New & Ongoing in Our Community

From Fr. Dan, Administrator

Dear Friends,

Our beloved pastor and dear friend, Fr. John went to God at 3:00am Easter Sunday morning. As we trust Fr. John is united with Jesus in his resurrection, may Jesus grant us all an abundance of his consolation. Fr. John

is so dearly loved. A Christ-centered priest has gone to Christ. God bless Fr. John, his whole family, and all of you, his beloved extended Church family. A great man is in Heaven!

Fr. John’s favorite scripture text for funerals: “We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep. Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will surely not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself, with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise

first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore, console one another with these words.” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.)

Fr. John, out of his deep friendship with Christ, exemplified this: “Fraternal love and service, being builders of bridges and unity are all part of our friendship with the Good Shepherd, the divine bridegroom. I appeal to all of my brothers in the presbyterate to look into your own heart to see how we can be healers and builders of unity. It takes a lot of patience, a lot of humility, a lot of love. It takes a capacity to forgive, to begin again, to love first, the way Christ loves us while we are still in sin.” – Cardinal Sean to Boston Priests, 4/16/19.

Fr. John changed history! By his pastoring our Collaborative from its birth, by his Christ-like healing presence in tumultuous times, by his presence when someone was hurting, by his homilies, by his spiritual direction, by his leading Cursillo, and by so much more!

Heartfelt Condolences, Fr. Dan

April 28 ~ Second Sunday of Easter (Sunday of Divine Mercy)

We hear today of Jesus’ gift to us and of his commission: “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” He was speaking to his apostles, who were fearfully gathered behind a locked door, but his message extends to each of us, here and now. We are the ones Jesus spoke of when he said: “Blessed are those who have not seen but believe.” We are to be his instruments of mercy and peace. Bring that mercy and peace to your family, neighborhood, school, and workplace this week. Notice the difference it makes to others!

Divine Mercy Sunday Holy Hour The Sunday after Easter - April 28 this year - is Divine Mercy Sunday. Fr. Adrian Milik, our former parochial vic-ar and the current Administrator at St. Jude Parish in Wal-tham, will be celebrating a 3:00pm Divine Mercy Holy Hour at St. Jude on this day, to pray for God’s mercy on all people around the world. All are welcome to join him for an hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, for a short reflection on the revelations given to St. Faustina, and for an opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Special Easter Collection: Clergy Health & Retirement Trust

On behalf of our priests, especially our senior priests who have been there for us for decades, we thank you for your generous support of last week’s special Easter Collec-tion. Our priests in good standing have always answered our calls. Like us, they are troubled by the current events taking place in the Church, yet they are always there for us. Thank you for being there for them. Please follow us on Facebook or at clergytrust.org to learn more about the ways in which Boston priests answer the call every day. Thank you for your prayers and support.

Six-Week Grief Support Group Begins This Sunday, April 28

Join us for a 6-week grief support workshop “Living with Grief”. The death of a loved one is unlike any other. Whether the death was sudden and tragic or one with warn-ing and preparation, the reality of death leaves most of us shocked, confused, and sad. These feelings may last for years. Grieving people need time and space to honor their grief. Your loss may be recent, or it may be years ago.

Our Lady’s and Sacred Heart has developed a program to help you and yours start the healing process. This group

Cardinal Seán on the Protection of Life “There are two bills proposed in the Massachusetts legislature which have extreme consequences for the protection of life. The bills should, in my judgement, be opposed even by those who support the Roe v. Wade decision. I do not ad-dress the proposed legislation from a religious perspective but as an issue of human rights, in this case the right to life, as I also speak to other human rights issues such as welcoming immigrants to our country, supporting a strong social safety net for the poor and the call for racial justice.

“The proposed legislation would produce the following consequences: Allow abortion in Massachusetts during all nine months of pregnancy. Eliminate the requirement to make efforts to care for a child who survives an attempted abortion.

“We do not seek to judge or blame individuals, particularly women and families faced with excruciatingly difficult preg-nancies. Our objective is to consider the implications of the proposed legislation, which among its provisions removes any limits to abortion in the third trimester of pregnancy. Legislators, I hope, will not presume that broad support in Massachusetts for legal abortion automatically translates into willingness on the part of the public to embrace the ex-treme provisions of these bills. The unborn children who will be most directly impacted by the proposals deserve to have their lives protected.”

Msgr. Dennis Sheehan Homily Given April 22, 2001

2nd Sunday of Easter—Liturgical Year C

Every single day, God is at work making silk purses out of sows’ ears. If resurrection stories tell us about what it means for Jesus to be alive again, they tell us more about what happens to people who meet him. If Jesus is somewhat the same, he’s also very different. Much the same can be said for those who meet the ris-en Jesus. They are much the same, yet very much changed. Today’s Gospel is a case in point. Let’s look at it to see how Jesus is changed. More importantly, let’s examine the good news to see how the disciples are changed. Maybe they are a clue how God is at work today in the Risen Jesus, making silk purses out of sows’ ears.

The Gospel begins with the evening of the first Easter. John is careful to note the fear, confusion, and sense of failure that invades their gathering. Their beloved Jesus has been executed as a criminal. Maybe they are next. So they hide in a locked room, probably listening with dread-filled hearts for the tramp of the soldier’s foot on the stair. Judas, now gone, had arranged his capture. When the going got rough, they panicked and ran. The blustering Peter even denied he knew Jesus. They are washouts, filled with remorse, fear, and fail-ure.

Suddenly, here is Jesus. He startles them to the marrow of their bones. But note carefully what happens. No condemnation, no scolding, no rebuke. “Peace be with you.” He dissolves their fear; he heals their grief. He forgives their failure. “Peace be with you.”

He does not ignore the past. He makes peace with the past. And what a peace it is. Listen to his next words. “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” As the disciples have known Christ’s forgiveness and peace, they are to share it. Theirs is nothing less than to give the peace they receive. They are to find hearts once trapped like theirs in failure and grief. They are to be Christ who forgives for others.

Jesus who comes to them is much the same, yet very different. So with these clustered disciples. In many ways, they are the same; yet, in important ways, they are very different.

The story has a sequel. When the absent Thomas returns, his wide-eyed colleagues can hardly wait to tell him what happened. But Thomas is moved neither by their testimony nor by the change he saw in them. Je-sus comes to them again. Again, his greeting: “Peace be with you”. This time he turns to Thomas. Again, no rebuke. Instead, he offers Thomas what he had asked. See now how Thomas changes. From refusal to bold confession of faith. From doubt to belief. This is resurrection. The Scripture today recalls a host of people like Thomas – they meet the Lord. They remain themselves yet they are very different.

For us? Are we so different from those first disciples? Are we at times hiding behind closed doors or fear or guilt? Today’s good news is that when we meet the risen Jesus this Easter we can ourselves be changed. There are parts of ourselves that shame us. There are parts of ourselves that we seem unable to control. There are parts of us we don’t want to live with. It’s to those parts of our lives that today’s good news can speak. Jesus is here present in our gathering just as truly as he was in that upper room. “Blessed still more he says of us that are those who do not see and yet believe.” To us he offers peace; to us he offers the possi-bility of change; to us he offers hope of renewal.

We too – at Eucharist, in prayer, in the sacrament of reconciliation, in our relationships with each other – we too are raised up by the resurrection of Jesus. He speaks peace to us. He breathes the Spirit of for-giveness and peace on us. He sends us to share that forgiveness with those who wait for it. God indeed is at work today still making silk purses out of sows’ ears – even you and me.

In addition, black plastic takeout containers cannot go in the recycling. They also should go in the trash. Thank you!

Growing up on the edge of poverty, Hector wrestled with homelessness, and was struggling to find food. While playing basketball in a local Church league, he met Fr. Paul O’Brien, who encouraged him to go to college.

Fr. Paul was there for Hector at every step of his journey to college and beyond. With his help and guidance, Hector went on to play basketball for Regis College, graduate, and now works as a school counselor to give back to students the same hope and inspiration he received. Like Fr. Paul, our senior priests in good standing have been helping others for decades.

As we celebrate this Easter with our families and friends, please remember the Boston priests who have helped us along our life journey and consider making a gift of thanks to the special Easter collection for their health and retirement needs.

Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.
