In our families we learn about caring. We learn to care for our own needs and the needs of others, and we learn to take responsibility for the needs of our household. Sometimes caring for these needs means that we are unable to do other things that we would enjoy more. At times, we can be tempted not to take responsibility for what we are given to care for. Talk about the different ways your family cares for one another and the needs of your household. Re-member times when you’ve been tempted to put your own needs ahead of others. Talk about the personal

and familial consequences of making that choice. Point out how God cares for us every day and will never forget us. Read aloud this Sunday’s Gospel, Matthew 6:24–34. Talk about how God looks after the birds in the sky and the flowers in the field. Point out how Jesus reminds his disciples that they are worth much more than these things. Take turns sharing times in which you have experienced God’s care for yourself and your family. Conclude this time together by offering one another a sign of peace.

FAMILY CONNECTION: EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

On Feb. 23, the Catholic Church remem-bers the life and martyrdom of St. Polycarp, a disciple of St. John the apostle. Polycarp is cel-ebrated on the same date by Eastern Orthodox Christians, who also honor him as a Saint.

Growing up, Polycarp received the teachings and recollections of individuals who had seen and known Jesus during his earth-ly life. This important connection – between Jesus’ first disciples and apostles and their respective students – served to protect the Catholic Church against the influence of here-

sy during its earliest days, particularly against early attempts to deny Jesus’ bodily incarna-tion and full humanity. Polycarp is known to later generations primarily through the account of his martyr-dom, rather than by a formal biography. How-ever, it can be determined from that account that he was born around the year 69 AD. From the testimony he gave to his persecutors – stating he had served Christ for 86 years – it is clear that he was one of the first saints to be raised as a Christian.

The family of Bob Bindseil wish to express our grati-tude and appreciation to the entire St. Ferdinand’s Family. The prayers, visits, calls, and acts of love are what helps during the difficult days. A special thank you to the choir for sharing your beautiful voices at the service and to the Altar Society for the lovely meal at the fellowship. Thank you, Father Wade, for your “on demand” house calls and the special prayers, services, and kind words of hope and peace. To the Acts Brothers: If we lived another lifetime, we still would not have enough time to express our appreciation to all of you for everything that you have all done throughout the years. You are a very special group of men and in each and every act of service that any of you did, it was filled with love and our beloved Father/Husband knew and felt this. He loved and still loves you all as his Brothers in Christ. And a very special thank you to the Knights of Colum-bus for your act of kindness and love.

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts,

“WITH THE LORD THERE IS MERCY AND FULLNESS OF REDEMPTION.”- PSALM 130

What emotions come to mind when you think of Lent? What do you feel when you hear of Jesus’ fasting and temptation in the desert? What about His Passion and Death? Certainly we can all agree to having felt the melancholy gloom of these 40 days before Easter. The Church rightly wants us to remember the weight of the cross and the great depth of Christ’s suf-fering. But if Lent is really only about suffering, isn’t the process more than a little bit excessive? Surely there has to be more to it! As Catholics, we’re called to follow in Je-sus’ footsteps in order to better unite our life to His. We’re called to fill the world with His mes-sage of hope, mercy, and love. This missionary call does not change during Lent. In order to fully experience the grace that God offers us during this time, we must remember that Lent

is not a time of shame and suffering for the sake of pleasing an angry God. Jesus fasted in the desert in order to strengthen Himself for His ministry and sacrifice. He sought a deeper in-timacy with His loving Father. When we die to ourselves, Lent strengthens us to rise up in the glory of the risen Christ, and enables us to grow in love with our Father, who provides for our every need.

In the next few pages, you’ll find some opportunities to unite your Lenten journey with that of your fellow parishioners. Perhaps you’ll find some fresh perspective on the process and purpose of Lent. It is my prayer that our parish family grows closer to God in this glorious time.

Walking with you in the peace of Christ,

Fr. Wade

LENTEN RESOURCESQ&A on the Basics of Lent from the United States Conference of Catholic BishopsQ. Ash Wednesday? Why do we put ashes on our fore head?

A. Having ashes on your forehead isn’t just some weird Catholic thing: it’s a tradition that finds its roots in the Old Testament. “I turned to the Lord God...in prayer and petition, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes” (Dan-iel 9:3). When the ashes are placed on our foreheads it is a reminder of several things. First, it is a call to repentance: a physical sign that we are sinners in need of forgiveness, which is how the prophets used it in the Old Testament. Second, it is to remind us that God cre-ated us from the earth and when we die, we will return to it. But here’s the best part: As Pope Benedict XVI has said, “Man is dust and to dust he shall return, but dust is precious in God’s eyes because God created man, destining him to immortality.” God so loves us that, even when our bodies return to the dust, our souls are meant to live forever with him. The ashes symbolize all of this.

Q. Why do we say that there are forty days of Lent? When you count all the days from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, there are 46.

A. It might be more accurate to say that there is the “forty day fast within Lent.” Historically, Lent has varied from a week to three weeks to the present con-figuration of 46 days. The forty day fast, however, has been more stable. The Sundays of Lent are certainly part of the Time of Lent, but they are not prescribed days of fast and abstinence.

Q. So does that mean that we should break our fast on Sundays?

A. Apart from the prescribed days of fast and absti-nence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and the days of abstinence every Friday of Lent, Catholics have traditionally chosen additional penitential prac-tices for the whole Time of Lent. These practices are disciplinary in nature and often more effective if they are continuous, i.e., kept on Sundays as well. That being said, such practices are not regulated by the Church, but by individual conscience.

Q. What is classified as “meat” in the context of Lent?

A. Abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep or pigs --- all of which live on land. Birds are also considered

meat. Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consomme, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as season-ings or condiments made from animal fat are tech-nically not forbidden. Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish, and shell-fish are permitted.

Q. So, is it ok if I splurge on expensive seafood or gorge on the seafood buffet in the name of fasting?

A. While fish, lobster and other shellfish are not con-sidered meat and can be consumed on days of absti-nence, indulging in the lavish buffet at your favorite seafood place sort of misses the point. Abstaining from meat and other indulgences during Lent is a penitential practice. On the Fridays of Lent, we re-member the sacrifice of Christ on Good Friday and unite ourselves with that sacrifice through abstinence and prayer.

Q. I understand that Catholics ages 14 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, but what exactly are the rules for these fasts?

A. Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are al-lowed at any time, but no solid food should be con-sumed between meals.

Q. Are there exemptions other than for age from the re-quirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday?

A. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or men-tally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

“Our sins are nothing but a grain of sand along the great mountain

of the mercy of God.”

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL LENT

In a particular way during Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that “remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our

neighbors in body and spirit.” We’ll focus on the corporal works of mercy in next week’s bulletin.

The Seven Spiritual Works of MercyCounseling the Doubtful Everyone has moments of doubt in their faith journey. Nevertheless, we should always remember that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and turn to him along our way.

Instructing the Ignorant Learn about our faith and be open to talking with others about our beliefs. There is always something more to discover about our faith.

Admonishing the Sinner Do not judge, but be supportive in helping others find their way and correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to walk more closely with Christ.

Comforting the Sorrowful Be open to listening and comforting those who are dealing with grief. Even if we aren’t sure of the right words

to say, our presence can make a big difference.

Forgiving InjuriesForgiving others is difficult at times because we do

not have God’s limitless mercy and compassion. But Jesus teaches us that we should forgive as God forgives, relying on him to help us show others the mercy of God.

Bearing Wrongs PatientlyDo not be bitter about wrongs done against you.

Place your hope in God so that you can endure the troubles of this world and face them with a compassionate spirit.

Praying for the Living and the DeadPrayer is one of the most powerful ways we can

support others. Joining together in prayer for the living and the dead entrusts us all into God’s care.

“To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith,

no explanation is possible.”

-SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS

Take a moment and consider this ques-tion, “What is your goal in life?” Perhaps we need to make a list. Our true goal or priority may be identified by where we commit time, money and resources. Today, Jesus challenges us to orient ev-erything we do toward enhancing our relationship with God. Jesus tells us that we cannot serve God and material goods. Just as a servant cannot serve their master and their master’s enemy. God does not ask us to be irresponsible but to use our tal-ents and time wisely in order to glorify God.

Good Shepherd is happy to continue its tradition of a prayer chalice for vocations. It is given to the re-ceiving family after Mass in a private ceremony with Fr. Wade. If your family feels called to pray with the Chalice, please contact Warren Davis before or after Mass or by contacting him directly at 713-569-9491.

Vocations Chalice

Know that the LORD is God, he made us, we belong to him,we are his people, the flock he shepherds.

-PSALM 100:3

Good Shepherd will again join other area church-es in the annual Disaster Relief Clothes Drive which provides emergency clothing for victims of natural disasters. Just two years ago our local communities benefitted from this program in the aftermath of the Memorial Day floods. The drive begins Ash Wednes-day, March 1st, and continues throughout lent. Bring your bagged or boxed clothing to the parish hall where they will be picked up after Easter.
