DO THE NEXT THING: Historian and theologian, Donald Nicholl, in his book Holiness, outlined

the first step for would-be saints. “Whatever your life, do the next thing that you are supposed

to do, but do it now and without delay.” Our lives are full of good intentions, things that we know

we should do, but somehow they find their way to the back of our minds and the bottom of our

priorities.

Discipleship is about attentiveness; attentiveness to what the Lord requires of me today. We can

never have the same certainty about what the Lord requires of us tomorrow or the day after!

Jesus used dramatic highlighting to summon His disciples to the demand of the present moment.

When a disciple asked for a delay to bury the dead, his response seemed unfeeling: “Leave the

dead to bury their dead. Your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.” Such

gospel stories challenge our priorities. Unconsciously our own selfish preferences are at work within

us. Before we can commit ourselves to anything, let alone to Christ, we must first recognise, and

then leave, the less worthy demands that creep into our lives.

Excerpts from a commentary by Fr. David McGough.

HUMANITY HAS NO FUTURE UNLESS IT CARES FOR CREATION: St. Francis, faithful to

Holy Scripture, invites us to recognise that nature is like a marvellous book speaking to us of God,

of His beauty and goodness. Francis used to ask the friar who tended the convent garden to leave

space for a rich flowerbed so that passers-by would raise their thoughts to God, Creator of such

beauty.

The Church has never ceased to remind people that by respecting the

mark of the Creator in all creation, we achieve a better understanding

of our true and profound human identity. Respect for the human being

and respect for nature are the same thing, they grow and find their just

measure if we respect the Creator and His creation, both in the human

creature and in nature.

Pope Benedict XVI, Rome, November 28, 2011.

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON: All peoples, clap your hands. Cry to God

with shouts of joy!

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: You are my inheritance, O Lord.

1. Preserve me, God, I take refuge in You. I say to the Lord: ‘You are

my God.’ O Lord, it is You who are my portion and cup; it is You

Yourself who are my prize.

2. I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel, who even at night directs

my heart. I keep the Lord ever in my sight: since He is at my right

hand, I shall stand firm.

3. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad; even my body shall rest

in safety. For You will not leave my soul among the dead, nor let

Your beloved know decay.

4. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in Your

presence, at Your right hand happiness for ever.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Alleluia, alleluia!

Speak, O Lord, Your servant is listening;

You have the words of everlasting life. Alleluia!

COMMUNION ANTIPHON: Bless the Lord,

O my soul, and all within me, His holy Name.
