought to the Parish office but I trust in your patience and

understanding as we move forward. Fr Mark

REPORT FROM THE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL FOR AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER

The last two meetings of the PPC have been concerned with both principles

and practicalities. The principles related to the best ways of growing and

enriching the Parish and the development of a submission to the Plenary

Council in answer to its question: what is the future of the Australian church? Comments,

opinions and discussion to Steve Seesink at: [email protected]. The practical side

of discussion has covered the broad range of suggestions the Council has received through

the suggestion box (please keep them coming) and how we can act to fulfil these requests.

For example, there will be a second, lower holy water font in the foyer and the Apostles’ Creed

will now be flashed up on the screens during Mass. A full report is on the parish website:

www.holyspirtigungahlin.org.au. The council is renovating the church street sign to make it

more visible and is considering an electronic sign in the longer term. The Welcome to Mass

ministry will be revamped to emphasise warmth and welcome to all. Finally, the PPC reiterates

its determination to continue and enhance the wonderful support the Parish and its schools

extend to the St Vincent de Paul, especially in the run-up to Christmas.

Parish Ordination Celebration

Our parish loves a party! I want to pass on a special thank you to our St Vincent de Paul group for hosting the parish celebration on Sunday 9 September. The group catered lovely foods, set up, greeted parishioners with their smiling faces, created a lovely buzz and cleaned up afterwards. I appreciate the hard work each of you put in and thank you for your generosity.

Thank you again to Naomi and Magda for the organising the cake, purchasing the perfect gifts, taking photos and welcoming everyone warmly. Thanks to Beth Forshaw for the lovely handcrafted cards.

We all get to enjoy a good time because of hard-workers behind the scenes!

Fr Mark

Thank You! Ordination Celebration

A big Thank you to Naomi Johnson and Magda Baraniecki. In

addition to managing a very busy parish office last week, Naomi

and Magda also did all the catering and organising for Fr Namora’s

Ordination celebration on Friday 7 September. I would also like to

thank Trish Sargeant for helping them on the night.

The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows commemorates the seven great sorrows which Mary lived in relation to Her Son, as they are recorded in the Gospels or through Tradition. Today we are invited to reflect on Mary's deep suffering: 1. At the prophecy of Simeon: "You yourself shall be pierced with a sword - so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare." (Luke 2:35).

2. At the flight into Egypt; "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt." (Mt 2:13). 3. Having lost the Holy Child at Jerusalem; "You see that your father and I have been searching for you in sorrow." (Luke 2:48). 4. Meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary; 5. Standing at the foot of the Cross; "Near the cross of Jesus there stood His mother." (John 19:25). 6. Jesus being taken from the Cross; 7. At the burial of Christ.

Who Do You Say Jesus Is?

We’re tempted to applaud when Peter gives the right answer. The

other disciples fumble around, giving Jesus the daily buzz about

what people are saying about him. But when Jesus asks them what

they personally think, only Peter has an answer. It’s enough to

make them want to cheer.

Especially because Peter is so often the gospel bungler, the guy

who speaks first, thinks afterwards. He’s the guy, not unlike

ourselves, who defends Jesus with a sword one minute, denies him

with a word the next. And unfortunately, the same holds true in

this instance as well. Even as we’re tempted to clap, Peter is

already shooting himself in the foot. He knew the right answer, but

he can’t follow through on it. He knows Jesus is the Christ, but he

still doesn’t want him to get hurt.

And, the truth is, Peter doesn’t want to get hurt either. If he

accepts the teachings about the Son of Man being murdered, then

he’s got to wonder when they’ll be coming after him. So Jesus calls

him the Devil, which must have cut deep. And then advises that

they too prepare to lose their lives if they’re going to be his

followers. Peter got the answer right, the first time. He, like the rest

of us, just needs to work on the follow-through.
