Spring Term—Issue 4 Friday 14th February 2020
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! Treasure Island is a rip-roaring success!
Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel Treasure Island is rightly regarded as a classic of the adventure genre, with its salty language and labyrinthine plot full of intrigue, betrayal and double crosses.
In the assured hands of the Sacred Heart Performing Arts team – led by Ms Mazur and Ms Trustman, the
1973 musical version of Stevenson’s book (with music by Cyril Ornadel and script by Bernard Miles and
Josephine Wilson) provided the basis for four performances of outstanding quality this week, which saw
around 500 spectators right royally entertained!

The most challenging Sacred Heart
production from a linguistic
standpoint in many years (staff of a
particular vintage may recall Mr Cooke’s
2005 production of Dr Jekyll and Mr
Hyde, another example of a 19th century
text brought to life on the Sacred Heart
stage), this production demanded the
highest standards of acting, storytelling
and diction from the cast. Drawn from
Years 7-10 our young performers uni-
formly rose to the challenge, improving
their craft each day to a glorious climax
on the final night.
Beza Efrem’s Jim Hawkins contained the
perfect mixture of determination,
naivety and good nature as she added
another fine performance to her
performing arts CV which also included
the lead in Annie a couple of years ago.
With her youthful, enthusiastic air, Beza
was perfectly complemented by India
Lodge’s sinister, reptilian Long John Sil-
ver. The role of Silver often lends itself to
caricature, but India’s performance, with
her sly use of gesture and facial
expression, succeeded in giving us a new,
more duplicitous take on the legendary
character.
The challenging roles of Squire
Trelawney, Doctor Livesey and
Captain Smollett fell to Erhus
Digba, Daniela Athieno Jawiloka
and Mirana Claye.
These vital characters impart much of the plot exposition of the play, and each performer demonstrated an impressively secure under-standing of their dialogue and roles, performing with perfect diction and assurance and thus helping guide the audience through the complexities of the plot.

Elsewhere in the cast. Augustina Mbah, Owen Ehioghae and Arinze Egesi infused their roles as Blind Pew, Black Dog and Billy Bones with the perfect mixture of menace and mystery, using voice and physicality very effectively. Also among the supporting cast, Annie Boamah excelled as Ben Gunn, making an appropriately eccentric and bizarre castaway, while Heaven Yonas demonstrated an assured grasp of the character of Hands, with some excellent verbal and non-verbal acting.
The fluid and imaginative staging of the
production, complemented by wonderful
costumes, a superb backdrop and
convincing props, all contributed to the
ambience and helped create many
moments of palpable and genuine
tension. The musical numbers were
energetic and engaging, and it was also
notable that the background acting and
ability of all the ensemble to “stay in role”
at all times was truly outstanding. For this
Ms Mazur and Ms Trustman's steward-
ship of the production deserves much
credit, as does the support and hard work
of Ms Harmer and Mr Udebhulu.
5
Special mention must go to the band and the musicians, led by Ms Harris, with Ms Mazur on piano,
Jonathan Lawson on trombone, Rhian Grant on keyboard, Reuel Rodriquez-Palmer on drums and Petra
Kasozi on keyboards. Their sense of unity and musicality proved invaluable. As ever, Mrs Barton also pro-
vided wonderful support with costume fixing and fittings to name just two of the many roles she
customarily fulfils.
6
Among the stage crew, Stephanie Siraut was
rightly given a special mention on the final
night for her outstanding contribution to
Sacred Heart performing arts over the past
seven years, and she was ably assisted by
Francesca Pires.
All in all, another dramatic triumph on the Sacred Heart stage! Roll on next year! Mr L Williams, Assistant Headteacher

BLIND DATE READING!
Some of our very creative students have helped me transform the school book trolley into a BLIND DATE READING TROLLEY. We have chosen a selection of books from the school library, wrapped them and put key-words relating to the book on the front. Students will not know what the book cover looks like or what they are reading until they have taken it out. We are hoping that students will pick stories that they would like to read based on the keywords and not to be put off by the cover of the book. There are some fantastic books to choose from.

VICTORY FOR OUR Y7 BOYS WHO WON THE SOUTH LONDON YOUTH GAMES ON WEDNESDAY, 12TH FEBRUARY 2020
Coach Ojuriye, and the School, is very proud of our Y7 boys who won the South London Youth Games this week. Our boys were well behaved and performed extremely well. A girl from another school fell over in a relay race and was very upset—two of our pupils ran across the track and helped the girl up. Her teacher was very impressed and thanked the boys. As they geared up for the final race, they formed a huddle and using encouraging words such as “come on guys, this is the last race, this is the most important—give your all!” and so they did and raced to victory. This is just the attitude that Sacred Heart expects from all our pupils. Well done Year 7!

Year 8 Girls Netball won their first league game against COLA 5:2. The year 7 Girls Netball won their first league game against St. Michaels 10:5. U16 Girls Football made it through to the quarter finals and the U13 are play-ing their quarter final game on March 9th.

We understand from our local NHS Trust that hospi-
tal appointments are now paperless. To reflect this
we are changing the procedure needed when in-
forming school of an appointment.
Please can all parents follow the advice below.
Hospital appointments should be evidenced to
school as follows:
Where an appointment letter is sent, please
present to school as evidence of
appointment.
Where a text has been sent for the appoint-
ment, please either show the office staff the
text, or forward the text to your child so they
can show the office staff.
For booked GP appointments please follow
the same procedure, as most GP services will
notify you by text.
For early morning walk-in appointments your
practice should be able to provide you with a
slip to confirm that the appointment has tak-
en place. Please give to your child so they can
hand to reception on their arrival to avoid
them being marked late.

Parents are reminded that students should not be taken out of school for any reason during exam periods. Medical or dental appoint-ments must not be made during this time, as exams cannot be resched-
uled or taken at another time to suit the student. A student who misses an exam (for whatever reason) will score zero
marks, exactly as they would for a public exam such as a GCSE or an A
level. In such a circumstance, subject teachers will base their assessment
on classwork and homework and write reports accordingly.
