XXIX Sunday in Ordinary Time XXIX Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario If we want to know what Jesus’ parable is about in today’s Gospel, it seems that we don’t need to work too hard because Saint Luke tell us right at the beginning: “Jesus told his disciples a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart.” This parable has often been used to bring comfort to us about our prayer life. But could there be a more challenging message for those who take stewardship seriously? Widows were the poorest and most vulnerable of people in Jesus’ time. Oppressive legal and economic struc-tures were the norm. Jesus embraced with great compassion the poor and the marginalized. Could it be that we are also encouraged to pray persistently for the poor, the weak and the vulnerable as we hear their cry for justice? And that we must not lose heart that we can effect change in their lives?

Si queremos saber de que trata la parabola de Jesus en el Evangelio de hoy, parece que no tenemos que esforzarnos demasiado en buscar, ya que San Lucas nos dice justamente en el inicio: “Jesus dijo a sus discıpulos una parabola acerca de su necesidad de orar siempre y no desalentarse.” Esta parabola a menudo ha sido usada para confortarnos en nuestra vida de oracion. ¿Pero podrıa haber un mensaje mas desa iante para aquellos que toman seriamente la corresponsabilidad? OUR FAITH Q:Isitnecessaryforthefaithfultoreceivethe inalbless-ingtoful illtheSundayMassobligation? A: The “Sunday obligation” is found in the CodeofCanonLaw, where it states, “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. Moreover, they are to abstain from those works and affairs which hinder the worship of God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body” (canon 1247). This obligation is part of the responsibility of every Christian “to lead a holy life and to promote the growth of the Church and its continual sanc-ti ication, according to their own station” (canon 210). The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that “the Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and con irmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin” (2181). Two things should be noted as regards the Sunday obligation. First, Catholics are required to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days, but are not required to receive Holy Communion each time they attend Mass. Second, the law makes no distinction about “how much” of the Mass we must attend. Because it makes no distinction, in my opinion, we must – unless excused – partici-pate in the entirety of the Mass, from beginning to end, in order to ful ill the Sunday obligation, in addition to abstaining from those things which hinder the worship of God and suitable relax-ation. Of course, there are times when circumstances beyond our control may make us arrive late to the Holy Mass, but these situ-ations should not be common occurrences. It is dif icult to imag-ine too many situations (excepting sudden emergencies) in which departing from the Holy Mass only a minute or two before the conclusion would be necessary. The Mass begins with the Introductory Rites, which “precede the Liturgy of the Word, namely, the Entrance, the Greeting, the Pen-itential Act, the Kyrie, the Gloriainexcelsis(Glory to God in the highest), and Collect, [and] have the character of a beginning, an introduction, and a preparation” (GIRM, 46). The Holy Mass be-gins, then, with the entrance of the priest (and the ministers), accompanied, if there is one, by a chant or hymn. The Mass inishes with the Concluding Rites, which may include announcements and always includes the Priest’s Greeting and Blessing, the Dismissal, and, inally, “the kissing of the altar by the Priest and the Deacon, followed by a profound bow to the altar by the Priest, the Deacon, and the other ministers,” unless the tabernacle is located in the sanctuary, toward which all genu-lect instead (GIRM, 90d). Given what the Lord Jesus has done for us, the ful illment of the Sunday obligation ought to be done out of a sense of devotion and love. Indeed, because “the Christian faithful are to hold the Most Holy Eucharist in highest honor, taking an active part in the celebration of the most august sacri ice, receiving this sacrament most devoutly and frequently, and worshipping it with highest adoration,” the question of “how much” of the Mass one must attend ought not enter into the thoughts of a Catholic. P:¿Es necesario que los ieles reciban la bendicion inal para cum-plir con la obligacion de la Misa Dominical? R:La "obligacion dominical" se encuentra en el Codigo de Derecho Canonico, donde dice: "Los domingos y otros dıas santos de obliga-cion, los ieles estan obligados a participar en la Misa. Ademas, deben abstenerse de esas obras y asuntos que obstaculizan la ado-racion a Dios, la alegrıa propia del dıa del Senor o la relajacion ade-cuada de la mente y el cuerpo” (canon 1247). Esta obligacion es parte de la responsabilidad de cada cristiano "de llevar una vida santa y promover el crecimiento de la Iglesia y su santi icacion continua, de acuerdo con su propia estacion" (canon 210). El Catecismo de la Iglesia Catolica explica que “la Eucaristıa domi-nical es el fundamento y la con irmacion de toda practica cristiana. Por esta razon, los ieles estan obligados a participar en la Eucaris-tıa en dıas de obligacion, a menos que sean excusados por una ra-zon grave (por ejemplo, enfermedad, cuidado de bebes) o dispen-sados por su propio pastor. Debido a que no hace distincion, en mi opinion, debemos, a menos que esten justi icados, participar en la totalidad de la Misa, de principio a in, para cumplir con la obligacion dominical, ademas de abstenernos de aquellas cosas que obstaculizan la adoracion a Dios. y relajacion adecuada. FASTING BEFORE MASS

FastbeforeMass. It is Church law that one fasts for at least (1) hour before receiving Holy Communion. Water and medicine can be consumed, of course. The purpose is to help us prepare to re-ceive Jesus in the Eucharist. NoFoodandDrinkinChurch. The exceptions would be a drink for small children, water for the priest or choir (if discreet) and water for those who are ill. Bringing a snack into church is not appropriate, because we want to set the church apart as a place of prayer and re lection.
