From the Pastor’s Desk Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

SUMMER FESTIVAL: It’s our week for fun, fun and more fun. We will see if the plans we made were right on or “ack.” Let’s not think that way. My theory is if something’s not right “just change it” or tweak it but move on. The world is still spinning. Be POSITIVE and MOVE ON. All the set up and tear down people are in place for Monday and Tuesday evening, thanks to them and Frank. Herb is still signing up volunteers. Bakers are needed for each day. Bring your goodies to the bake shop between 4:00 and 9:00 PM each evening. My Brinton Tower friends and shut ins are praying for a safe and enjoyable Summer Fest. I am SO IMPRESSED by your support of pop, water and gifts. THANK YOU! Shuttle Service: Our bus will leave the grounds at 6:00 PM and every half hour thereafter for pick up and drop off. Parking and pick ups will be available at Propel Parking Lot, Fairways (leave space near building for their customers), along Brinton Manor Drive and Brinton Tower back lot (closer to Norm’s garage). Signs will be posted at pick up areas. Volunteers: Please come to the Information Booth at 5:30 PM so that you have time to accept your assignment and set up. **Please Note: Those who asked for specific assignments are asked to be on time because they are handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis. DEACON ORDINATION: On Saturday, June 15th Joseph Dougherty will be ordained to the Diaconate as will my cousin Kenneth Marlovits. Joe will become a Permanent Deacon and Ken a Transitional Deacon, which means he is on his way to be ordained a priest next year. Kindly keep them in your prayes. Ken is my fourth cousin. His mom was a Semler girl who was a neighbor and good friend as we grew up. Ken has a first cousin, Father Andrew Semler in the Dallas, Texas Diocese. I have two first cousins who are priests also. It seems to run in our family. Then of course Dad has two sisters who were Sisters of Divine Providence. Some of you had one, Sister Imelda Semler as principal at our former St. Joseph Parish/School. Since June 15th is also our Festival weekend, we will celebrate with Joe the next weekend. Deacon Joe will serve in his deacon role on Saturday at the 4:00 PM Mass. We will then go to the Thomas J. Usher

Gymnasium to have a reception. Then again at the 9:00 AM Mass after which you may congratulate him in the vestibule as we have to be at Sacred Heart for the 11:00 AM Mass. After this mass we will go to our Sacred Heart Hall for another reception. What will Deacon Joe do at Mass? The Deacon has a part in the Penitential Rite. He reads the Gospel and the Prayers of the Faithful (Petitions). He invites the assembly to exchange the sign of peace and finally he dismisses the assembly. Now all of these occur unless the Celebrant forgets which has been known to happen. The Deacon can also preach the Homily at mass, baptize and various other activities. I am extremely happy for Joe and I hope he will be assigned here. But we never know the assignments until after ordination. I’ll hopefully share his assignment with you on the weekend of June 15-16.

DAILY MASS: I am running this notice one more time so that vacationers might be aware. We now have our morning masses at Good Shepherd Church on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9:00 AM. I will be at the East Catholic School Mass on Fridays at 9:00 AM. With the school on summer recess, I just might attend the 9:00 AM mass at St. Maurice when I do not have a funeral here. Also on First Fridays I have mass at Brinton Tower.

Local Churches, Weekday Mass Schedule St. Colman, Turtle Creek: M-F 8:30 AM Holy Cross, East Pittsburgh: M-F 8:00 AM Madonna del Castello, Swissvale: M-S 7:30 AM St. Maurice, Forest Hills: M: 9:00 AM; and 7:00 PM (With Novena) T-F 7:00, 9:00 AM; S: 9:00 AM Word of God, Swissvale: (St. Anselm) M-F : 9:30 AM (Just a FYI: St. Colman Church has a Sunday evening Mass at 5:30 PM.)

VACATION SWEEPSTAKES RAFFLE: We had nine winners on our May raffle. Three of our people won $100.00 and six won $50.00. It was fun watching the numbers and looking for the winners. Our profit was about $1,600.00.

Thanks to all who supported this fund raiser.

Love and Peace, Father Semler

St. Vincent de Paul Society In the Gospel we see how Jesus was moved with pity and said to the widow, “Do not cry,” and the people knew that “God had visited his people.” When you hear the cries of the poor and reach out to help them, deep in their hearts the poor know that “God has visited them.”
