GOALS Fundraising goal $55 raised per Rotarian Advocacy contact all levels of politicians locally Rotary/polio link keep telling the Rotary Polio Story Rotary made a promise in 1985 to free the world of the life threatening and disabling poliovirus. In the words of Rotarian and polio survivor Carl Chinnery “Our mission is clear, eradicate polio”. The ideas that we will be promoting for clubs to consider getting involved with in 2019/20 are set out below. They are designed to meet one or more of the goals above and to involve and inspire all Rotarians and our local communities. Involve everyone in your club and district including youth, community, international, membership and public image. Consider working with other Rotary clubs in your local area. A lot of clubs are already maximising the opportunities from using the Rotary Polio Story to attract interest from potential new Rotarians and supporters including companies as well as re-energising their own club members. Think out of the box on who you can involve and how you can excite them to play their part in making history. Electronic materials for all of these initiatives will be created for your use and where hard copies are needed suitable files will be available for you to get printed locally. Purple4Polio - Registering of all polio activities and Map - Working with the Purple4Polio theme in these and any other polio activities clubs undertake helps widen the exposure consistently across all media. Purple Crocus Corms a. The 18/19 and 19/20 Teams need to work together to ensure orders are placed as soon as possible for planting activities in Autumn 2019 b. Expand who you work with such as schools, gardening groups, community clubs etc. by also engaging with local parks, gardens, National Trust properties, country estates, visitor attractions, arboretums, garden centres and similar to explore how they can get involved c. When the crocus bloom each Spring promote the Rotary Polio Story and Rotary generally with signage, media releases and activities 2. Pandemic Conference a. Around World Polio Day 24th October a new opportunity will be launched with a ‘Pandemic’ Conference aimed at secondary school age participants taking place in Cardiff. As part of the day the Rotary Polio Story will be brought to life and a call to action given to the attendees. The main focus of the Conference will be about pandemic outbreaks generally. This will be a fun and interactive day with many learning outcomes meeting curriculum requirements b. There will be several Regional ‘Pandemic’ Conferences later in 19/20 Rotary year c. In the plans for 20/21 the content of these Conferences will be broadened to cover preventable health matters where Rotary can make a difference in our communities. Materials will be available in 20/21 for clubs / groups of clubs to organise Conferences in your local communities 3. Purple4Polio Lighting and Crocus Corm planting World Polio Day 24th Oct 2019 a. g. Announce your ‘Get Moving to End Polio’ plans (see Item 4)

4. Get Moving to End Polio a. Sponsored activity linked to the length of the

Afghanistan/Pakistan border (1240 miles so focus on the number 1240 in any way), the only 2 countries with wild poliovirus cases in 2017 and 2018

b. All ages and abilities can participate with any and all activities being included such as running, swimming, rowing, wheelchair basketball, dancing, yoga, knitting, walking, etc. etc.

c. Less physical activities such as knitting could also be linked to needs in the local community such as sewing knitted squares together to make blankets

d. Can be an individual challenge or groups of people working together

e. Announce your plans on World Polio Day with activities running any time you choose between World Polio Day and ending on the last day of Volunteer Expo 2020 3rd May 2020

f. There will be 72 hr Get Moving to End Polio challenge happening at Volunteer Expo 2020 to conclude this fundraising initiative

5. Fill Your Plate for Polio - 2 weeks before and after Rotary Day 23rd Feb 2020 a. This initiative was launched in February 2019 and

is an annual drive around Rotary Day to raise awareness and funds for End Polio Now

b. Make one of your club meetings around that date a Fill Your Plate for Polio event

c. Consider using Purple4Polio Ice Cream for this and for any other activities you are involved with including summer fetes etc.

d. Any type of food or drink can be used such as barbecue, Purple Ball, pie and mash, prosecco and blueberries or why not have a frugal meal

e. Involve your local communities in organising their own event in a ‘pyramid’ style

f. This annual initiative has the full support of the World’s Greatest Meal’s (WGM) organisers, Susanne Rea and Mukesh Malhotra. All events and the total monies raised for Fill Your Plate for Polio are reported by RotaryGBI to the WGM team so just register your event/s through the online form for RotaryGBI polio activities

Other suggested activities A. Rotary Polio Bear

i. Name The Bear ii. Bear Picnics iii. Bear Trail iv. Bear Travels v. Bear Zip Line/Parachute jumps

B. Crocus Buttonholes i. Tell your District Foundation Chairman how many

boxes of 100 Buttonholes you want as we need orders of 30,000 to be able to get the next batch manufactured. There is a 4 month lead time for them to arrive in the UK

ii. Place Buttonholes in local shops and businesses iii. Buttonholes are a simple fund raising tool at

public events C. Why I Care?

i. An electronic notice board for people’s answers ii. A chance to remind ourselves and others why

Rotary and our partners need to finish the job iii. Continue Breathe screenings. You must email

Jannine (see header) with details of events using a DVD/Blu-Ray so we keep the free royalty and charges arrangements

iv. Consider involving Polio survivors and/or others connected to Polio in some way and using extracts from Breathe to help bring home ‘Why I Care’ to all

D. Online Auction and the power of the internet i. An online auction will be happening on World

Polio Day ii. Explore opportunities for club/district events like

this or using the power of the internet generally iii. Social media is extremely powerful and using

successful polio related activities each year. As well as registering those activities with the online form for the Map if you think they are worth spreading the word about or being considered for RotaryGBI suggested activities tell Jannine

ii. Constructive feedback welcomed at all times iii. Tell us of any potential sponsors or partners that

can help the Rotary End Polio Now campaign, locally, regionally, across RotaryGBI or beyond

iv. Wear your Crocus Buttonhole and/or your End Polio Now lapel badge

v. Ensure all Rotarians have an ‘elevator speech’ about the Rotary Polio Story
