Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian community, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to en-rich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

I will be taking a few days off, so there will not be daily Mass Tuesday through Friday this week. I will return by the end of the week. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, may we be mindful to indeed give thanks to God for the many gifts and blessings we have received. Every time we celebrate Mass we en-gage in an act of thanksgiving to God. May an atti-tude of thanksgiving permeate our lives so that all that we do and say and the very manner of our life is a thanksgiving to God. Enjoy the family, the meal, the football, and the nap, in whatever order you pre-fer. This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Jesus Christ the King. This is the last weekend of this li-turgical year. I hope it has been another year of grace and favor for you, which you will take into your Thanksgiving Celebration on Thursday. May the Lord continue to richly bless you. Next weekend we celebrate the First Sunday of Advent. —Father Bill Reynolds

Travel with Mary and Jo-seph as they search for a place to stay! Dress warmly for the journey! Bring the whole family for
a night of faith, fun and fellowship!
Advent gives us the time to reflect on our lives and
on our relationship with Jesus Christ, and provides us with
opportunities to make it better. We want the Christ child
to come into our lives so that we may experience the joy of
the Incarnation. In order to be better prepared for this
Christmas mystery, it is important to fully participate in the
season of Advent.
One way of preparing is to celebrate the “Las Posa-
das.” Based on the German play "Herbergsuchen," which
means "search for an inn," the "Las Posadas" (the inns) is
the Hispanic version of the play in which Mary and Joseph
search for an inn in Bethlehem. On Sunday evening, De-
cember 7th, Sacred Heart will present a "Las Posadas" be-
ginning at 4 p.m. A couple portraying Mary and Joseph
will lead those in attendance to various “homes” along the
way, seeking shelter for the night. On the journey, carols
are sung by those accompanying Mary and Joseph.
The more involved we become with the story of
the birth of Jesus, the better prepared we are for Christmas.
As the saying goes, “Jesus is the reason for the season!”
Giving becomes more fun and meaningful, when we re-
member that Christmas is about the special gift from God,
his only Son Jesus, born to free us from our sins.

Martyrs of Vietnam Through the missionary efforts of various religious families beginning in
the sixteenth century and continuing until 1866, the Vietnamese people
heard the message of the gospel, and many accepted it de-
spite persecution and even death. On June 19, 1988, Pope St. John Paul
II canonized 117 persons martyred in the eighteenth century, including St.
Andrew Dung Lac and his companions. Among these were ninety-six
Vietnamese, eleven missionaries born in Spain and belonging to the Order of Preachers, and ten French
missionaries belonging to the Paris Foreign Mission Society. Among these saints are eight Spanish and
French bishops, fifty priests (thirteen European and thirty-seven Vietnamese), and fifty-nine lay people.
These martyrs gave their lives not only for the Church but for their country as well. They showed that
they wanted the gospel of Christ to take root in their people and contribute to the good of their home-
land. St. Andrew, a priest, had suffered many tortures before being beheaded on December 21, 1839.
On June 1, 1989, these holy martyrs were inscribed in the liturgical calendar of the Universal Church on
November 24th.
Marriage Moments
"When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls." (Proverbs 31:10) Describe the value of your wife in poetic terms today. Go ahead try it! If you are the wife, try filling in the blank: When one finds a worthy husband, his value is far beyond _______.
Parenting Pointers (Thanksgiving is next week.) For most fami-lies Thanksgiving is a time to reconnect. It’s also a time when in-laws often mix. Your chil-dren benefit from a healthy extended family. Seek to know at least one extended family member better next Thanksgiving weekend. Don’t fight. Bite your tongue if you must. Can you find anything positive to say about a black sheep in your family? Do it for the sake of your child.

Students will take time to discuss what they are thankful for, and the SHARE staff would like to say thank you to Sacred Heart Church the staff and Father Reynolds for always being so supportive of SHARE Preschool. Staff members helped us out during trick or treating at our Halloween parties. They endured being “scared” by our tricks and rewarded us with treats. They let us take over and invade their work space on days we need to be up in the McCann Center moving around and gen-erally are a cheery face for SHARE stu-dents to see when arriving and leaving school each day. We feel safe, comfort-able and loved in our space and are very thankful for all of these blessings and more.

Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November
22/23, 2014
In today’s Gospel, Saint Matthew offers a compelling vision of
the end-time, when the people of all the nations are brought
before the Lord to give an account of their lives and actions.
Interestingly, the sheep, the righteous ones, are rewarded for
having acted with love and compassion without having recog-
nized the face of Christ in others. Good stewards recognize
those in need of their care as gifts from God. They know that
they are the instruments of Christ’s active, loving presence in
the world. How will we treat others this week: our family mem-
bers, neighbors, customers, strangers? What accounting will we
make to the Lord for their care?
“I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me to drink.” Is Christ calling you to serve Him in others as a sister, brother, or priest? Call Fr. Thom Hennen, diocesan vo-cations director at 563-324-1911, or write: HennenT@ diodav.org.

dear Padre Did Jesus exist before
his earthly birth? I want to know whether Jesus existed be-fore his earthly birth. I realize nothing is impossible with God, but this certainly adds to the mystery.
Jesus explains his rela-tionship with God the Father in John 14:10–11 when he asks Philip, “Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.” But how did Jesus exist before he was born of the Virgin Mary? Origen, one of the early Church Fathers said, That there was never a time when he did not exist is to be taken with a certain allowance. For these very words ‘when’ and ‘never’ are terms of temporal significance, while whatever is said of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, is to be understood as transcending all time, all ages, and all eternity” (The Fundamental Doctrines, 4:4:1). Jesus was physically born into this world and Jesus is fully human, but he is also fully divine. We cannot equate Jesus’ birth with our birth. Jesus transcends the limits of time and space. So how did Jesus exist before his birth? We cannot know. Is that part of the mystery? It most certainly is.

Rather ten or eighty years old these persons grew in spiritual maturity and learned to offer pains for the good of their soul and others. This is a good reference book before visiting an ill friend. November 23, 2014 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
Ez 34:11–12, 15–17 / 1 Cor 15:20–26, 28 / Mt 25:31–46
A little over a year ago, many people were eager to hear about the birth of the newest heir to the British throne, Prince George. What makes people so interested? Does the whole idea of royalty capture our imagination and give us a “fairy tale” moment—a chance to live in a simpler time (at least to our childhood selves)? Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. This story is emphati-cally not a fairy tale, and not like any king we’ve experienced or read about here on earth. This King comes as one who was obedient to his Father, even to death on a cross. This King comes, raised from the dead, to destroy death and put all things under his reign. This King also comes as a shepherd to gather his scattered sheep, bind their wounds, and give them pas-ture. And this King gathers the nations before him to judge not by how powerful they were, but how they cared for the least among them. On the last Sunday of the Church year, before we turn our faces again toward incarnation and birth, we remind ourselves that we are still on a journey with the King of kings and that he will come again. It’s part of the Eucharistic Prayer in the Acclamation of Faith at every liturgy: “We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again” [emphasis added]. Let us strive to be even more eager, more joyful, and more prepared for this King to come than we were for Prince George. Let us begin now to live into the new life he has given us.
