Congratulations to Rob Garber

Next Sunday morning, July 13, at the 10:30 Mass at St. Mary Church in Pella, Bishop Amos will admit to Candidacy a number of men from our diocese who are preparing for

ordination to the diaconate. Best wishes and God speed to Rob Garber who will be formally accepted by Bishop Amos as a candidate for Holy Orders, spe-cifically the Permanent Diaconate. Everyone is in-vited to attend, and Deacon Dan Goetz will officially represent Sacred Heart at this important celebration for Rob, his family, and for the Diocese of Daven-port. Continue to keep Rob in your prayers, as he has still has several hard years of preparation for sacred ordination.

This week we will be re-painting and re-carpeting the faith formation offices. Thus, there will be a bit of chaos in McCann Center this week.

Welcome to Dan Dorau Welcome to Sacred Heart to Dan Dorau, a seminarian for the Diocese of Davenport. He will be arriving on Thursday, July 10. He will reside at the rectory in Colfax, but will be at Sacred Heart most of the time, doing some job shadowing with Father Rey-nolds. If you wish to have him visit your home or come for a meal please feel free to invite him. Contact informa-tion will be provided later. His formation occurs at the seminary by those who have the proper training to do this and who have been entrusted with this responsibility by our bishop. He is here for exposure to ministerial ex-periences and to have a few opportunities to engage in ministry. He will be here until August 21, excepting time off and some events that the diocese requires him to at-tend elsewhere. He is currently in Israel at an archeologi-cal site, as part of his seminary training. No doubt he will have interesting stories to share from this experience. This is a brief biography provided by Dan:

Dan Dorau was born in Nebraska, was raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and has lived the past 24 years in Indi-ana before coming to the Davenport Diocese to study for the priesthood. He is in his 2nd year at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Wisconsin and hopes to be or-dained in 2017. Married for 23 years, Dan is the father of 4 children between the ages of 21 and 31. He received a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication from Loras College in Dubuque and a master’s degree in Information and Communication Science from Ball State University in Indiana. Before entering seminary, Dan worked 17 years as a Software Systems Analyst for a banking group in Indiana and before that was an insurance claims adjustor in Indiana and in West Des Moines. He has various inter-ests in addition to serving the people of God, including bicycling, travel, photography, gardening, computers, and socializing. Sacred Heart Parish will be his first pastoral assignment and Dan is very excited to meet everyone in the Newton area.

Orientation Meeting for Nursery Ministers

Nursery Coordinator, Jill Ergenbright is offer-ing discipleship opportunities. Anyone in our parish who is interested in serving in our nurs-ery, please attend the orientation meeting scheduled for Sunday, July 27th from 10:15 – 11:15 AM. Nursery ministers provide childcare for children ages 1 year to 4 years on Sundays during the 9:00 AM Mass and will be scheduled to serve about every eight to ten weeks. Adults serving as Nursery Ministers will be required to complete Protecting God’s Children Training and a background check. This particular minis-try is a great way for youth, 5th grade or older, to become introduced to serving and living as a disciple.

Bishop Amos has appointed Father Reynolds to serve as Dean of the Grinnell Deanery, following the retirement of Father Steve Ebel from Knoxville. This became ef-fective on July 1. A deanery is a geographical subdivision of a diocese. The Grinnell Deanery is comprised of the four counties of Marion, Mahaska, Poweshiek, and Jas-per, plus a small bit of western Iowa County. The Dean is to be a liaison between the Bishop, the Diocese, and the parishes and the clergy in the Deanery.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

One of the most well known and beloved passages in scripture is the gentle invitation of our Lord in today’s Gospel reading: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” When we need physical rest, we sleep or take a nap. When we need emotional rest, we sometimes take a vacation. But how do we find spiritual rest? How do we dis-cover Christ’s peace as we grapple with the complex issues of life deep in our hearts? Good stewards find their rest in the Lord. Reflect this week on what you do to welcome the peace of Christ into your heart.

Welcome to all 4th Degree & prospective 3rd Degree Members, spouses & families.

In The Catholic Messenger this week (July 3):

Update on the Supreme Court decision concerning the Health and Human Services Man-date.

Catholics in Action, 75 high school students and 19 adults, volunteered their labor for three days

to organizations and people in need in the Iowa City area this past week. Sisters representing half a dozen religious communities participated in the Congregation of the Humility of Mary’s June 28 celebration marking 150 years in the United States. A biotechnology company whose founder belongs to St. Mary’s, Iowa City, is working with a research insti-tute on personalized medical care and research for cancer patients. Parish leaders from across the Diocese of Davenport met to talk about what their parishes can do to bring people to Christ and engage uninvolved or marginalized parishioners. Opportunities for mentorship abound among adult and teen volunteers at Vacation Bible School programs throughout the diocese. Read what some say about the experience. The bishop of El Paso, Texas, says violence is the cause of the surge of immigrants, including young chil-dren, at the border with Mexico. Representatives of the world’s Catholic bishops are not expected to make any formal proposals about the Church’s pastoral care of families until after the 2015 synod. Irish government finalizes terms of inquiry into mother-baby homes Fr. Ron Rolheiser reflects on being perpetually distracted. Thank you for your support. Please let us know of any stories or suggestions you’d like to share with The Catholic Messenger!

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s column of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items in the library. There are many books written about for-giveness: how we offer it and how we receive it. The library has several on the subject but the latest one, Set Free: the Authentic Catholic Woman’s Guide to Forgiveness, by Gene-vieve Kineke, is one of the better to be pub-lished in a long time. Recognizing that the capacity to love is one of the most beautiful attribute of women, Kineke explains how this becomes a strength for women. It leads to peace as it teaches both the forgiver and the one being forgiven. Kineke says, “ Once women see the grace and freedom inherent in forgiveness, their natural response to in-jury gives way to the transforming power of God’s grace.”

Q u i n c e a ñ e r a (keen-seh-ah-NYAIR-ah) is Spanish for “fifteen-year-old girl.” It’s also the word used for the Latin American celebration of a girl’s entrance into young adulthood on her fifteenth birthday.

Some people compare it to an American Sweet 16 party, but because a religious ceremony is part of the celebration it’s actually more like a thir-teen-year-old girl’s bat mitzvah in the Jewish tradi-tion.

A quinceañera usually begins with a rite called the Order for the Blessing on the Fifteenth Birthday (Bendición al cumplir quince años), which can take place within or outside Mass. A party that resembles a wedding reception follows, so you make a good comparison when you say your friend seems to be planning a wedding. A quinceañera can also be like a wedding celebration in that some weddings get out of hand and become more of a production than a cele-bration of love.

That’s not to say that parties aren’t important. It’s important to celebrate a wedding and to celebrate it well. In the same way, it’s important in some cultures to celebrate a girl’s fifteenth birthday. Your friend wants to give thanks to God for the life of her daughter, and that surely is a wonder-ful thing to celebrate.

One day when my children were young, we went on a walk around the neighborhood. We encountered two girls who were about five and six years old. The elder child had her arm around the younger and was saying convincingly, “I’ll tell you how it goes. I’ll tell you what to do, and you do it.” The five-year-old, all eyes, nodded at the wisdom of these words. I smiled as I thought, “It would be nice if the world were so simple.”

Our readings today present the deceivingly simple solution to demands and temptations. It’s as though God is saying, “I will tell you how it goes.”

In the face of war and devastation, Zechariah shows us the God of peace, who rides a donkey but whose justice lasts forever.

In the face of hunger, anger, and oppression, the psalmist prays to God, who is slow to anger and abounds in mercy, who raises up the fallen and satisfies the desire of every living thing, and whose reign lasts forever.

In the face of death of body and spirit, Paul talks about the life that can be ours if we but open ourselves to the Spirit of God.

And Jesus—seeing that we are burdened by temptations, the expectations of others, and the laws that oppress rather than help us live—invites us to become like children, to take off the heavy yoke that binds and put on the yoke of Christ, a yoke that gives life.

Is he telling us what to do? Yes.

All that’s left is for us to do it. MARY KATHARINE DEELEY
