On Saturday 21st March 2015, the ladies of the Gordonvale branch of the Red Cross held their major fund-raising Cent Sale.

This year over 120 attendees participated in an afternoon of fun with a view to raising as much as they could toward “Red Cross Calling”.

With a tasty selection of yummy treats for afternoon tea and around 150 prizes being won, everyone had a great time. A grand total of $5,500 was raised through community generosity.

Our heartfelt thanks to all individual and businesses who donated prizes, plants, cakesand slices or purely came to help set up and decorate the hall, showing their support for this very worthwhile cause.

Without your generosity, this day would not be the yearly success it has become and knowing that people in need will benefit from such generosity of spirit is a real blessing.

Police have once again urged people to be careful in floodwaters after the rescue of a 27 year old lady who feel out of a kayak in the flooded Mulgrave River on Saturday the 18th of April.

Rescue services including fire, ambulance and police rushed to scene near the camping ground to find the kayaker clinging to a tree in the middle of the river.

Due to the dangerous conditions it was decided to call in the Emergency Services Helicopter and the lady was winched to safety.

The helicopter then landed near the location and the kayaker was treated by Queensland Ambulance.

The Mulgrave River is renowned for rising quickly and has been the location of many similar rescues over recent years.

Gordonvale State High School organised its own ANZAC Day Commemoration again this year witha special ceremony at the school on Friday, April 24.

The event was organised by the year 9 Summit students who are some of the top achieving students in the school. Many special guests were invited as well as many family and friends.

The traditional Welcome to Country was performed by Mr Neil Teal and this was followed by speeches from a number of the students. The main speaker of the day was Captain Mark Lane who spoke to the crowd about the ANZAC tradition and the importance of the day.

The event also included a reading of the ode by Kelsey Gammie, a minute silence and the raising of the flag by Scott Fehlberg, a member of the army cadets.

After the formal proceedings guests were treated to morning tea including a cake representing the Australian flag that was cut by Captain Lane. The music on the day was provided by the Gordonvale High school stage band and choir.

Robyn’s Real Estate ReadWelcome to this month's Editorial of all things Real Estate. It has, as usual, been a very busy month with good movement in the market across all price ranges and a great deal of enquiry from investors and others wishing to move to our glorious region from all parts of Australia.

Based on the latest HTW report and my previous reference to the National Property Clock, Cairns has, for the first time in many years, moved from the “Start of Recovery” phase into the “Rising Market” stage. This strengthening of our market has been helped partly due to strong building approvals and more people in jobs. With increasing prices and demand for houses and land we are seeing an increasing number of new properties being listed for sale and sellers have been waiting for this stronger market place in order to move on.

If you would like a free Market Appraisal or a Pre Listing Checklist on how to maximise your selling price, please give me a call or email for an honest and confidential chat about your real estate needs - Robyn Hawley-Whitton - 0488 071 007 or E: [email protected]

This year, eight students from Gordonvale State High School entered the Lions Youth of the Year competition. Once again, the school had the highest representation of competitors in the region; this was evidenced by the fact that some schools struggled to enter one student.

Lions Youth of the Year is a competition that is challenging and rigorous. However, it is also a very rewarding experience and certainly assists competitors with lifelong skills when they are applying for tertiary scholarships or contemplating professions in Medicine, Education, the Defence Force and Engineering. There are a number of hurdles that students must face in preparation for this exciting event.

Unlike other public speaking competitions, Lions Youth of the Year is broken down into several dimensions. The first component encompasses the completion of a comprehensive application form that requires the sporting, academic and community achievements of individual students.

This is followed by a gruelling interview on current affairs and the aspirations of applicants. Students are interviewed and judged by three adjudicators before they deliver two impromptu speeches and a five minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice.

The impromptu speech topics that students had less than a minute to respond to were: Cyber bullying – is it a problem? If so, what can we do about it? and Fast Food – health risk or convenience? Our students’ responses were entertaining and engaging. In fact, members of the audience were very impressed with their quick thinking and witty interpretations.

Our team presented very stirring and thought provoking addresses that kept audiences thoroughly engaged and interested. Speech topics were diverse and unique. They included reflections on the lives of Helen Keller, Miep Gies, Charlotte Bronte and Henrietta Marrie (Jackson’s grandmother) who has worked for the UN and is an adjunct Professor at a number of universities. Other topics included Laughter is the best medicine, The Reality of Life, The Magical World of Reading and the Peter Pan syndrome.

Our school representatives were Jackson, Brianna, Jess, Latishia, Meg, Amy, Kayla and Nathanael who was named the best public speaker and overall winner of the Gordonvale Heats. Nat will be representing our school at the zone finals on Saturday night and will be competing against regional winners.

All entrants should be commended for a tremendous effort. The Gordonvale Lions Club continue to be very supportive of our school and this has been a productive community partnership that has spanned many years.

The Gordonvale State High School 50th Anniversary organising committee are feverishly working

to finalise details for our big weekend in September. As part of the celebrations, a courtyard will be

revealed, and you can be a part of it!

Commemorative Bricks are now available for order for $60. Past and present students, staff, friends and

family are encouraged and invited to place an order to have their place in this courtyard. Numbers are

strictly limited, and once sold out will no longer be available.

More information is available on our Commemorative Bricks and order forms can be filled in and returned

either directly to the school, or via email to [email protected]. All payment and forms

must be received by the 15th of May. For more information please contact the school on 07 4043 3222.

It doesn’t have to be the stuff of dreams. There are several strategies that

could help you pay off your home loan sooner. And it doesn’t necessarily

mean sacrificing the things you love doing today.

The first step towards paying off your home sooner is to understand your loan -

how much you owe, how much you are paying and what other financial

commitments you have. Once you know where you stand you can start getting

smarter with your loan.

Consolidate your financial commitments: Over time, it’s easy to build up

small loans here and there. Individually, they may not seem like a lot but it could

mean you’re paying higher interest rates and lots of extra fees, which could keep

you in debt longer and really impact your lifestyle today. By bundling all your

financial commitments into one loan you can get a clearer picture of what you

owe and potentially save money too.

Make fortnightly repayments: If you can afford it (and you’re not doing it

already), consider changing your home loan repayments from monthly to

fortnightly. This can make a really big difference to your loan. Of course, by

changing your repayment frequency you may need to be more mindful when it

comes to managing your money. One way of doing this is to align your pay

dates and repayment cycle. Even though it may take time to adjust, you could

keep thousands of dollars in your pocket that you would have otherwise paid

in interest.

Use an offset account: An offset account is a simple tool that can potentially

help you save thousands over the lifetime of your home loan.

Own your home sooner and still enjoy the things you love: If owning your

home sooner and maintaining your lifestyle are both important priorities to you,

consider speaking to Bill, Jacinta or Alaina at Freedom Planning. Based on your

goals, and personal situation, we will be able to create a personalised plan that’s

right for you. With expert advice, you’ll be on track to owning your home sooner

while still enjoying the things you love today.

Back pain during pregnancy... You can get relief!

MOTHER’S DAY MAY SPECIAL!!!

I have had many pregnant ladies visit my clinic in the past month with persistent back pain. All were experiencing lower back, or sciatica with a few also having mid to upper back pain as well. Many women have back pain issues before they become pregnant while some start getting pain as early as 3 to 4 months. Having these issues for so long can put you at your wits end, not only with the pain, but sleepless nights from not being able to get comfortable. Sound familiar?

Relaxing the muscles relieves pain and as they support your bones will take the pressure off your pelvic area and spine. If you or anyone you know is putting up with pain and discomfort let them know that there is relief.

For the month of May I am offering a free hand or foot massage with every treatment.Treat yourself today. Gift vouchers available. Please like us on Facebook. Go to Robyn’s Bowen Therapy.

Commemoration of the Gordonvale Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital was held on April 24th thanks to the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board Chairman Bob Norman.

World War I claimed many young Australians who responded to the call. On the cenotaph at Gordonvale, our local soldiers who did not return are honoured. James and Edith O’Neill were parents of two of those boys and, together with Mrs. W. Griffin who had also lost a son wished to dedicate a memorial to the young soldiers. Their wish was shared by many in Gordonvale who grieved their own and their countries loss.

In 1920, a meeting was held for the purpose of establishing a cottage hospital. It was quite a journey from Gordonvale to the Cairns Hospital and some of the injured or sick did not make it or were worse for the delay to treatment. A committee of Gordonvale’s like-minded ladies was formed and the fundraising began. Over a five year period, the committee raised over 4000 pounds which is equivalent to $160 000 today, a remarkable effort. On 16th of July 1926, His Excellency Lord Stonehaven unveiled two newly erected concrete gate posts that contained memorial tablets inscribed with “Gordonvale Soldiers Memorial Hospital, one of which Bob Norman has had restored. This event was an important time to remember the young men and women of Gordonvale and recognise the community spirit that led to the establishment of the Gordonvale Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital.

Recollections by Donald Lawie

(Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum)

In 1956 when I first climbed the Pyramid,I could see the North-south highway meandering its way through Edmonton, right the way through Gordonvale and Aloomba and heading towards Deeral. The highway, which was very narrow, had many twists and turns and sharp right angle bends and as vehicles grew increasingly powerful with inexperienced drivers, there was hardly a week that went by without someone being killed or seriously injured.

A 12km deviation was planed to replace one of the worst stretches by running from Mackey’s Creek just north of Gordonvale, to rejoin the old road at Quingilli south of Behana Creek. The deviation was divided into four sections. The first section was to construct a new concrete bridge across the Mulgrave River.

The old low wooden bridge, which was downstream from the Mulgrave Mill, took the highway through Gordonvale along side the old Rambler station next to the museum. This old bridge was more often under water than above it and was no longer viable or reliable with the volume of traffic. So the new highway was diverted to the new higher bridge and was completed in 1959 by workers of the Mulgrave Shire Council. It was named the Carl Wordsworth Bridge after the then state member for Mulgrave. It was completed on time and under budget. Stage two comprised of the Mackey Creek to Riverstone Road (Gillies Highway) section, to connect the new bridge approaches.

A major unforseen problem arose when the new roadway traversed a sanitary reserve, where council had long buried night soil in trenches. The Main Roads bulldozer that was working on the project got bogged during construction and slumping also occurred in parts of the new road after construction had finished. Stage three, which commenced in 1962, ran from Swan Creek south of the new bridge to Leumann Road, keeping west of the main railway line.

At this stage there were disputes between council workers who new the terrain and climate, against university engineers from Main Roads Brisbane, who were trying to implement their new, high-tech road building practices. The director of Local Government threatened to abolish the council involvement, but diplomacy prevailed and the project continued.

Stage four, from 1963 – 1966, completed the bypass with a new road and extended bridge system across Behana Creek and its wide overflow. The Highway today has been widened and passing lanes installed and the basic planning and engineering has changed little, which is a credit to the efforts of the Mulgrave Shire Council. More information on the bypass construction can be found in Lyall Ford’s book “Roads in the Wilderness”. Lyall was a long-term MRD Engineer and his book is filled with the history of road building in Far North Queensland.

The Gordonvale Bypass

Last year we followed the progress of one of Gordonvales’ superstars of the Future. St Michaels grade 2 student Portia Eden 7 years old is heading off the Brisbane to compete in the BMX Australian national titles, with a hope of gaining the number #1 plate and the best rider in the Australian team for her age.

Whilst other children her age have been enjoying the school holidays, Portia has been training very hard both on the track and in the gym in an effort to be selected and giving her a great chance to travel to the 2015 world BMX titles in Belgium. You may remember in July last year when Portia competed in the BMX world titles in Rotterdam where she crowned second place in the 7 year old division. In 2013 Portia raced her first World titles in New Zealand after taking out the Australian championships. Portia came home from New Zealand as World ranked number 3, so it was inevitable that she was going to go a long way in the sport, which gave her the drive to try again in 2014 and better her world number 3 achievement. Portia started her beloved sport BMX at the tender age of 2 and from there has been unstoppable, her love for the sport quickly developed into a serious obsession with riding.

Once again Portia has been supported by many local businesses including Caltex Gordonvale, Tuff Tyres FNQ, Cairns Hardware and Mulgrave News. Portia’s parents would also like to thank everyone who bought tickets in the fundraising raffle.

The annual Gordonvale Police Charity Golf and Auction Day for 2015 will

be held at the Cairns Golf Club on Friday the 29th of May 2015. Over

recent years this event has raised in excess of $345,000 that has been

distributed amongst many Cairns based organisations that include the

Cairns Police Supporting Communities, and special needs children who

are suffering serious medical conditions.

The event has won recognition in the International Year of the Volunteer for the

“Best Community Event” awarded by the Mulgrave District Chamber of

Commerce Inc. This has been achievable as a result of the support and

generosity of businesses that have donated goods along with the efforts of

volunteers who have physically assisted with the Golf Day over the past 30

auction at 5pm.

The event is once again seeking the support of local businesses to assist with

the success of the event. Any goods or services that are donated can be

utilized either during the golf game or as a raffle prize or auction item.

In addition, advertising is available on each of the 18 holes on the golf course

for a price of $300 per hole. Naming rights for the day available for $2000 with

the sponsors name and logo appearing on all merchandise and advertising.

Cairns Adventist College Opening

The 56th Great Pyramid RaceGordonvale PoliceCharity Golf Day

Cairns Adventist College held its official opening ceremony on Friday April 24.The College relocated in October last year and its staff and 80 students have been waiting to officially celebrate this day for some time.

As part of the celebrations a number of dignitaries spoke to students, parents and community members who gathered at the College at midday prior to the official ribbon cutting ceremony. State member for Mulgrave, Curtis Pitt, spoke about the $910,000 contribution the State government had invested into the College. Local Councillor Steve Brain officially welcomed the College into the Gordonvale community. Other dignitaries, such as Adventist Schools Australia Director Dr. Daryl Murdoch, also spoke about the increased educational choice the College relocation has provided the community. College Captains Etuina Suavai and Blake English were keen to let their hearers know why they were so excited about their new school. The large, bright classrooms, the covered area and the tennis and basketball court featured highly in their speech. Principal Mr. Clinton Bond recounted a brief history of the College and said, “The relocation has been quite a journey. We are now here and our school is open to all in the community who value quality education.”

The newly-built primary school is the oldest Independent school in Cairns. It was established in 1950 in Severin Street in Parramatta Park and then relocated to Gatton Street, Manunda in 1989. However, it had been a vision of the College community to relocate from its previous one-acre site in Manunda for over ten years. “The vision is to grow to become an Early Learning Centre-Year 12 school,” Mr. Bond said.

The new 26-acre site was purchased in 2011 and work building began early 2014. The College has its own bus fleet and a unique fully door-to-door bus service, ranging from Smithfield to Gordonvale. Mr. Bond said, “We are all very excited about the opening. It is a big milestone in the College’s history. Ours truly is a community school and we anticipate many more enrolments from the Gordonvale and Edmonton communities.” If you are interested in more information about the College, or would like a tour, please contact the College Office on 4056 6144.
