A generous bequest from a palliative care patient has breathed new life into the Gordonvale Memorial Hospital. Sixty-six-year-old Paul Burgess, formerly of Woree, was a palliative patient at Gordonvale before his death. The following year staff received word Mr Burgess had bequeathed a generous $150,000 which was following by a further $50,000 three years later.
Following extensive consultation with staff and other key stakeholders, it was decided the funds would be used to construct a covered outdoor deck to provide patients with a space to enjoy the outdoors. The state-of-the-art structure was officially opened by Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board Chair Bob Norman in a special ceremony at Gordonvale on the 16th of October 2014.
“It is my absolute pleasure to be here to officially unveil the Paul Burgess Memorial Deck,” he said. “I take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to Mr Burgess and his family for their incredible generosity. This area will provide our patients with a comfortable space in which to rest and reflect. This could not have been achieved without this act of kindness and compassion. I am pleased that we have been able to honour the memory of Mr Burgess in such a lasting and meaningful way.” Mr Norman also thanked the staff and builders for going “above and beyond” the call of duty. “There has been a great deal involved with bringing this to fruition and I’d like to thank each

and every one of you for your dedication and perseverance.”
Nurse Unit Manager Denise Edwards said the new structure was already making a “huge difference” for their palliative care patients. “There is no doubt we were crying out for something like this,” she said.
“Both the staff and our patients are so grateful to Mr Burgess and his family for this selfless and thoughtful act.” Ms Edwards said the funds had also allowed for a major refurbishment of the palliative care community equipment shed, including air conditioned room, to protect and store thousands of dollars’ worth of essential equipment.
“This has been another major addition not just for this hospital but for the community as a whole,” she said. She praised staff past and present for their tireless efforts throughout the planning and construction process. “From Chief Executive Julie Hartley-Jones, Bob Norman and our former director of nursing through to our fantastic maintenance and nursing staff, everyone has played a huge part in ensuring these funds were put to the best use possible to ensure the maximum benefit for our patients, their families and our staff.”
Mr Norman was joined by Ms Hartley-Jones and other key members of the Health Service Executive, Cr Steve Brain and dozens of other special guests in today’s official opening and thank you ceremony.

The Gordonvale Primary School Fete got more than it bargained for when Sergeant Renee Hanrahan and her team returned to school for a few hours on Friday the 17th of October.
The crew managed to set up a mini police expo display which featured police vehicles, a motorcycle and our newest recruit in training, a foster puppy ‘Rippa’ who wants to be a police dog when he grows up. It was a great success and very well received by the locals, not to mention the school principal who was blown away by the display area the team took over. Chatting and showing off the vehicles were order of the day.
Officers from Gordonvale and Edmonton Stations chipped in to help with Constables Harris, McKinnar and Villiers all donned their uniform and volunteering their own time to help out at the display. Officers from the stations and the Cairns Road Policing Unit popped by throughout the afternoon and evening and chatted to members of the community about a wide range of issues including police recruiting, neighbourhood watch and crime prevention issues in general.
Anyone wanting to sign up to be part of an E-Watch at Gordonvale is encouraged to make contact with their local police station. Police vehicles were once again very popular with many hopping on our motorcycle for a photo or taking a sneak peek inside one of our vehicles. Bicycle identification cards were a huge hit, as was little Rippa, the 10 week old puppy that Constable McKinnar is fostering. Sergeant Hanrahan said, “We had a great turn out with our display taking up quite a bit of space at the fete.
Many visitors to our display picked our brains about crime prevention initiatives as well as the police service in general and indicated they were interested in joining our ranks. Sergeant Hanrahan set up a fantastic display featuring 150 years of policing in Queensland and also promoted a ceremony for the 50th anniversary of the tragic passing of the late Senior Constable Desmond

In memory of SeniorConstable Des TrannoreA memorial ceremony was held at the Gordonvale Police Station on Friday the 24th of October to Mark the anniversary of Senior Constable Des Trannores’ tragic passing at the hands of an offender in 1964. Senior Constable Des Trannore bravely gave his life in service to his community 50 years ago. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the tragic passing of Senior Constable Desmond Trannore, Registered Number 5091, who was killed whilst on duty on 26 October 1964. Senior Constable Desmond Trannore, joined the Queensland Police Force in 1951 at the age of 22 years. On that fateful day in October, Senior Constable Des Trannore was stationed at Gordonvale, approximately 23 kilometres south of Cairns. He was on duty alone when he received notification of a domestic disturbance on a farm about 14 kilometres south of town at a Little Mulgrave property.
A man named John Thomas Verney had assaulted one of his stepsons and was assaulting his wife. Senior Constable Trannore arrived at the farmhouse and told the woman and her children to come with him to Gordonvale for medical treatment. Verney became agitated and threatened Senior Constable Trannore. More than once, Verney ordered Des from the property and whilst Mrs Verney was getting ready to leave, Verney produced a .310 rifle and threatened Senior Constable Trannore with it. Des was on the top step at the front of the farmhouse when Verney again ordered him from the property. Whilst Senior Constable Trannore was talking to him, Verney fired the rifle point blank and shot Des in the chest. The bullet penetrated his heart but Senior Constable Trannore was able to quickly move about 20 metres toward his police car. Des told the children to run; run for your lives. He then collapsed and died, aged 36 years. The terrified children ran to a neighbour and raised the alarm.
Some 300 police joined the hunt for Verney who subsequently surrendered the following morning to police in Cairns. Verney was charged with one count of murder and was later convicted of Senior Constable Trannore’s death and sentenced to life imprisonment. Senior Constable Trannore was laid to rest at the Gordonvale cemetery.

Do it for DemiResidents in Babinda are trying to help out one of their own young 13 year old Demi Bettini, who has been diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer, in her femur.
For treatment Demi has to travel to Brisbane, a long way from her home in North Queensland. At this stage she will be away from home for approximately six months. Money can't buy health or help the emotional strain but together we can help ease some of the financial burden.
Currently there is a touch football carnival organised for the 15th of November 2014 at the Babinda Showgrounds commencing at 4.30pm. Although the 16 teams are almost filled there is still a number of spots left. Entry fee per team is $60 and starts at 4.30pm. Teams will be made of 6 players only with a Minimum of 2 females and players must be 15y/o or older.
1st place prize: team wins $300. If you are unable to play, organisers are looking for volunteers to run the bar, the canteen and other jobs. Please dig deep and help out. Every title bit counts. Stayed tuned for more fundraising events in the near future by going to the Facebook page Do It For Demi.

Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum.
Hilda Malcolm was involved in and regularly attended many community organizations and events. She volunteered for many years at the Mulgrave Settlers Museum and demonstrated a wealth of knowledge about the Gordonvale and Babinda happenings of yesteryear. Hilda was very independent and even in her late eighties could be seen riding her push bike around Gordonvale to do her shopping and attend meetings and functions or she would be taking the bus into cairns with her shopping trolley. Hilda passed away in September this year at 92, a piece of the Far North gone, but her stories live on. This is an excerpt from an interview with Hilda in 2013/2014.
I, Hilda Malcolm (nee Hagart) was born in Babinda on 21st December1922.I was the 2nd child born to Leonard Hagart and Jane Niven and I had 3 brothers, Leonard, Don and John. Money was tight when I was growing up, but one of my favourite things to do on a Sunday in Babinda, was to watch the football. I didn’t have any money, so my friend Herma Hanush and I would climb over the fence, to watch the game. Herma’s uncle Frank, owned and operated Hanush’s Cordials factory, which was behind their house in Church Street Babinda and they made ice and soft drink. Frank made lemonade and orange, but his sarsaparilla was the best, as he had his own brew. A special treat for us every Sunday was Dad’s icecream and Mum’s custard. Mum made real thick custard with about six eggs, milk and sugar and flavoured it with passionfruit we grew down the back yard. We would watch Dad winding and winding the icecream churn. The custard would be in the middle part and around the side was chopped up ice with rock salt added. Dad had built a holiday shack down at Russell Heads, along with some other local families and we’d go down there in the August and Christmas school holidays. Dad would row to the Heads with our supplies and row all the way back to the landing to pick us up.
My Father developed cancer and became very sick while all us kids were still in school. Doctors advised him that he had to have an operation in Brisbane to remove the cancer and Mum went with him. After the operation, he was told that it was a success, but soon after developed pneumonia and passed away. Now Mum had four kids and no money coming in, so Mum did ironing for people and made cakes to make ends meet and it was our job as kids to go around Babinda on Saturdays to sell the cakes. I left school at 14 and started cleaning people’s houses and also a couple of boarding houses. I also learnt bookkeeping, shorthand and typing. In 1942, I went up to Mareeba looking for work. My brother Leonard was there working for the Civil Construction Corps building roads and he found a job for me at the Victoria Café.
I met my husband John Malcolm (although we all called him Jack) in Mareeba, as he was stationed there with the Australian Imperial Force during World War 2. We married on 10th April 1943. We stayed in Mareeba for a while then moved to Gordonvale. Jack had several jobs, clearing land for the Hambledon Mill, fencing with the railway, working with the electricity board and then finally got work with the Post Master General at Gordonvale. He’d have to check the line and walk from Gordonvale right up to Little Mulgrave. Jack would come home and tell me how many pythons he’d seen on the track that day. He stayed in this
I would like to share a story about a client who recently came to see me. He had severe back pain which also affected his legs and shoulders and his breath was slightly laboured.
When he hobbled in he was half hunched over and walking with a cane. He told me that he had been very grumpy and not sleeping very well. After his treatment he was able to walk upright and could stand up and sit with reduced pain. When he left he realised that he was not using his cane to support him and felt more balanced. I spoke to him a couple of days later and his family were relieved as his mood had changed for the better.
How we choose to deal with pain effects not only you but also those that you interact with everyday. It can be difficult to be pleasant and reasonable when you are in pain. Seeking treatment to reduce pain is part of you caring about your family and friends.
At Robyn’s Bowen Therapy and Emmett Technique I seek to relieve muscle pain and increase the body’s range of movement. I may also help with pain related to sinus, headaches and other issues such as dizziness. Most of my clients are treated in my clinic in Gordonvale. However if you are unable to come to the clinic I am happy to do home visits within the local area.
job for 28 years until he retired. We started a family and had two girls, Mavis and June. I started work again once they were a bit older. My grandmother, Granny Niven, was one of the first midwives of the district and she had four acres of land in a block from Swan Street to Griffin Street Gordonvale. She lived in an old house that had to be pulled down as it was so old. My Mum got this piece of land and rebuilt the same type of house, but on blocks. She rented it out for a while and that’s the house Jack and I moved into. It was only a small place and I’ve added on to it since. That’s where I am now. My Mum moved back to Gordonvale. She saw a little house for sale by removal. With the money she had plus a little bit from me, she got a carpenter fellow to shift it to a piece of land behind my house in Gordonvale.

Welcome to this month’s Editorial of all things Real Estate. This month I’d like to give a shout out to anyone looking to sell a Queenslander – low or high set, in any condition. The demand for these traditional homes is enormous and having recently sold one for list price in the first
week, I have many clients who have missed out that are looking for a similar home.
The other type of property that is in great demand is lifestyle acreage, with or without a dwelling, in any price range. For each acreage property that I have on my books there are over 40 people looking for their ideal place to call home. Lastly, mostly flat, available land over 1000m² to 3 to 5 acres is in high demand. First home owners can still obtain the government grant of $15,000 for a new build and our international investors are able to purchase land or a new home which has never been lived in and this opens up more opportunity for good offers in this high demand area.

Gordonvale is quite unique, not only in its character and history, but in its location as well. Officially a suburb of Cairns, it also has a very strong sense of independence that sets is distinctly apart. We must not lose that sense of independence and character, but build on it.
We need to ensure that we develop that same appreciation in our children, a fine example being the recent fete at Gordonvale State School; which brought out what is best in the community. We also need to ensure that we support local businesses and farmers and that we make sure, as we grow, the community remains as one.

In June 2014 Gordonvale residents and artists, Ian Tunbridge and Kylie Burke, were inspired by a dusty, unused space at the IGA end of Bryce’s Arcade.
By the end of the week they decided to commit to a lease with some ideas surrounding the transformation of the 5 x 10 metre area into an art studio, a workshop space and possibly further down the track a café. They have called their new space Trolley Studio – art + coffee and are now looking to be open to the public from November 10.
Both Ian and Kylie share a love for collecting and using reclaimed wood and found objects in their artwork so Trolley Studio definitely reflects this aesthetic. Nearly everything (except the sink) is made by hand and will be for sale, this even includes the tables and chairs. Trolley Studio will present artworks; craft objects and furniture for sale by a select number of artists and with a good espresso on offer hopes to be a productive, creative and happy place to spend some time when you are in Gordonvale. You can contact Trolley Studio – [email protected] or like them on Facebook.
