THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. FRANCISCO RISO, PAROCHIAL VICAR….

During his ministry, Jesus told us to love one another as we love ourselves, “Love your neigh-bor as yourself; so the measure of our love was ourselves. As I love myself that is the measure, I love others. But at the Last Supper he told his disciples “love one another as I have loved you” so the measure is not anymore as I love myself it is, as Jesus loved us, giving his life for us on the Cross. There is no greater love than the one who gives his life for his friends. St. Paul reminds us that “love is patient, love is kind, it is not jealous, is not pompous, is not in-flated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own in-terests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice in wrong doing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never fails…. So faith, hope love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1Cor 13) Love has to be shown in actions more than in words and St. John in his first letter tells us “If anyone says, I love god, but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. This is the commandment we have from him: Whoever loves God must also love his brother” (1Jn 4:20-21)

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

The one asking Jesus which commandment was the first is a scribe, one learned in the Law. He asks a question regularly discussed in Jesus’ time so Jesus answers him directly. The question of what or whom is first comes from a desire to find the essential element of the area being discussed. It implies that there are too many, in this case commandments, to keep present in one’s mind. So the desire is to ensure focus on the essential or base of the Law. Summarizing Jesus’ eloquent response, loving God with our whole being provides the foundation for a life lived seeking to answer the call of our creator. Loving God can be often honored primarily in thought, acknowledging the truth of the call but without concrete actions which embody it. Jesus adds a “second” commandment to explain the fundamental way in which we are to love God … by loving our neighbor. Not in an abstract way but in the same way and with the same intensity that we “love” ourselves. Hmmm, that gets pretty personal. How do we love ourselves? The temptation is to support our desire to provide comfort and fulfilment as we see it in our worldly life. But perhaps Jesus’ invitation to love others as we love ourselves is fundamentally a question which addresses intensity, not just acknowledgment. Worldly allures tempt us to provide for ourselves first and then, if any love is left over, we share with others. We can easily fool ourselves, sharing only “leftover” love. We need to honor the call to see others in the same way we see ourselves. Even though expressed as a commandment in Jewish Law, it’s not intended to be onerous or out of reach. Love, the personification of God as the Gospel of John tells us, is the glue that allows us to see others (and ourselves) as God sees us. It isn’t a hurdle to be overcome but rather the “food” which provide life … a life lived in imitation of Jesus. Yet, with all the aspects of daily life that draw us away from this essential truth, we still must maintain an awareness that we, first and foremost, are made to love. Too often forgotten is the wonderful reminder that “love isn’t love until it is given away.” That giving doesn’t diminish our storehouse of love, rather it manifests within us a fullness of potential to be for others a source of goodness. In the words of a popular idiom it’s sort of a “less is more” situation. As with most things, practice is needed to become more able to be loving. Pick something in your life today (a person, a pet, a country, a friend…) and feel how concentrating on our most treasured part of oneself grows as we share totally our love.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK Fall is in the air, days are shorter, before we know it, winter is here. See how long you can wait before turning on the furnace (unless health needs prevent it). Sweaters, coats and an extra blanket provide “free” warmth.

¡Dios es Grande Todo el Tiempo, Todo el Tiempo Dios es Grande!

DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL MSGR. FRANCISO RIOS, VICARIO PARROQUIAL …..

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Equipping Families to Pass On the Faith

Saints = Heroes! I recently saw a list of super hero characteristics and immediately thought of the heroes of the church - SAINTS! Courage? Check. A fighting spirit? Check. A strong moral code? Check. High toler-ance for pain? Unfortunately, check. The month of November is a wonderful time to cele-brate the saints who have come before us. Their bravery, courage and humility are examples of how they, through their actions and words, loved God with all their heart. They were far from perfect, often plagued by very human frailties such as pride, vanity and wastefulness. Yet in their imperfection, they listened to God’s voice and saw Jesus’ face in those they met. They walked with God through their most difficult moments. These saints stand beside us, interceding for us, even when we ourselves are not acting very “saintly”. How can you and the family begin to learn more about the saints? Pick one (or more!) of the follow-ing suggestions sometime this month: Look up the saints that share each family mem-

ber’s birthday. Match a family member’s interests with a patron

saint. Find out who is the patron saint of your family’s

heritage. Check out apps to learn more about the saints Mary App, Saint of the Day, Butler’s Lives of the Saints and Laudate are all ones to look into.

Attention Confirmationers (is that a word? Prob-ably not. I wonder what that squiggly red line un-

der it means…) If you started Confirmation this year and were not at one of the Masses we held the Rite of Entrance at last week, you have one last chance today (Sunday) at the 10:30am Mass. Go find Deepu (oh there’s that squig-gly red line again…) before Mass starts. Questions to Deepu at [email protected] or 408-874-6742

HOMEBOUND MINISTRY Have you noticed ladies and gentlemen going up to the Altar at the end of Mass and the Pre-sider handing them something? Have you won-dered who they are? What they are being giv-en? These parishioners are called “Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to the Sick and Homebound”. These devoted Minis-ters bring Holy Communion to our parishioners who are sick or homebound and unable to come to Mass. St. Catherine Church is very fortunate to have many trained ministers. If you have a family member or know someone who is unable to come to Mass and would like to re-ceive Communion at home, please let them know that they, or a family member, can call the Rectory and make a request for visits. A Minis-ter will be assigned to bring Eucharist to them once a week. Please keep these Ministers and the sick of our parish in your prayers.

DID YOU KNOW?

We are looking for more volunteers for Sun-day Hospitality. This is our Ministry at St. Catherine’s for parishioners and visitors to enjoy each other’s company with some Cof-fee and Doughnuts after Sunday morning Mass. It is simple to do, and all we ask is you stay 30 minutes before or after the Mass. Can you commit to once every 2 months? This is also a great opportunity for your ministry to serve the Parish and speak with parishioners about who you are and what you do. Check out the groups who have taken ad-vantage of this: Knights of Columbus, La-dies of Charity, Cub Scouts, Community Closet, and others. For more information, email me at [email protected] Please email me at [email protected] if you are interested.

VETERANS’ DAY

Veterans’ Day is on a Sunday this year. As a result, the school will not be holding our typical Veterans’ Day prayer service. However, we will be honoring our veterans next weekend with student created posters that will be placed in the foyer of the church and O’Donnell Center. Veterans, please know that you are remembered regularly in the prayers of the children at St. Cathe-rine School. We thank you for your service!

NOVEMBER SERVICE PROJECT — FOOD DRIVE

Each month the students of St. Catherine School participate in a service project. For the month of No-vember, students will be collecting non-perishable food items which will be sent to Reach Out for distri-bution. Kindergarten will make signs & work with their buddies to restock Reach Out, as they lead this project. Each class started collecting at the beginning of the month. During our Thanksgiving Prayer Service on November 20, classes will bring the food as their offering. This is one of two major food drives the school holds in order to help support Reach Out.
