General Comments:  You are doing amazing learning from home Kindergarten friends! We loved seeing your ideas for the Invisible String activity and what & who you are connected to.  Rideau Weekly Announcement: Every Wednesday, Rideau Park School has a weekly announcement. Check it out to hear about what is happening in our school community and for student shout outs (each student will be mentioned between May 6 - June 24). Find them on Twitter @RIDparkschool or on the RPS YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAJ9QLcfk1ndovUwODikVAQ  Rideau Rainbow Challenge! The windows at Rideau Park are looking a bit lonely, and are in need of some rainbow artwork! Our school is looking for students to construct a rainbow that can be posted in our front windows. You can draw, paint, colour, use cut up paper- use your creativity to make the rainbow however you would like. You are the artist! There is a Rainbow box on the front steps of our school to collect your rainbows. We can’t wait to see your beautiful artwork in our windows!   Daily Fine Motor Warm-Ups:

1. Practice printing your name using an uppercase letter for the first letter and lowercase letters for the rest (if you can already do this practice printing your first AND last name).

2. Practice zipping or buttoning up a coat/ jacket/sweater– try three times by yourself before asking for help.

3. Learn how to tie your shoelaces.   __________________________________________________________________  Demonstration of Learning Please upload documentation of your child’s completed work to myBlueprint for the Nighttime at the Zoo and Zoo Animal Nature Art.

Activity/Task #1: Google Meet with Teachers (small groups)   Description of Activity or Task: In small groups, you will have a 15-minute time slot to video chat with the teachers and other classmates on Google Meet. Please see above for Google Meet groups and time slots.    We will be learning how to print the letter Zz, making the letter Z sound and reading our popcorn word, “zoo”. Please come prepared with a letter Z object and your idea to the questions, What

is your favourite animal in the zoo? Why is it your favourite zoo animal?  Estimate of Time Required: 15 minutes  Resources: Google Meet, Laptop/computer or iPad/tablet

Activity/Task #2: Zigzag

Description of Activity or Task:  Z is for Zigzag. Draw four zigzag lines on a piece of paper with a crayon or marker. Use a pair of scissors to cut along your zigzag lines.   Here are a few tips to remember when you are cutting with scissors:

● point your scissors away from your body ● hold them “thumbs up alligator” ● follow the line as your cut ● use your helper hand to turn the paper as your cut (don’t turn

your hand)  Estimate of Time Required: 5 - 10 minutes  Resources: crayon or marker, paper, scissors

Activity/Task #3: Nighttime at the Zoo

Description of Activity or Task:  It’s nighttime at the Calgary Zoo, but not all animals are sleeping! Some animals are nocturnal, which means that they sleep during the day, and are awake during night. Some nocturnal animals sleep during the day because it’s very hot during the day, or they are trying to escape predators (other animals trying to eat them). Click here for a fun Nocturnal Animal Song!

Page 5: RPS K E.F.school.cbe.ab.ca/school/rideaupark/teaching... · A c t i vi t y/ T a s k #3: N i g ht t i m e a t t he Zo o D e s c r i p t i o n o f A c t i vi t y o r T a s k: It’s

Nocturnal animals usually have big eyes and great eyesight. Do you know of any animals that are nocturnal? Look at the list below for some nocturnal animals.

During the winter, we created a hibernation scene and learned that z is the sleeping letter. Drawing “zzz” above an animal with its eyes closed tells the reader that the animal is sleeping.   On a blank sheet of paper, solve this math problem:  It is nighttime at the Calgary Zoo and there are 10 different animals. Some of them are sleeping, and some of them are awake because they are nocturnal. How many animals are sleeping? How many animals are awake? You must have at least 2 different animals. (ex. 3

sleeping bears and 7 nocturnal spiders or 5 sleeping lions and 5 nocturnal skunks).   Draw your ideas and print the numbers for how many animals are sleeping and how many animals are awake. Remember to draw the sleeping letter z for the animals that are sleeping! (This is our letter Z printing practice today).

   For an extra challenge:

1. Write the addition sentence to go with your picture. (5 sleeping bears and 5 nocturnal spiders: 5 + 5 = 10).

2. Write the names of the animals on your picture.   Estimate of Time Required: 30 - 40 minutes, broken into manageable time chunks.  Resources: paper, pencil, colouring tools optional __________________________________________________________________

Activity/Task #1: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

Description of Activity or Task: Warm up with this fun song that goes along with the book, “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” by Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault.  Estimate of Time Required: 5 minutes  Resources: https://youtu.be/Y3qTeyZxrJA

Activity/Task #2: Z is for Zebra

Description of Activity or Task:  Z is for Zebra. Are zebras black with white stripes or white with black stripes? Why do zebras have stripes? Make a prediction to these wonderings and then watch the two videos below. Draw a picture of a zebra and label it with a few of the facts you learned about them. (I used Art Hub for Kids to help me draw my zebra).

Page 9: RPS K E.F.school.cbe.ab.ca/school/rideaupark/teaching... · A c t i vi t y/ T a s k #3: N i g ht t i m e a t t he Zo o D e s c r i p t i o n o f A c t i vi t y o r T a s k: It’s

Parents: Help your child hear the sounds by stretching the word out (like an elastic band). Encourage your child to print the word on their own using “kid writing”. Your child should be able to identify the beginning sound in the word. With support, they should be able to hear multiple sounds. Kid writing is an important first step in becoming a writer. It doesn't matter if the letters are all correct or not or if it's only one letter. What is important is that they are making a connection between letters and sounds and trying to write what they hear. We are writers!    Video #1: San Diego Zoo Kids - Zebras

Video #2: SciShow Kids - Why Do Zebras Have Stripes?  Estimate of Time Required: 20 - 30 minutes  Resources: https://kids.sandiegozoo.org/videos/zebra-kid-video https://youtu.be/GhfBOyPQqX0

Activity/Task #3: Alphabet Chutes & Ladders

Description of Activity or Task:  Play a literacy version of one of our favourite games in Kindergarten. Roll a die and move your marker. When you land on a space say the name of the letter, the sound it makes and a word that begins with that sound. If you land on a space with a green chute, slide your marker down. If you land on a space with a ladder, climb up. Have fun playing!  Challenge: To complete your turn, say the number of words equal to the number on your dice. For example: I roll a 4 and land on the letter S space. I would say 4 words that begin with letter S.  Estimate of Time Required: 15 minutes  Resources: Alphabet Chutes & Ladders (print off the PDF that is on our website or make your own game board), game markers, dice

Activity/Task #4: Guess and Check Math Game

Description of Activity or Task:  To play this game, you will need 2 dice, 10 small objects, and a partner. If you don’t have dice, you can create “dice cards”:

Page 11: RPS K E.F.school.cbe.ab.ca/school/rideaupark/teaching... · A c t i vi t y/ T a s k #3: N i g ht t i m e a t t he Zo o D e s c r i p t i o n o f A c t i vi t y o r T a s k: It’s

1. Partner A rolls the dice, or sets out a dice card. Set out the same number of objects that you see on the dice. (roll a 5, set aside 5 coins).

2. Partner B closes his/her eyes. Partner A covers up part of the objects. (puts hand over 2 of the objects).

3. Partner B opens his/her eyes and guesses how many objects Partner A is covering up.

4. Take turns being Partner A and B. To increase the challenge, roll both dice, or make 2 sets of dice cards.

The strategy that we used in our Kindergarten classroom is to count on. When guessing the number of hidden objects, Partner B could count the number of visible objects, and continue counting on his/her fingers until he/she matches the number on the dice. The number on his/her fingers will be the number of hidden objects.  This can be a challenging activity for children so it’s important to stay

positive when your child gives an incorrect answer. Answers are clues to what children understand, and where they might need support. Move the objects around to match the formation of the dots on the dice so your child can see what is shown, and count on to see what is missing. Encourage the use of fingers! Start with low numbers and move higher as your child is ready.  Estimate of Time Required: 20 minutes  Resources: Dice or paper with dots drawn on to look like dice, 10 small objects (pebbles, bottle caps, gems), number line (optional) __________________________________________________________________

Activity/Task #1: Zoo Home Safari

Description of Activity or Task:  Go on a Zoo Safari right from your home! Choose one of the animals highlighted at the Cincinnati Zoo that you would like to learn about. Watch the video the whole way through. When the video is finished, draw a picture of the animal in its enclosure/zoo habitat/where you saw it in the video.  We know enough popcorn words to make a popcorn sentence! Copy this sentence and fill in the blank with the name of the animal you learned about for the Zoo Home Safari.

A ____________ is in the zoo.  Mrs. Prangnell chose to learn about Rico the Brazilian Porcupine.

Activity/Task #1: Paper Line Sculpture

Description of Activity or Task:  Listen to the story, “Lines That Wiggle” by Candace Whitman. What different kinds of lines did you see in the book? What did some of the lines turn into?    Look at the painting below by Vincent van Gogh called, “The Olive Trees”. What lines do you notice in his painting?

Page 17: RPS K E.F.school.cbe.ab.ca/school/rideaupark/teaching... · A c t i vi t y/ T a s k #3: N i g ht t i m e a t t he Zo o D e s c r i p t i o n o f A c t i vi t y o r T a s k: It’s

Now, create your own line-inspired art. Use a piece of construction paper or cardstock as the base. Cut out strips of construction or coloured paper. Bend, twist, curl, fold and make zigzags with your paper strips. Next, glue each paper strip onto your base so the papers stick up. Watch as you create a 3D sculpture where your lines jump off the page!

Estimate of Time Required: 20 minutes  Resources: coloured or construction paper, scissors, glue, https://youtu.be/a1I03hHWGhM

Activity/Task #2: Virtual Field Trip to a Firehall

Description of Activity or Task:  Let’s go on a Virtual Field Trip! The City of North Vancouver’s fire department welcomes you into one of their fire halls. See inside the fire trucks, check out the crew’s gear and learn what firefighters wear to stay safe when responding to a possible coronavirus-related call. After the virtual field trip talk to your child about what they learned and discuss any questions they have about these important community helpers.  Estimate of Time Required: 10 minutes  Resources: https://youtu.be/5NuXazLnYaE

Activity/Task #3: One More, One Less

Description of Activity or Task:  This is a game to play with an adult or older sibling! You can take turns being the “caller” or the “jumper”. To start, the child should be the jumper.

Page 19: RPS K E.F.school.cbe.ab.ca/school/rideaupark/teaching... · A c t i vi t y/ T a s k #3: N i g ht t i m e a t t he Zo o D e s c r i p t i o n o f A c t i vi t y o r T a s k: It’s

● Using sticky notes or pieces of paper, we are going to create a number line. Write down the numbers from 1-10, with one number on each paper.

● Lay the numbers out on the floor in a straight or curved line.  ● To start, the jumper stands on any number. The caller calls out

“one more” or “one less”.  ○ When the caller says “one more”, the jumper jumps up the

number line to the next number (ie. 5 to 6, or 8 to 9).  ○ When the caller says “one less”, the jumper jumps down

the number line to the next lowest number (ie. 4 to 3, or 9 to 8).

For an extra challenge, call out “two more” or “three more” and jump two or three spots up the number line.   Estimate of Time Required: 10 - 15 minutes  Resources: paper, writing tool __________________________________________________________________
