THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

God is great all the time, all the time, God is great!

FROM THE DESK OF FR. FRANCIS KALAW, PAROCHICAL VICAR…

Our Gospel this Sunday shows us how Jesus desires to enter the home of the sinner even before they desire to follow Him. St. Francis de Sales, a French Saint and Doctor of the Church shares these thoughts: Our Savior helps us to find His Heart full of pity and kind mercy toward us even when our hearts are most hardened. Like Zacchaeus, we need only the desire to see who Jesus is. Our Re-deemer constantly bestows His holy love upon us. He continually pardons our daily faults against Him. He rewards our slightest services with great favors. He continues to recreate hu-manity through His merciful love for the whole human family. How does the greatness of God’s mercy shine forth? God’s mercy makes us embrace what is good. While we truly belong to God, God has no slaves, only friends who choose to love freely. Conversion, on our part, depends on our free response to God’s love. We are ready to re-spond wholeheartedly to God’s love when we begin to purify our affections and works by form-ing them according to the Gospel. If we let go of our desires for self-serving things we delightfully find that our spirit is liberated. Then we are free to choose the true and good life that God de-sires for us in Christ. This practice of letting go of all that is not of God in us is a continual life-long struggle. For cer-tainly as long as we live we shall have need of renewing ourselves. There is no clock so perfect that it does not need repair. Like the clock that needs to be oiled so that it will be less subject to rust, we need to anoint our heart with the Sacra-ments of Confession and the Eucharist to re-store our strength, and warm up our heart. In this way, we consecrate ourselves again to God’s love. If we really take care of our heart, each day we will renew it for God’s service. (Adapted from the writings of St. Francis de Sales)

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

Expectations, what difficulty we make for ourselves when we categorize people. Paying taxes is seldom a pleasant task, neither now nor in Jesus’ time. The protagonist in today’s Gospel, Zacchaeus, is judged a sinner by the people. But much to their surprise, Jesus acknowledges him, saying he must stay in his house that day. Of course the crowd grumbles that Jesus is staying with a sinner. But they have judged Zacchaeus by externals only. To their surprise he tells Jesus about his generosity to the poor and how he atones for any mistake he has made. Jesus tells him that he is saved (“salvation has come to this house..”). The final verse provides timeless grace, Jesus has come to seek and to save what was lost. In our hearts we know that we are all sinners who are in need of Jesus’ saving care. The parable describes how unexpected the truth can be when we see only externals then discover our mistake later. As sinners, or to put it more accurately, as humans who follow Jesus, we are to look beneath externals. We’ve been told to love one another as ourselves but do we actively seek to practice that love? A good beginning is to avoid unnecessary judgment, to see others as fellow travelers on our journey of faith. It’s not to be a win/lose choice; avoiding judgment makes it a win/win at the outset. Decrying sinfulness invites us to include ourselves in that company… not as a final judgment but as a call to emulate Jesus and “seek out the lost” knowing that at times we too are in that company. Each of us is a work in progress, seeking to be grace for each other, but failing and then trying again. It is in the effort, not the success, that we are purified, becoming peacemakers and gift givers. The amazing part of these efforts is the surprising way that we are affected by trying to be Christ for one another. We can’t control the reception we get from others but we can, upon reflection, see the change in ourselves. Jesus tells us in Scripture, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you.” This marvelous gift, meant for all, asks only that we open ourselves to discover the presence of Jesus’ peace within us. We set aside our sense of self, even if briefly, to bask in the glow of Jesus’ peace. We need to ask for the grace to recognize Jesus in those moments when his peace overcomes all our many trials. Jesus’ peace isn’t so much a place as it is an aura, a gift of calm which is always available if only we remember to ask for it. As we journey through the daily challenges we face, take some time to emulate Zacchaeus, climb an imaginary tree so you can see beyond the chaos below and recognize Jesus… the one who walks with us always and came to “seek and save what was lost.”

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK Perhaps our greenest effort comes from the trip we don’t take. Make a list of needs, then com-bine stops in one trip rather that many.

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Equipping Families to Pass On the Faith

One of the great gifts of our Catholic tradition is re-membrance of and prayer with the saints. The Church offers us an official canon, or list, of saints. On All Saints Day, we recall and pray with these saints. It is important to continue to tell these stories of saints and saintly people to our children so that they have ample models of people of faith for their own lives. Together as a family, name and tell the story of fa-vorite saints. Together prepare a list of some of the traits that these people have in common (generosity, courage, prayerfulness, and so on) After preparing this list, read the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:1-12. Iden-tify how the attitudes described are reflected in the lives of the saints and people you named. Pray together as a family a Litany of the Saints. (For example, the leader prays, “St. Elizabeth,” and the children are invited to reply, “Pray for us.”) Include in your list the saints and holy people you named in your discussion. Conclude by praying that your fami-ly will follow the example of these people as disci-ples of Jesus. ~ Excerpted from Sunday Connections, Loyola Press

Heard from a 2nd grader during a Sacramental Preparation Family Meeting: RPM: Does God listen to your pray-ers?

RR: Yes RPM: How do you know He is listening? (Without hesitation) RR: Because it is working!!

There are trained Spanish speaking ministers for support during a life crisis, such as family problems, loss of a loved one, divorce, job loss or illness. They listen without judgment, accompany you in your suffering and offer you hope, encourage-ment and prayer. It is free and completely confidential. If you or someone you know is facing a difficult time, there is someone is who may help. For more information please call Santa Alvarez at 408-722-8880. For English, call Claranne at 408-782-1413 or Kenny at 408-722-7600.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Adult: During the next week, what could you do to welcome someone who usually feels ex-cluded ? Child: Is there a child in your class or neigh-borhood who is left out of games and activities? What can you do?

COMMUNITY CLOSET The Community Closet of St. Catherine Church is hunting for a new home. We are an outreach ministry that provides clothing and household goods to the needy in our area. We ask the community for ideas in relocating, either to stor-age or to a facility in which to serve our clients. This property must be in good repair, compliant with local regulations AND free (or almost free) of charge. If you or someone you know may be able to help, please contact Debbie Molyneaux at (408) 500-5659. Thank you for your prayerful consideration!

WEEKLY OFFERINGS

Campaign FAQ: Q: How much funding is needed to begin the project?

A:.The Diocese requires that a parish has 80% of the cost of a project on-hand before moving forward. The Design and Planning Phases will start when the Capital Cam-paign is closer to reaching 80% of the total goal, in first approximately three years.

Q:Would it be possible for the architects to present a rendering of what we can get for $6M?

A:Yes. We can extend their contract to re-do the Con-ceptual Design with some “high-price” items removed.

Q:How many years would the campaign be?

A:We will ask people to pay their pledge to our Church Building Renewal in a manner appropriate to the individ-ual. For most people, a three-year payment plan will be best. This plan would meet the parish’s need to finish construction according to the proposed schedule. More to come next week...
