RIDDLE OF THE MONTH Ianna Castillo

1. Which one of Santa’s Reindeer can be seen on Valentine’s Day?

2. Why are Christmas Trees so bad at knitting? 3. A thief enters a shop and threatens the clerk,

forcing him to open the safe. The clerk says, "The code for the safe is different every day, and if you hurt me you'll never get the code". But the thief manages to guess the code on his own. What is the code?

Confirmation Retreat Avinash Singh

On Friday January 25, the seventh graders of Sacred Heart Catholic Academy and PS 113 went on a Confirmation retreat. During that time, we learned more about our faith and we grew closer to God. Our demonstrator, Tony Ballize, brought Jesus to our attention. We were able to get a break from our social life and have that time to reconnect with God. He made us repeat the phrase “God is good all the time” and that showed that God will be able to help us through the good times and bad. Although it was a religious retreat, we had some fun times. We played games, we watched videos on how physically challenged people could achieve so much, and that even though you may feel like you are not worthy, you will always be in the eyes of the Lord. He created a positive atmosphere and he had everyone’s attention. We meditated for twenty minutes and it didn’t feel like it because we were so focused on our relationship with God. Through this retreat, we are prepared for Confirmation and we are starting a new life with God.

Sweetheart Dance Olivia Gorski

On Friday, February 1st, Sacred Heart hosted their annual father-daughter Sweetheart Dance. All girls were to dress up formally, and bring their fathers to our school for a lovely night. The event lasted from 7 to about 10 o’clock. Our gym was beautifully decorated with hearts, and colorful balloons. There were lots of fun filled activities such as limbo, dancing, raffles, a photo with your dad, as well as a tie contest. The DJ played many hot hits, and great throwback music. The guests enjoyed many sweets, including cupcakes, cookies, brownies, as well as ice cream, which were all Valentine’s Day themed. It was an awesome night, filled with memories that last a lifetime!

8th Grade Ring Day Alessandra Costa

In our 8th grade year, there are many fun and joyous events we get to participate in and Ring Day is one of them. The ceremony started with the 8th grade walking in with candles burning. After the procession, we sat through the ceremony and Father Fred blessed our rings. After the Blessing of the rings, each of us individually came up with our parents to receive our rings, which is a sign of maturity and responsibility. After everyone received their rings, we all processed out and the fun continued on with a party. Everyone was dressed up, and there was music and dancing to end the day.

Eighth Grade Trip to Hour Children Emily Trujillo

Christmas is not only a time to receive, but it is also the time to give back to those in need. This December, both 8th grade classes visited the Hour Children Daycare. Hour Children is a daycare where children who are in need, go to be taken care of during the day. Their ages range from 2-4 years old. Many of these children’s parents are in prison or are not doing very well in life. These children are not able to experience Christmas the way most children do. The eighth graders wanted to give back, so they brought the children toys that they could open on Christmas Day. That wasn’t the only thing the eighth grade did for them. They also stayed with the children and played games, created art, and read to them. This trip will always have a very special place in the eighth graders’ hearts. It is a reminder of how blessed we all are and how we should always try to lend a hand to those in need.

Upper School Math Bee Illustrated by Erica Hennis

This year, eighteen 6th, 7th and 8th Graders competed in the upper grade math bee. Christian McKay, an 8th grader, won and advanced not only to the Regional Math Bee, but the Diocesan Math Bee as well. He came in 2nd at the Diocesan Math Bee.

Freedom A short story by: Clark Kent

A long time ago, there was a country. The country gave its citizens blindfolds, claiming they don’t need to see what is going on in the world. The citizens were told they were in the greatest country in the world and believed they were told the truth about the world. They were told they could do whatever they want, yet their choices were limited by rules. They followed those rules until they took their blindfolds off. They saw a country in ruins. The people thought they had a perfect government, yet that government was destroyed from within. And so the people thought “Should I have kept the blindfold on and never have known the truth, or take it off and see the terrible reality?”

NYE Party Mia Vincenzi & Hannah LaMalfa

This year, Sacred Heart hosted a fun

New Year's Eve Party. There were lots of people and volunteers, as well as some church parishioners. There were lots of kids from Sacred Heart and even from other schools. There was a 50/50 raffle, which a couple of people won. At the party, there was a DJ who played really good music. As it came closer to midnight, we counted down to 1. At the strike of 12:00, everyone did a really big toast as everyone yelled “HAPPY NEW YEAR!”

Jaclyn, Nicole, and Alexa F. won the 8th Grade challenge of dressing up a classmate (Gianna) in toilet paper and accessories. It added extra humor since they dressed her up as Mr. Stamm!

We capped off the activities with a dance party while we waited for ice cream.
