After School Building Hours:

In order to improve safety within our school and confines of Community Education Supervisory roles, we have two minor changes to communicate to parents and students about after school time at RHS: All students staying after school must be in the commons in plain sight of the Community Ed Supervisor (not under the stairs) unless they are with an adult in a classroom or other space with permission.

All students not with an adult or in a school activity must be out of the building by 5:00pm.

What we need: RHS is holding a Lego toy drive to collect used Legos for Rogers and Hassan Elementary Schools to use as part of their Lego robotics and design programs. Take this opportunity to get some perhaps little-used toys out of the way and donate them toward the education of younger students in the district! What we are looking for: Any used standard-size (not larger Duplo-style) Lego bricks and/or special pieces, in any usable condition. They will be cleaned and sanitized before being delivered to the elementary school. .

What to do: Just send them in with

students to the RHS main office collection

point. We hope to

see lots of bags,

boxes, and baskets

of old Legos.

Students donating

will get a small

treat!

Teacher Workshop

Chemical Health We recently had a K-9 sniff at RHS. While we are glad to report the reports of contraband were very low for a building of 1600, we would be remiss as educators not to remind parents and students of the importance of being knowledgeable about teenage chemical health. Please have conversations about drugs and alcohol with your teen.

For tips on how to have conversations, please click on the Chemical Health Resource Guide.

Thursday, March 2nd, 2017 from 6-8pm. Ten metro area schools participated in this year’s high school art exhibition.

Minnesota Career Information System

RHS has a new tool to help students explore college and career options.

The Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS) is an Internet-based system that combines a wealth of career, educational and labor market information into one com-prehensive, easy-to-use exploration tool. With MCIS, stu-dents and clients can:

Learn about over 520 occupations Develop a personal portfolio and personal learning

plan Research colleges, universities and career schools Find scholarships and financial aid Improve job search skills and create a resume Students set up accounts and took an interst inventory on 2/17. The website is https://mncis.intocareers.org. A link to the website and log in information is posted under the “RHS Counseling and Guidance” course on Schoology. This is a great resource to explore college and career possibili-ties with your student. Please contact Jacy Shrestha, Coun-selor and College and Career Specialist, with any questions.

Rogers High School DECA students hosted a Youth Holiday Workshop on December 21 for children ages 3-12.

Snacks, drinks, and holiday music were provided for all of the guests. Kids, parents and volunteers enjoyed fun-filled

Holiday activities and stations, such as:

Ornament Making: Rudolph and popsicle stick ornaments were made

Paper Crafts: Children made wreaths, Christmas trees, and thumbprint reindeer

Winter Wonderland: One of the favorites! Kids created individually designed snowflakes out of paper or

popsicle sticks.

Santa Claus: Santa Claus made an appearance at this holiday event! A layout was designed by the DECA

students to create the perfect picture for the kids. A Polaroid camera was used to take pictures on Santa’s lap

along with elf kisses, a personalized note, and supplies to create their very own picture frame.

Holiday Cookie Decorating: This was the kids’ favorite station

Mrs. Clause’s Hot Cocoa Toss: Throw Jumbo Marshmallows into tree shaped cups and receive a prize.

Hula Hoop: Hula Hoops were provided for the kids to have contests and play around.

With the help of the 20 DECA student volunteers, 35 guests, and generous donations, the Youth Holiday Workshop

raised $290 plus additional gifts. This was a successful night, thanks to the help of the Rogers community and the

excitement of the kids. The funds were split between Hope 4 Youth and B.I.G’s Go Fund Me page.

DECA students donated $145 worth of supplies to Hope 4 Youth, including 50 personal

hygiene items, 50 food items, 20 pairs of socks, and an extra $38. These items are stored and

given to the homeless children and teens that attend the Hope 4 Youth facility. Hope 4 Youth

provides part time shelter, meals, and clothes to these teens that do not have anywhere to go.

They appreciate all that Rogers High School has done for them in the past and will continue to

provide in the future.

Junior Meeting Juniors and their parents are encouraged to attend an information panel on Thursday, March 2, from 5:30-6:30 pm in the Media Center. Representatives from different types of colleges including state, private, technical and community colleges, support services, and apprenticeship programs will be at RHS to present information and answer questions

Job Shadowing On March 17th, all juniors will be required to participate in a job shadowing opportunity. Students will not be expected to attend school on this day. They will report directly to their job shadowing experience that morning. The time commitment for this experience is at least 6 hours. Students will be required to set up their own experience. They need to make contact with someone in a field of their choosing, preferably in a field they are interested in learning more about (we prefer they do not shadow their parents). One of our building goals at RHS is for our students to be career/college ready. Please make sure you and your student take advantage of this opportunity. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your student’s counselor.

MCA Testing In April

The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) and alternate assess-

ment, Minnesota Test of Academic Skills (MTAS), are the statewide tests

that help districts measure student progress toward Minnesota's academic

standards and meet the requirements of the Elementary and Secondary

Education Act (ESEA). The tests are administered every year to measure

student performance relative to the Minnesota Academic Standards that

specify what students in a particular grade should know and be able to do.

Each student receives a score that falls in one of four achievement lev-

els: Does Not Meet the Standards, Partially Meets the Standards, Meets the

Standards and Exceeds the Standards

The testing schedule is as follows:

MCA Reading (10th Grade): April 3-5 - Most Sophomores will test in their

assigned English class.

MCA Math (11th Grade): April 3-5 - Most Juniors will test in their as-

signed Math class

MCA Science: April 27-18 - Students who have BIology or AP Biology will test in their Biology class

AttendanceWorks Tips

What can you do?

Don’t let your child stay home unless truly sick. Complaints of headaches or stomach aches may be signs of anxiety.

Talk to teachers if you notice sudden changes in behavior. These could be tied to something going on at school.

Did you know?

Missing 10 percent, or about 18 days, of the school year can drastically affect a students academic success.

A B.I.G. ROYAL FAMILY After the tragic accident involving three of members

of our ROYAL FAMILY (Gretta Jensen, Beckett Olson and Ian Orina), members in our ROGERS DECA Chapter needed to do something to help and support the three students and their families.

Our plan was to raise money and quickly so we could offer immediate help. We ordered over 500 bracelets to sell to the community, administration, and students. It was a given to help out these students and families involved. As our Principal Mr. Paurus said, “In times like these, it is important to come together, lean on one another and show care and concern for one another”.

RHS DECA raised approximately $1,000 for each family. We plan to keep giving and supporting them along this journey.

NHS Blanket Drive

National Honor Society did a tie blanket drive for the Masonic Children's Hospital at the University of Minnesota. Students worked in groups to

make the tie blankets and we ended up with 41

blankets that will be donated in March.

Math League Advisor Gina Lammers giving Jacob Pawlowski his award for being the top scorer of RHS's first math league season! Congratulations, Jacob, and all of our Math League participants! Thanks for a great first season!
