LECTIO DIVINA FOR NEXT WEEKEND

The great prophet, Elijah, makes a bold promise of God’s effortless generosity to the poor, starving widow of Zarephath. A poor widow in the Gospel places in the temple offertory a sacrifice out of her need and not her extra luxuries.

• How have you seen in your life, God generously giving to you?

• How have you given to God, family, others even though it was a great sacrifice to what you needed?

WELCOME TO ST. BRENDAN PARISH To register in the parish or to find out more about us, please contact Fr. Tom at the parish office at 440-777-7222. For information on our parish school, or to schedule a personal tour, contact Julie Onacila, principal, at 440-777-8433.

PASTOR’S COLUMN HEART OF A SHEPHERD CAMPAIGN GOAL: $30 MILLION PARISH GOAL: $252,773 … 50% RAISED COMES BACK TO THE PARISH PART I… RENOVATION OF BORROMEO AND ST. MARY SEMINARIES $20 MILLION The interior of our seminaries in Wickliffe, Ohio have not been renovated since the building was built over 70 years ago. The wiring for current technological needs, the heating system, lack of air conditioning, and the water system has been insufficient and long overdue for updating. The lack of adequate space and the thin walls have always been a challenge to quiet prayer or silent studies in the residential areas. The seminary is the home to our future priests for a potential of up to nine years of discernment, prayer, and studies. The seminary is also home to a community of both Capuchin Franciscan priests and Diocesan priests who serve fulltime as faculty members to our students. Being able to live in an environment that is safe and comfortable is important to all students today. St. Brendan Parish, from its early days, has always been instrumental in being a site for seminarians to come for field education experience, internship, and deaconate formation. This campaign is but another way for us to help those young men who are discerning the priesthood within the seminary formation program. PART II… CARE FOR RETIRED PRIESTS $7 MILLION In our Diocese, we are fortunate to have 258 active priests and 97 retired priests who have dedicated their lives to serving the Church. Many priests continue to serve our community of faith after retirement, and we are called to do what is necessary to provide them adequate care. However, the Retired Clergy Pension Fund is not yet fully funded, raising a concern that future retired priests will not receive adequate pensions. To ensure proper care for our clergy, while reducing annual premiums for parishes, this initiative will help us to meet the needs of our retired clergy. At one time, St. Brendan was a three to four priest parish. Given that we are now a one priest parish, many times, the retired priests in our area are called upon to fill in for Masses when the pastor is fulfilling other duties. PART III… SUPPORT FOR STUDENT LOAN REDUCTION FOR NEWLY ORDAINED CLERGY $3 MILLION When a seminarian is called to Holy Orders, many are burdened with financial hardship. A seminarian graduating today may have accumulated between $8,000 to $112,000 in educational debt. This initiative will help to reduce the debt that they have incurred over their seminary years, so that their limited income as a newly ordained priest can provide for their basic ongoing needs. PART IV… SUPPORT TO THE PARISH OF ST. BRENDAN St. Brendan Parish will be celebrating in 2024, 60 years of proclaiming the Gospel and lifting up the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. In order to ready ourselves for this milestone year, I would like to rejuvenate the interior of our church, the heart of where we worship God, gather as a community, and extend hospitality to those who come to us for events like Marriages, Funerals, (Pastor’s Column cont’d on page 4)

MAY THEY REST IN PEACE Please remember in your prayers Marty Klayko, husband of Marge.

May his soul and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

ALL SOULS --EVENING MASS On All Souls Day, Tuesday, November 2, there will be an additional Mass at 7pm. We invite the whole parish community - AND IN A SPECIAL WAY, ALL THOSE WHO HAVE LOST A LOVED ONE WITHIN THE PAST YEAR - to come together and support each other as we remember all of the faithful departed.

PARISH BOOK OF LIFE Our parish Book of Life for our faithful departed is now displayed near the baptismal font. You are invited to enter the names of your deceased relatives, friends and neighbors. The faithful departed will be remembered during the month of November and especially at the Masses on All Souls Day, November 2.

(Pastor’s Column cont’d from page 3) Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, Graduation, etc. Depending on how much we raise through this campaign and other donations will help us plan for how vast the rejuvenation will take place. I would like to invest in painting the interior, tile under the pews and in the sanctuary, placing new carpet throughout the church and chapel, and updating furniture in the sanctuary. Thank you for your consideration and participation in investing not only in the future of the priesthood in our Diocese, but also in the life of our St. Brendan Community. I live for Jesus Christ, Fr. Tom

YEAR OF SAINT JOSEPH (December 8, 2020 - December 8, 2021) Prayer to Saint Joseph for Employment Saint Joseph, you were yourself once faced with the responsibility of providing the necessities of life for Jesus and Mary. Look down with fatherly compassion upon me in my anxiety over my present inability to support my family. Please help me to find gainful employment very soon, so that this heavy burden of concern will be lifted from my heart and that I am soon able to provide for those whom God has entrusted to my care. Help us to guard against bitterness and discouragement, so that we may emerge from this trial spiritually enriched and with even greater blessings from God. Amen.

SUPPORT ST. BRENDAN SCHOOL

NAVIGATOR NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL 4th Grade Bird Beak Experiment – Mrs. Daisy Johnson’s 4th grade has been studying the internal and external structures of animals in Science class. To help bring one of the lessons to life, they used items such as chopsticks, clothespins, spoons, and toothpicks to represent different types of bird beaks. The students were challenged to pick up various types of bird food, represented by pasta, sunflower seeds, rubber bands, and popcorn kernels, with each type of beak and then discuss adaptations for each beak that would allow for greater food consumption. The overall consensus was that birds with wider beaks have it easier than those with narrow beaks. 6th Grade Mineral Identification – In a recent Science class with Miss Jenna Baechle, the 6th grade made observations and performed tests to identify minerals. For example, the class was able to identify the mineral magnetite because it has the special characteristic of being magnetic. The students worked together to identify 12 other minerals including quartz, kaolin and mica. Library Mysteries – October is once again Mystery Month in the St. Brendan School Library. The 5th grade students, who are reading mysteries this month for their ELA genre projects, arrived in the library last week to discover quite a mess on the floor. They were tasked with studying the visual clues and examining the text statements of the main suspects to draw conclusions and identify the culprit. The junior high students are also all attempting to use their close reading skills to solve a “5 minute” mystery story during one of their October library classes, while the 2nd and 3rd grades worked to connect four clues from the Mystery Board to identify a popular character from children’s literature. Volleyball Success – Two of our girls volleyball teams ended the season with great playoff success. The 8th grade team coached by Mrs. Charlotte Seith and Mrs. Suzanne Smith and the 6th grade team coached by Mrs. Jill McNamara each finished as the runner-up in the CYO city-wide championships for their grade level. Congratulations!
