Lepidopterologica (SEL) invites all SEL-members and interested lepidopterists to attend the XVth European Congress of Lepidopterology to be held in Erkner/Berlin (Germany) from 8 to 12 September 2007.

Preliminary programme - The programme starts on 8 September at 9.00 a.m., and ends on 12
September at 6 p.m. It includes plenary lectures and parallel workshops on Butterflies, Noctuids, Geometrids, Pyralids and Microlepidoptera.
- On Saturday, 8 September, the "Annual meeting of the German Microlepidopterists" takes place in a parallel workshop.
- On Sunday, 9 September, there will be the symposium on "Biogeography and biodiversity of European Lepidoptera: usual and unusual patterns". Presentations and posters on this topic are welcome.
- A ship cruise to the historical centre of Berlin and a subsequent reception in the Dinosaur Hall of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin will be arranged on Monday, 10 September.
- SEL General Meeting is on Tuesday evening, 11 September.
Logistics The venue is the "Bildungszentrum Erkner" (= Education Centre) situated in
the middle of the small town of Erkner on the eastern outskirts of the City of Berlin. The site is easily accessible by public transport from Berlin by S-Bahn (Erkner is the final station) or by train. Delegates arriving by car can take the

Autobahn exit Erkner, 2 km east of Erkner and follow the signs in Erkner. Travel by car is recommended. Parking is free of charge.
The conference and accommodation will be at the same venue. The address of

The homepage of the venue, www.bz-erkner.com, provides additional
information including directions for travelling to the Bildungszentrum. The prices for accommodation and registration are indicated on the registration
form. 32 double-bed rooms are available. They are booked on the first come first served principle.
Most of the participants will arrive on Friday afternoon or in the evening. There will be no lunch in the Bildungszentrum, but the restaurant offers a small imbiss. Further restaurants are close to the venue.
An accompanying persons` programme will be organised to introduce participants to the historical and cultural sites in Berlin. The program will be organised on Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday. Each tour can be booked separately. The prices are not yet fixed and depend on levels of interest.
Abstracts of presentations
Abstracts contain the title, name(s) of author(s), address(es) and the text. Abstracts should be typed in English on a separate page, preferably in Word for Windows, using "Times New Roman" and 12 pt characters. The available space for a single abstract is approximately half an A4 page. Do not format the text except for authors' names (in CAPITALS) and genus- and species-group names (in italics). There will be no linguistic corrections. Pay attention to correct English. Please send the abstract as a word- or rtf- file by e-mail to [email protected]
Post-conference excursion
At present there are no plans for a post-congress excursion. Members are invited to express their interest. We are prepared to organise an excursion to places of lepidopterological interest, which are admittedly not very common in Brandenburg.

Call from the Treasurer The audited accounts for 2005 show a deficit of € 1,095.06. Subscription
defaulters are a serious problem for the Society! Membership fees may need to be increased in the foreseeable future unless defaulting subscriptions can be recovered.
Several Members were keen to find ways of assisting members in poor
countries and fortunately, several members of SEL pay the annual dues of other lepidopterists who can not afford a membership. However, we need more of these patrons. Your help is needed. Please contact the Treasurer. – For people who have economical difficulties in paying, Council will waive the subscription of a small proportion of members (1–2%) for 3 years per successful application. An announcement is made in this News p. 7 to communicate the application procedure to members.
Membership of IUCN. In view of the cost (the Treasurer has a bill for CHF
1,200) there was caution about the value to Council members. It was also felt that any representative might not easily represent all the views of the SEL membership. Rather, members felt that we might be better placed to advise on the species of Lepidoptera in need of protection. The President summarised that Council felt the cost of IUCN membership outweighed the benefits and we should not continue. The President will inform IUCN.

Report of the 3rd ALI-meeting at the State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe, Germany, 9th – 10th September, 2006
Association Lepidoptera Iranica (ALI, Angoman Parwaneh Schensi-je Iran) was founded in 2004 at the State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe (SMNK); for the founding concept see Carolinea 62 (2004): 203ff. The second meeting was organized by the Plant Pests and Diseases Research Institute (PPDRI; Tehran, Iran) from 28th–29th May, 2005. From September 9th–10th, 2006 the 3rd ALI-meeting took place at the SMNK. The lectures were presented in the small auditory of the Nymph-Garden-Pavilion of the Museum. All in all ALI consists of about 50 co-workers (November 2006), 27 of which participated in the symposium.
The meeting opened with a "Welcoming address" by the Director of the
SMNK presented by Dr. M. Verhaagh (Head of the Entomology Department on behalf of Professor Dr. V. Wirth) followed by the scientific programme. Engineer Reza Zahiri, Insect Taxonomy Research Department of the PPDRI gave a "Report of the 2nd ALI-meeting in Tehran" and spoke about main results and new suggestions. Dr. R. Trusch (Karlsruhe) introduced the history and current goals of the ALI project. A report "Mapping Iranian Zygaenidae (MIZ)" was given by Dr. Gerhard Tarmann (Innsbruck, Austria) who showed the state of the art of this model project of ALI. Mr. Alireza Naderi (Karaj, Iran) gave an introduction to the "Fauna of Butterflies of Iran" and its zoogeographical composition, and after Dr. Jörg-Uwe Meineke’s (Kippenheim, Germany) "Impressions of Iran 2006" the first day was closed with a congress dinner at the nearby restaurant "Kaiserhof".
On Sunday 10th September the workshops on Noctuoidea, Geometridae, and
Zygaenidae took place. Mr. Zahiri (together with his co-author Dr. V. V. Dubatolov, who could not take part personally) presented the current state of knowledge on the "Tiger moths of Iran" (Arctiidae) from the BioOffice database of the ALI project at PPDRI. Mr. Georg Petschenka (Hamburg, Germany) presented his talk "A taxonomic survey of the genus Gnophos TREITSCHKE, 1825 of Iran" (Geometridae). Reza Zahiri and Michael Fibiger (Sorø, Denmark) gave a BioOffice presentation of the "Iranian Noctuidae, Plusiinae", followed by Mr. Hossein Rajay (Tehran, Iran) who introduced his future PhD project under the headline "First steps in the project: Phylogenetic revision of the genus

Gnopharmia Studinger, 1892 with special focus on the life history (Geometridae)". Michael Fibiger and R. Zahiri reported the "Description of a new Amphipoea (Noctuidae, Xyleninae)" from NW Iran. Dr. Bernd Müller (Berlin, Germany) gave a lecture on "Geometridae collected in May in the Iranian part of the Kopet-Dagh Mts", and M. Fibiger & R. Zahiri presented the "Description of a new Gortyna (Noctuidae, Xyleninae) from Golestan forests and a new Luperina (Noctuidae, Xyleninae) from the Zagros Mountains". Finally Mr. Axel Hofmann (Breisach-Hochstetten, Germany) talked about "New data on the ecology and distribution on several high-mountain-species of Zygaenidae" in the MIZ framework (see above, G. Tarmann). The official meeting closed on Sunday and in the following days the Iranian colleagues worked in the natural history collections in Berlin, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, and Munich and visited the private collection of Dr. Wolfgang Eckweiler, Frankfurt/M.

At the end of the meeting there was a general agreement that in spite of all difficulties it is to the advantage of all entomologists that the joint ALI project will go on. Apart from endorsing the "Concept of ALI" all participants agreed to support the following goals: The ALI project can help Iranian colleagues to loan scientific material from European museums. Whenever ALI members come to Iran, they will supply identified specimens from earlier collecting trips for the Iranian reference collection at PPDRI. Whenever new taxa are described

specimens from the type-series will be deposited in the Insect Taxonomic Research Department (ITRD) of the PPDRI. As a general rule, all ALI members visiting Iran should come to the ITRD to look at the new or unidentified material of their groups of study and help the Iranian colleagues wherever possible. Therefore it is a valuable help for scientific visitors if unidentified material is pre-sorted in advance. European entomologists are interested in having the opportunity to collect in Iran, to study new and rare species, to produce inventory lists, to obtain new data on ecology, biology, etc. The Iranian colleagues support these activities on an administrative and logistic level. The successful meeting in Karlsruhe furthers hopes for the continuation of a great working relationship and the improvement of scientific progress.

Temporary membership dues exemption
According to a decision made by the SEL Council (October 2006) it will grant,
at its discretion, a very limited number of temporary dues exemptions to members in particularly difficult economic circumstances; the arrangement is primarily targeted at members in Eastern European countries where economies differ most markedly from the level prevalent in Western Europe.
Applications for membership dues exemption can be an informal and brief (½–
1 A4 page) outline of the member’s current situation and lepidopterological activities. It should reach the general secretary ([email protected]) no later than 15. January. Exemptions will be made on a 3-years basis, with a possibility for subsequent renewal.

The Zerynthia logo on your front page In 1975 I moved from Lebanon to London. My first book (Butterflies of
Lebanon, 1974) had just been published. I got involved in discussions on the creation of SEL. I remember being reactionary: I argued in favour of a special publication dealing with broader European subjects. It would be funded by existing entomological societies and distributed by them with their own journals to gain maximal readership. I lost that argument – probably rightly so. Its management complexities would have equalled those of the EU Commission!

In 1976, Otakar Kudrna came to stay with us for a few days in London. He was the designated editor for SEL. We discussed the name and the design of the SEL journal: Nota lepidopterologica had been mooted and we agreed it was fine. We looked for a butterfly or moth that might be suitable as a logo: the genus Zerynthia seemed appropriate. It was well-known, the two species are pretty, the genus is hardly found outside of Europe, and it lent itself well to being figured in black and white. Done! My wife Kiki—who died in 1989—agreed to draw the butterfly and to design the journal’s front page. Kiki’s original design survived till the present one was adopted in 1977. She would have been happy to see her butterfly living to see its 30th year.
Whenever I unwrap Nota, I still think her drawing captures the essence of
those most beautiful of European butterflies and provides a welcome sense of continuity. That I also feel a slight sentimental tug, not shared by other readers, is another matter.

Vorläufiges Programm - Das Programm beginnt am 8. September um 9.00 Uhr und endet am 12.
September 18.00. Es finden Plenarvorträge und parallele Workshops über "Tagfalter, Noctuiden, Geometriden, Pyraliden und Microlepidopteren" statt.
- Am Samstag, 8. September, wird in einem parallelen Workshop das diesjährige Treffen der Microlepidopterologen Deutschlands durchgeführt.
- Am Sonntag, 9. September, findet folgendes Symposium statt: Biogeographie und Biodiversität Europäischer Lepidoptera: gewöhnliche und ungewöhnliche Muster. Vorträge und Poster zu diesem Thema sind besonders willkommen.
- Schifffahrt von Erkner durch das historische Zentrum von Berlin und anschließender Empfang in der Dinosaurier Halle des Museums für Naturkunde am Montag, 10. September 2007.
- SEL Generalversammlung am Dienstagabend, 11. September.
Logistik Die Tagungsstätte ist das Bildungszentrum Erkner. Es liegt in der Mitte von

Das Begleitpersonenprogramm führt die Teilnehmer zu bekannten und weniger bekannten Sehenswürdigkeiten Berlins. Das Programm findet am Samstag, Sonntag und Dienstag statt und führt zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten Berlins. Jede Tour kann separat gebucht werden. Die Preise stehen noch nicht fest und hängen von den Anmeldungen ab.
Zusammenfassung der Vorträge
Die Zusammenfassung umfasst den Titel, Name(n) des Autors, Adresse und den Text. Zusammenfassung bitte in Englisch auf einer separaten Seite, vorzugsweise in Word für Windows, mit Schrifttyp "Times New Roman" und 12 pt Schriftgröße. Die Zusammenfassung sollte etwa eine halbe A4 Seite ausmachen. Bitte keine Formatierungen außer für Autorennamen (in KAPITÄLCHEN) und Gattungs- und Artnamen (kursiv). Post-Kongress Exkursion
Es gibt gegenwärtig keine festen Pläne für eine Exkursion. Die Mitglieder und Teilnehmer werden gebeten, ihr Interesse und eventuelle Wünsche zu bekunden. Wir sind bereit eine Exkursion zu lepidopterologisch interessanten Plätzen zu organisieren.

Aufruf des Schatzmeisters Die geprüften Konten für 2005 weisen ein Defizit von € 1.095,06 aus. Säumige
Beitragszahler sind ein ernsthaftes Problem für die Gesellschaft! Daher deutet sich an, dass die Mitgliedschaftsgebühren in absehbarer Zeit gesteigert werden müssten, falls die säumigen Beiträge nicht nachgezahlt werden.
Einige Mitglieder haben sich in der Vergangenheit dafür engagiert, Mitglieder
in ärmeren Ländern zu unterstützen. Erfreulicherweise gibt es auch aktuell eine Reihe von SEL-Mitgliedern, die eine Patenschaft für solche Lepidopterologen übernommen haben, die sich die Mitgliedschaft aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen nicht leisten können. Diese Patenschaften reichen aber leider noch nicht aus. Ich bitte Sie deshalb um ihre Mithilfe! – Für Personen, die wirtschaftliche Schwierigkeit haben, ihre Mitgliedsbeiträge aufzubringen, hat der Vorstand beschlossen, dass sich eine kleine Menge der Mitglieder (1–2%) um eine auf drei Jahre befristete kostenlose Mitgliedschaft bewerben kann. Eine Ausschreibung ist in diesen News auf Seite 12 gemacht, um den Mitgliedern das Bewerbungsverfahren zu mitzuteilen.
IUCN-Mitgliedschaft. Angesichts der Kosten (der Schatzmeister hat eine
Rechnung über CHF 1.200) gibt es Bedenken der Vorstandsmitglieder hinsichtlich des Gegenwertes für SEL. Der Vorstand hat auch die Auffassung, dass ein einzelner SEL-Vertreter bei IUCN die Ansichten unserer Mitgliedschaft gegenüber IUCN kaum darstellen kann. Besser wäre es hingegen, wenn die Gesellschaft auf breiter Front hinsichtlich des Schutzes von Lepidopterenarten beratend tätig würde. Der Präsident fasste zusammen, dass die Kosten der IUCN Mitgliedschaft den Nutzen überwiegen und wir die Mitgliedschaft daher nicht weiter fortsetzen sollten. Der Präsident wird IUCN informieren.

An alle SEL-Mitglieder mit Einzugsermächtigung Herzlichen Dank im Namen des Vorstandes unserer Gesellschaft allen, die sich
für diesen für SEL rationellsten Weg des Entrichtens ihrer Beiträge entschlossen haben! Die Mitgliedsbeiträge für 2007 werden, wie auch in den vergangenen Jahren, am 15. Februar von dem mit ihnen vereinbarten Konto abgebucht. Ich bitte alle „Abbucher“ ggf. um Nachricht, falls sich ihre Bankverbindung geändert haben sollte. Falsche Kontodaten verursachen SEL hohe Kosten, die ggf. an Sie weitergegeben werden müssten.
Der Mitgliedsbeitrag wird für alle Mitglieder zum 1. Januar jeden Jahres fällig.
Alle SEL-Mitglieder, die in Deutschland ein Girokonto besitzen, können dem Schatzmeister eine Einzugsermächtigung für ihren Mitgliedsbeitrag erteilen. Hierzu genügt das formlose Übermitteln der Kontodaten (Name des Kontoinhabers, Kontonummer, Bankleitzahl und Name des Kreditinstitutes) per E-Mail, Fax oder Brief an den Schatzmeister.

Zeitlich begrenzte Befreiung vom Mitgliedschaftsbeitrag
Entsprechend einer vom SEL-Vorstand (Oktober 2006) gemachten
Entscheidung kann sich eine sehr beschränkte Anzahl von Mitgliedern, die in besonders schwierigen ökonomischen Umständen leben, um eine zeitlich begrenzte Befreiung vom SEL-Mitgliedsbeitrag bewerben. Die Ausschreibung richtet sich in erster Linie an Mitglieder in Osteuropäischen Ländern, deren Ökonomie sich am deutlichsten vom Niveau in Westeuropa unterscheidet.
Der Antrag auf Befreiung von den SEL-Mitgliedschaftsgebühren sollte formlos
und kurz sein (1/2 bis 1 A4-Seite); er sollte die persönliche Situation des Mitglieds kurz umreißen und insbesondere seine lepidopterologischen Aktivitäten darstellen. Bericht über das 3. ALI-Meeting am Staatlichen Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe vom 9. – 10. September 2006
Association Lepidoptera Iranica (ALI, in Farsi: Angoman Parwaneh Schensi-je Iran) wurde 2004 am Staatlichen Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe (SMNK) gegründet; für das Gründungskonzept siehe Carolinea 62 (2004): 203ff. Das zweite Treffen wurde durch das Plant Pests and Diseases Research Institute (PPDRI) vom 28. bis 29. Mai 2005 in Teheran, Iran, organisiert. Vom 9. – 10. September 2006 fand nun das 3. ALI-Meeting am SMNK statt. Die Vorträge wurden im Kleinen Saal des Nymphengarten-Pavillons des Naturkundemuseums gehalten. Insgesamt besteht ALI aus 50 Mitarbeitern (November 2006), von denen 27 am Symposium teilnahmen.
Die Tagung wurde mit einem Grußwort des Direktors des SMNK eröffnet,
vorgetragen durch Dr. M. Verhaagh (Abteilungsleiter Entomologie in Vertretung von Prof. Dr. V. Wirth). Dem folgte das wissenschaftliche Programm. Ingenieur Reza Zahiri, Insect Taxonomy Research Department (ITRD) des PPDRI, gab einen Bericht vom zweiten ALI-Meeting in Teheran und sprach über wichtige Ergebnisse und neue Entwicklungen. Dr. R. Trusch (Karlsruhe) stellte kurz die bisherige Entwicklung des ALI Projektes vor und informierte über die gegenwärtigen Zielstellungen. Ein Bericht über das Projekt "Mapping Iranian Zygaenidae (MIZ)" wurde von Prof. Dr. Gerhard Tarmann (Innsbruck, Österreich) gegeben, er zeigte den gegenwärtigen Stand dieses Modellprojektes innerhalb ALI auf. Herr Alireza Naderi (Karaj, Iran) gab eine Einführung in die Tagfalterfauna Irans und ihre zoogeographische Zusammensetzung. Nach Dr. Jörg-Uwe Meinekes (Kippenheim, Deutschland) Lichtbildervortrag, der Eindrücke aus Iran von 2006 zeigte, beschloss das Kongress-Dinner im nahe gelegenen Restaurant "Kaiserhof" den ersten Tag.
Am Sonntag, den 10. September, fanden die Workshops über die Noctuoidea,
Geometridae und Zygaenidae statt. Herr Zahiri (zusammen mit seinem Koautor Dr. V. V. Dubatolov, der persönlich nicht anwesend sein konnte) präsentierte den gegenwärtigen Stand des Wissens über die iranischen Bärenspinner (Arctiidae) am PPDRI aus der BioOffice Arbeitsdatenbank heraus. Danach brachte Georg Petschenka (Hamburg) seinen Vortrag "A taxonomic survey of the genus Gnophos Treitschke, 1825 of Iran" (Geometridae), R. Zahiri und Dr. Michael Fibiger (Sorø, Dänmark) machten eine Präsentation über die iranischen Plusiinae (Noctudae),

wieder aus ihrer BioOffice Arbeitsdatenbank. Dem folgte ein Vortrag von Herrn Hossein Rajay (Tehran), er stellte sein zukünftiges Promotionsprojekt unter dem Titel "First steps in the project: Phylogenetic revision of the genus Gnopharmia Staudinger, 1892 with special focus on the life history (Geometridae)" vor. Michael Fibiger und R. Zahiri berichteten über die Beschreibung einer neuen Amphipoea (Noctuidae, Xyleninae) aus dem Nordwesten Irans, Dr. Bernd Müller (Berlin) hielt einen Vortrag über eine Sammelausbeute aus dem Iranischen Kopet-Dagh, die er im Mai 2005 dort sammelte. Danach stellten M. Fibiger und R. Zahiri eine neue Gortyna (Noctuidae, Xyleninae) aus den Wäldern des Golestan vor. Zum Abschluss sprach Axel Hofmann aus Breisach-Hochstetten (Deutschland) über neue Erkenntnisse zur Ökologie und Verbreitung von verschiedenen Hochgebirgs-Zygaenenarten, die im Rahmen des MIZ-Projektes (s.o. bei G. Tarmann) von ihm bearbeitet wurden. Das offizielle Tagungsprogramm endete am Sonntag Nachmittag. In den folgenden Tagen arbeiteten die iranischen Kollegen in den Naturkundemuseen in Berlin, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart und München. Darüber hinaus besuchten sie die Privatsammlung von Dr. Wolfgang Eckweiler in Frankfurt/Main.
Zum Ende des Treffens bestand die allgemeine Ansicht, dass es zum Vorteil
aller Entomologen ist, wenn das gemeinschaftliche ALI Projekt – trotz aller Schwierigkeiten – weitergeht. Neben der Anerkennung der im Konzept von ALI festgeschriebenen Punkte stimmten alle Teilnehmer darin überein, die folgenden Ziele besonders zu unterstützen: Das ALI Projekt soll den iranischen Kollegen dabei helfen, wissenschaftliches Material aus Europäischen Instituten auszuleihen. ALI-Mitarbeiter, die in den Iran reisen, sollen determinierte Vergleichsexemplare aus ihren früheren Aufsammlungen zum Verbleib in der Sammlung des PPDRI mitbringen. Immer wenn neue Taxa beschrieben werden, sollen Exemplare der Typenserien in der Sammlung am ITRD des PPDRI hinterlegt werden. Generell sollten alle ALI-Mitarbeiter, die in den Iran reisen, das ITRD besuchen um nach neuem oder unbestimmtem Material ihrer Gruppen zu schauen und den Iranischen Kollegen bei der Bearbeitung dieser Exemplare möglichst zu helfen. Hierfür ist es eine wertvolle Hilfe für die wissenschaftlichen Besucher, wenn dieses unbestimmte Material vorsortiert vorliegt. Die europäischen Entomologen sind daran interessiert, im Iran zu sammeln, neue oder seltene Arten zu untersuchen, Inventarlisten herzustellen, neue Daten über Biologie und Ökologie zu gewinnen usw. Die iranischen Kollegen unterstützen diese Aktivitäten auf Verwaltungs- und logistischer Ebene. Die erfolgreiche Tagung in Karlsruhe gibt begründete Hoffnung auf die weitere Fortsetzung der guten Arbeitsbeziehungen und die weitere Verbesserung des wissenschaftlichen Fortschritts (siehe Photo S. 6).

- La rencontre annuelle des microlépidoptéristes allemands aura lieu le samedi 8 septembre en tant que symposium parallèle.
- Le dimanche 9 septembre, il y aura un symposium intitulé : Biogéographie et biodiversité des Lépidoptères européens : modèles courants et peu courants. Vous êtes invités à soumettre vos contributions à ce sujet sous forme de conférences ou de posters.
- Le lundi 10 septembre, il y aura une croisière en bateau jusqu’au centre historique de Berlin suivie d’une réception dans le hall aux dinosaures du Museum für Naturkunde Berlin.
- L’Assemblée générale de la SEL se tiendra le soir du mardi, 11 septembre.

Logistique Le congrès aura lieu au « Bildungszentrum Erkner », un centre éducatif situé
au milieu de la petite ville d’Erkner, dans les faubourgs à l’est de la ville de Berlin. Le site est facile d’accès en transport en commun depuis Berlin par le S-Bahn, pour lequel Erkner est le dernier arrêt, ou en train. Ceux qui viendront en voiture, ce qui sera plus facile, devront prendre la sortie Erkner de l’Autobahn, 2 km à l’est d’Erkner, et suivre les indications dans Erkner. Le parking est gratuit.

Appel du trésorier La vérification de nos comptes pour 2005 a mis à jour un déficit de 1 095,06
Euros. Les personnes qui ne paient pas leurs cotisations engendrent donc un problème sérieux pour notre Société. A tel point qu’une augmentation des cotisations pourrait être envisagée dans un avenir proche.
Plusieurs de nos généreux membres en aident d’autres moins fortunés et
certains paient les cotisations annuelles de ceux qui ne peuvent pas se le permettre. Toutefois, plusieurs membres moins fortunés n’ont pas encore l’aide qu’il leur faudrait pour rester membres de SEL. Votre aide est donc sollicitée ! Veuillez S.V.P. contacter le trésorier à ce sujet. – Pour les membres ayant des difficultés économiques, le Conseil a décidé de renoncer à percevoir la cotisation d’une faible proportion d’entre-eux (1–2%) pour trois ans pour chaque application acceptée. La manière de présenter une application est expliquée à la page 18 de ce Bulletin.
Au sujet de notre adhésion à l’UICN. Étant donné les coûts de cette adhésion
(notre trésorier a reçu une facture de 1 200 CHF), les membres du Conseil se sont demandés si elle valait vraiment la peine. Ils ont aussi remarqué que le représentant peut facilement ne pas représenter toutes les opinions des membres de la Société . Et que nous serions peut-être mieux placés pour donner notre avis concernant les espèces devant être protégées. Le Conseil est donc d’avis que l’adhésion à l’UICN nous coûte trop cher pour ce qu’elle nous rapporte et notre Président va en informer l’IUCN.

Exemptions temporaires des frais de cotisation Suite à une décision du Conseil de SEL en octobre 2006, celui-ci donnera un
nombre très limité d'exemptions temporaires de frais de cotisation aux membres de la SEL soumis à des difficultés économiques importantes. Cette disposition vise particulièrement les membres d'Europe de l'Est où les conditions économiques diffèrent le plus par rapport au niveau qui prévaut en Europe de l'Ouest.
Les applications d'exemption de frais d'adhésion peuvent prendre la forme d'un
informel et bref (1/2 – 1 page A4) résumé de la situation de la personne et de ses activités lépidoptérologiques. Elles devront parvenir chez notre Secrétaire ([email protected]) avant le 15 janvier. Les exemptions seront valides pour trois ans, avec possibilité de renouvellement.

Rapport de la 3e rencontre d'ALI au Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Karlsruhe, Allemagne, les 9 et 10 septembre 2006
L'Association Lepidoptera Iranica (ALI, Angoman Parwaneh Schensi-je Iran) a été fondée en 2004 au Muséum d'histoire naturelle d'état de Karlsruhe (SMNK). Pour en savoir plus au sujet de la fondation, on peut consulter Carolinea 62 (2004: 203ff). La 2e rencontre a été organisée par le « Plant Pests and Diseases Research Institute » (PPDRI; Téhéran, Iran) les 28 et 29 mai 2005. La 3e rencontre a donc eu lieu à Karlsruhe les 9 et 10 septembre 2006. Les conférences ont été présentées dans le petit auditorium du pavillon "Nymph-Garden" du Muséum. ALI est constituée de 49 collaborateurs en date du mois de septembre 2006 et 27 d'entre eux ont participé à la 3e rencontre.
La rencontre a commencé par le mot de bienvenue du Directeur du SMNK, le
Professeur Dr. V. Wirth, présenté par le Dr. M. Verhaagh, Chef du Département d'entomologie, en l'absence du Directeur. Le programme scientifique a suivi. L'ingénieur Reza Zahiri du Département de recherche sur la taxonomie des insectes du PPDRI a présenté un rapport concernant la 2e rencontre d'ALI, ses principaux résultats et de nouvelles suggestions. Le Dr. R. Trusch (Karlsruhe) a parlé de l'historique et des buts actuels d'ALI. Les derniers résultats concernant le projet modèle « Mapping Iranian Zygaenidae (MIZ) » ont été présentés par le Dr. Gerhard Tarmann (Innsbruck, Autriche). Ensuite, M. Alireza Naderi (Karaj, Iran) a présenté une introduction au projet sur la Faune des rhopalocères d'Iran et sa composition zoogéographique. Enfin, après les « Impressions de l'Iran en 2006 » du Dr. Jörg-Uwe Meineke, la première journée s'est terminée par un souper commun au restaurant Kaiserhof.
La journée du dimanche 10 septembre donnait la parole aux spécialistes des
Noctuoidea, des Geometridae et des Zygaenidae. M. Zahiri (et son co-présentateur, le Dr. V. V. Dubatolov, qui n'était pas présent) ont présenté l'état de leurs connaissances sur les Arctiidae d'Iran contenues dans la banque de données BioOffice d'ALI au PPDRI. La conférence de M. Georg Petschenka (Hambourg, Allemagne) sur le genre Gnophos (Geometridae) en Iran a suivi. Reza Zahiri et le Dr. Michael Fibiger (Sorø, Danemark) ont ensuite donné leur présentation BioOffice sur les Plusiinae (Noctuidae) iraniens. Ils ont été suivis par M. Hossein Rajay de Téhéran qui a donné un aperçu de son projet doctoral intitulé « Révision

phylogénétique du genre Gnopharmia Staudinger, 1892 (Geometridae) avec emphase sur son histoire naturelle ». Michael Fibiger et R. Zahiri ont alors rapporté leurs descriptions d'une nouvelle Amphipoea du nord-ouest de l'Iran, d'une nouvelle Gortyna des forêts de Golestan et d'une nouvelle Luperina des Monts Zagros (Noctuidae, Xyleninae). Le Dr. Bernd Müller (Berlin, Allemagne) a présenté un exposé intitulé « Geometridae récoltés en mai dans la partie iranienne des Monts Kopet-Dagh ». Enfin, M. Axel Hofmann (Breisach-Hochstetten, Allemagne) a parlé de l'écologie et de la répartition de plusieurs espèces de Zygaenidae de hautes montagnes dans le cadre du projet MIZ (voir ci-dessus, G. Tarmann). Les présentations se sont donc terminées ce dimanche. Dans les jours qui ont suivi, les collègues iraniens ont pu travailler à loisir dans les collections des musées de Berlin, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart et Munich de même que chez le Dr. Wolfgang Eckweiler de Francfort -sur-le-Main.
À la fin de la rencontre, les participants étaient d'avis que la continuité des
projets conjoints d'ALI étaient à l'avantage de tous les entomologistes, malgré les difficultés. En plus d'appuyer le concept d'ALI, les participants se sont entendus pour soutenir les buts suivants : ALI peut aider les collègues iraniens dans leurs demandes d'emprunt de matériel de musées européens. Lors de leurs visites en Iran, les membres d'ALI retourneront du matériel identifié récolté lors d'expéditions antérieures afin qu'il enrichisse la collection de référence du PPDRI. Lors de la description de nouveaux taxons, des spécimens de la série-type seront déposés dans la collection du Département de recherche sur la taxonomie des insectes (DRTI) du PPDRI. En règle générale, tous les membres d'ALI en visite en Iran devraient aller au DRTI pour consulter le matériel nouvellement récolté ou indéterminé dans leurs groupes d'intérêt et aider les collègues iraniens autant que possible. Si le matériel est trié d'avance, les visiteurs apprécieront cette aide précieuse. Les entomologistes européens s’intéressent aux possibilités de récolter en Iran, d'étudier des espèces rares ou nouvelles, de dresser des inventaires et d'obtenir des données inédites d'histoire naturelle, etc. Les collègues iraniens appuient ces activités administrativement et logistiquement. Le succès de la rencontre de Karlsruhe permet d'envisager avec espoir la continuité d’une excellente collaboration au bénéfice de la science (voir photo p. 6).
