Presidentially Speaking Dave Richards 407-491-4357 [email protected] SAFETY MAKES GOOD CENTS! You may be thinking I made a typo above but no, I meant “cents” not “sense.” Safety in the CHC is everyone’s business, and paying attention to safety can save time and money. Safety risks are all around us, and we encounter real “near misses” almost every day (at least I do). Sometimes we put ourselves in danger of being unsafe, but other times an unsafe situation pops up and we are not prepared. For example, on a recent hike (even knowing I should be alert to bad sidewalks) I tripped and if it had not been for the people in front of and beside me, I would have gone down. Thus, my point is twofold: (1) we can control safety in our lives and (2) we should be prepared for those cases when an unsafe event occurs. As members of the CHC we might think that safety is a personal thing, and I agree. But safety is something we should all be conscious of regarding the terrain we hike on, the weather we hike in, and the potential for an accident caused by the situations we encounter. Thus, I wish to propose several suggestions for us to consider each time we plan to hike. For HIKE LEADERS: please make sure your hike description accurately indicates the type of terrain to be encountered on your hike and the level of skill needed (e.g., strenuous, energetic, hills, etc.). I know we do a pretty good job of this but I often hear complaints on hikes that a member was unaware of what actually occurred on a hike vs. its description. Second, as hike leaders we should spend about 30 seconds in the circle-up on the overall hike terrain, in particular regarding potential hazards on the route (e.g., uneven sidewalks, road protocol, tree roots, ice, etc.). This will remind those on your hike of the likely issues they may encounter and what you expect them to do, where relevant. Then, when a hazard is encountered, leaders should stop and ensure that everyone understands the increased risk for an accident. I have been on many hikes where leaders do this routinely and I have been on others where no mention of a hazard is made. Finally, hike leaders should be sure to stop periodically throughout the hike to make sure everyone is together and not dragging apart so communications can be passed along. For HIKERS: please come prepared to a hike with the right equipment (e.g., boots, water, rain gear, etc.) so that you give yourself the best opportunity to hike without incident. Second, pay attention to the hike leader’s instructions because they know the terrain and any potential issues. Also, pay attention to the hiking surface as it changes and use common sense to avoid falls. Finally, help out your fellow hikers by making them aware of information being passed back from the hike leader and pointing out potential issues (e.g., joggers or bikers coming). AND MOST IMPORTANT: have an emergency contact name and phone number plus information of any medications you are taking with you, either on paper or as a contact so noted on your cell phone. This month, Karen Pressman is taking over the Safety Committee Chair from Cleo Current. I am thankful to Karen for stepping up to this important task and look forward to her columns in Newsteps regarding safety advice. REMINDER: The next General meeting is Saturday, November 3, at Camp Onwego at 7:00 p.m., following the usual social time at 5:30 p.m. and a potluck dinner at 6:00 p.m. Come and hear the results of our elections plus my “State of the CHC” remarks summarizing my first term as your President. SAFETY MAKES GOOD CENTS!

You may be thinking I made a typo above but no, I meant “cents” not “sense.” Safety in the CHC is

everyone’s business, and paying attention to safety can save time and money. Safety risks are all around us, and we encounter real “near misses” almost every day (at least I do). Sometimes we put ourselves in danger

of being unsafe, but other times an unsafe situation pops up and we are not prepared.

But safety is something we should

all be conscious of regarding the terrain we hike on, the weather we hike in, and the potential for an accident caused by the situations we encounter. Thus, I wish to propose several suggestions for us to consider each time we plan to hike.

For HIKE LEADERS: please make sure your hike description accurately indicates the type of terrain to be encountered

on your hike and the level of skill needed (e.g., strenuous, energetic, hills, etc.).

For HIKERS: please come prepared to a hike with the right equipment (e.g., boots, water, rain gear, etc.) so that you

give yourself the best opportunity to hike without incident.

I am thankful to Karen for

stepping up to this important task and look forward to her columns in Newsteps regarding safety advice. REMINDER: The next General meeting is Saturday, November 3, at Camp Onwego at 7:00 p.m., following the

usual social time at 5:30 p.m. and a potluck dinner at 6:00 p.m. Come and hear the results of our elections plus my “State of the CHC” remarks summarizing my first term as your President.

Adopt-a-Trail for November 2012 Carol Lewanski 216-261-0307

Volunteers are needed for what is always the busiest

day of year for trail work, the second Saturday of November (see Schedule for November 10). We will be using backpack leaf blowers and rakes (all tools provided by CVNP) to remove autumn leaves from culverts and ditches so that rains and eventually the spring snow melt can easily run off the trails. This will limit erosion and help maintain dry and safe conditions for hikers — that’s us! Stay after work for crock-potluck. RSVP appreciated but not required.

Help with Mileage Recording

Gayle Shroy [email protected] 440-209-0289 With more than 1,000 members and about 300 hikes per

month, keeping track of member mileage can be a daunting task. There are steps that members can take to make the Recording Pathfinder’s job less overwhelming. All hikers can help immensely by being sure their first and last names are printed clearly on their attendance cards. Many members use address labels, but if those aren’t available, legible printing is a must! Then, be sure to turn your card into the leader at the end of the hike! If there’s a discrepancy in your mileage as reported in Newsteps, on the CHC website, or in the Six Month Reports, please notify Gayle Shroy at [email protected] as soon as possible.

Additionally, leaders can help in several ways:

If you don’t have e-mail access, try to find a member on your hike who does use e-mail and is willing to send in the list for you. If no one is willing or able, it is okay to send the list using the U.S. mail to Gayle Shroy at the address in the Directory. Follow the directions below for how to create the list. No matter how you send in the list, send any visitor names and addresses to the Membership Chair, Alice Nelson.

Be sure you know how many members were on your hike and make sure the list of names you send in has the correct number of names.

Remember to put the date of the hike and letter code from the schedule (e.g., 30d. or 11/30/12d.) in the subject line of the e-mail. You do not need to alphabetize the list of names, but be sure to put the leader’s name first (and second if there are two leaders) on the list.

Follow the preferred format for sending in the hike by e-mail (see below). You can always find the format on the CHC website in the Members Only area under Hike Leader Info.

Double-check the spelling/typing of names before sending the list. If you’re unsure whether a hiker is a member or if you’re reading the handwriting correctly, check the current list of active members found on the CHC website in the Members Only area, under Hike Leader Info. Scroll down to the link for the Active Hikers List. The list is updated weekly. If a name is not there, send the name to Alice Nelson as a visitor.

Send your e-mail within 2 to 3 days of your hike. It takes time to scroll back to find a hike that’s a week or more old and then forward to continue with current hikes. Hikes on the last day of the month need to be sent in no later than the next day. If you have a question regarding mileage or hike

statistics, send your question to [email protected]. You can always find the e-mail address at the top of any Mile-a-Day list in any Newsteps. Do not use the e-mail address in the 2012 Directory for Gayle Shroy. Everyone’s cooperation is greatly appreciated!

Trail Tales

Karen Leary [email protected] Have you read a good book and wanted to talk about it

with friends? Here’s your chance to hike and discuss a book! Look to this column each month for a suggested book to read and discuss on the trails. For November, the book is A Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes.

This intense new novel follows a middle-aged man as he

contends with a past he has never much thought about — until his closest childhood friends return with a vengeance, one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present. Tony Webster thought he’d left all this behind as he built a life for himself, and by now his marriage and family and career have fallen into an amicable divorce and retirement. But he is then presented with a mysterious legacy that obliges him to reconsider a variety of things he thought he’d understood all along, and to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Appalachian Trail —

Connecticut and Massachusetts June 1 to 9, 2013

Marilyn Brundage [email protected] 216-521-3198 Matt Collings and Marilyn Brundage are making plans to

hike all of Connecticut and a portion of Massachusetts on the Appalachian Trail in June 2013. The distance will be approximately 70 to 80 miles; the plan is to hike 7 days, have 1 day without hiking, and 1 travel day. There will be a group dinner at 5:30 p.m. on June 1, and the first day of hiking will be June 2.

We will stay at local hotels/motels. Lodging information will be forthcoming. We will attempt to keep the lodging prices as reasonable as possible. Food and miscellaneous items will be at your own expense. Our preference will be to find a shuttle driver for transportation (estimated cost $100 per person). If we cannot find a driver, we will shuttle ourselves with everyone sharing shuttle duties.

If you are interested in the trip, please send Marilyn a

deposit of $100 by April 1, 2013. This is non-refundable unless the trip is cancelled. Space is limited so it’s best to make your payment early. Spots are only guaranteed once payment is received.

Due to the number of miles and the nature of the AT,

leader approval is required for this trip. We want to make sure that those attending will be able to successfully and safely complete the hike. Feel free to contact Matt or Marilyn with questions.

Looking Backwards: 1960

Donna Pounds [email protected]

Last month, CHC members received a large white envelope with CHC election material: a list of candidates complete with photographs and biographical information, a ballot, and two envelopes (to ensure an anonymous vote). Once the ballots are mailed in, a teller committee will count our ballots and our new officers will be installed at the Holiday Party. Now contrast this with the way it was done in 1960 when our membership was less than 200.

Election of Officers

“As a result of a motion at the October [1960] General Meeting, the Election of Officers will take place on Dec. 16th at the General Meeting. Refreshments will be served while the ballots are being counted. Installation of Officers will follow.”

Newsteps November 1960

Thank You Notes

Thank you to all the Club members who were so caring after my fall. Special thanks go to Therese Conway and Suzanne Bellini who spent so much time helping retrieve my car and get me home. I've been checked and have no medical problems. A mildly sore hand was it. Earl Waltz

NEWSTEPS deadline is the 10th of the month. Send information to [email protected] (please include “Newsteps” in subject line). Trip details should be no more than ½ page.

Photos are welcome.

Keep Informed of CHC Happenings Darlene Jacobson [email protected]

CHC has an e-mail process that allows us to contact all

members on our list with current happenings within the Club. Those on the list are informed via e-mail of changes to hike information, event reminders, notifications about the availability of hiking schedule of activities, Newsteps, new photos, hiking statistics, or other changes to the CHC website, deaths and memorial information, etc. We try to limit the e-mails to about once a week; however, if time-sensitive information comes up, an additional e-mail may arrive in your inbox.

If you are not currently receiving these messages, but

have an e-mail address and would like to keep abreast of CHC happenings, please send an e-mail to [email protected] to start the process. Even though Tim Mendelsohn is now residing in the sunny Carolinas, he is still an active CHC volunteer who manages the e-mail listing. When Tim adds your e-mail information to the list, you will receive an e-mail invitation from Google Groups to join the group.

After you electronically accept the invitation (don’t worry

— the invitation comes with easy-to-follow instructions), you will start receiving our e-mails. If at any time you decide you’d rather not receive these messages, simply send an e-mail to the same address listed above and you’ll be removed.

Social Committee to Reorganize

Ruth Skuly 216-371-9535 [email protected] With the start of 2013, Rhonda Skalsky will take over

leadership of the Social Committee. Ruth Skuly will remain a member as will a number of the current Social Committee members, but we are looking for additional volunteers to help plan and organize social events for the Club. New ideas are welcome.

Responsibilities include attending the one planning

meeting that we hold to set the Social Calendar and assign tasks (usually in November) and being available by e-mail during the year for discussion of mid-course corrections. Hiking Safely Doesn’t Have to Be a Balancing Act! Karen Pressman 216-780-1134 [email protected]

Note: Karen Pressmen is replacing Cleo Current as Safety Coordinator for the Club. For any future safety issues, concerns, or questions, or for any Club functions where a member sustains any injury requiring medical attention, please contact Karen at 216-780-1134 or [email protected].

As bipeds, we humans spend tremendous energy maintaining our balance while walking. We balance our torso and

upper body with just 2 points of contact on the ground: our feet. Using 1 or 2 hiking poles increases these points of contact and significantly reduces the risk of falling, something we all need to consider with the colder temperatures and icy conditions fast approaching. Who wouldn’t benefit from an “extra set of legs” on uneven or slippery terrain?

In addition to reducing the F word (Falls, Fractures, and Fatalities), the use of hiking poles reduces stress on the joints.

Your knees, hips, and ankles take a pounding when hiking on a rocky trail, turning them into mush, especially when walking downhill. Hiking poles help to lift thousands of pounds of pressure off these joints over the course of a day, enabling you to hike comfortably longer and farther. A 2008 British study reports that those using hiking poles perceive themselves to be less fatigued than when they covered the same distance without poles, even though oxygen sensors showed they were working harder and climbing at a faster pace.

Using your arms and core muscles help to build and condition your upper body, improving your power and endurance

for ascending steep hills. Poles facilitate a more upright posture, which improves breathing. Walking with poles provides weight-bearing exercise for the arms, legs, and spine, and may help improve bone density. There’s nothing like a long, steady uphill to get you in the fat-burning zone and using poles provides a total body workout too!

Some hikers shun pole users for fear of being stabbed. For those of us who choose to use poles,

here are a few reminders regarding pole etiquette:

Keep a safe distance between hikers. If someone is crowding you, step aside and let them pass. On steep uphill, poles can slip. Hikers too close can be injured. On steep downhill, allow extra space both in front and in back. Avoid reaching forward when planting your pole as this can jab the hiker ahead in the Achilles

tendon. Always know where your tips are. If carrying your poles, turn the tips forward or down (see

diagram).

Hike Schedules for Smartphones Bob Shroy [email protected]

Some hikers have been checking online schedules with

their smartphones for quite awhile now, but the usual three-column format for schedules will not display well on a phone’s small screen. To improve the display for smartphones, we experimented with copies of schedules where the hikes are in one column. This format seems to work better for the smartphones, especially in the landscape orientation (the phone on its side).

We invite you to take a look. You can view the schedule

for a specific month by pointing your phone’s browser to www.clevelandhikingclub.org/Mobile/home.aspx or scanning the left QRcode below. Or, to get a copy of the schedule that is always updated to the current month, go to www.clevelandhikingclub.org/Mobile/HikeSchedule.pdf or scan the right QRcode below. We would appreciate any comments from smartphone users.

Can Committee Donors Alice Kruse 440-247-6049 [email protected]

Donna Pounds, CHC historian, took the time to look at

old Newsteps to discover the beginning of our can collecting. September 1991 reported that Wilma Howard collected cans “to clean up the environment and earn money for the CHC treasury.” Earlier individuals had been picking up cans as we walked for their own benefit. The first can committee included Wilma, Enis Luveson, Ruth Sloggett, and Louise McDonough.

September can collecters:

Smiljka Bosnar Debbie Brindza Karen Birt Marie Buser Gale Chun Larry Clager Martha Coates Margeret Daniels Leo Deininger Ken Fink John Gabrovsek Myrna Groger Jane Hill Jeff and Connie Kearns Doreen King Frank and Michele Klaus Carol Lewanski Betsey Luce Eloise Martinelli Bob Maruna

Joan McDermitt Kathy Miki Bill Miller Marv and Renate Miller Judy Muzzy Steve and Sandy Paliga Barb Palumbo Donna Pounds Sandy Phillips Bill and Chris Rettig Barb Rhodes Marty Ritzert Penny Roberts Melinda Saulson John and Tammy Sech Bob and Gayle Shroy Barb Sprague Dick and Darlene Weigandt Sandy Wheeler Susan Wright

And the four people who left cans at camp with no

names on the bags. Thank you all.
