ARE YOU A DOG LOVER? What do you notice when you drive into St. Francis de Sales Parish? It didn’t take long for me to notice a couple of interesting things as I drove onto the campus in my first few days at the parish. One of the first things you see as you drive in is a “LAB XING” sign – a wonderful sign that tells us that you might see one of those lovable dogs on campus. As you approach the rectory, you spot something on the right hand of the sidewalk – a statue of a black Labrador retriever. From those things alone, I knew I was coming to an awesome parish! It didn’t take long to realize why we have the statue and LAB XING sign on our property. It turns out that Fr. Schleicher loved dogs, too! He owned two black labs – both named Patty. It is said that he often laughed at how the schoolchildren would see him walking his dog and totally ignore him as they called out “Hi, Patty!” This makes me laugh because it is so true! It reminds me of the many priests I know nowadays that mention how their dogs do most of the evangelizing for them as people approach them for their dogs more than for them. Growing up in Akron, I always admired how priests like Fr. Kraker from St. Vincent would walk his black labs around the city neighborhoods. In my own life, I came to learn our whole neighborhood simply because of walking our dogs. You may or may not know it by now, but I am a dog lover. I grew up with them. I love how they bring joy and comfort to one’s life. I love how they invite you to daily walks that help you live a good, healthy life. They also welcome you every day when you come home. For the last five years of priesthood, I have wanted a dog. Now that I am able to get one, I am waiting for the right moment. Maybe Christmas? Maybe in the new year? Maybe after we move into the Memorare Center? There is a funny story that happened back in February that served as a sign that maybe I was coming to this parish. On a cold February morning, Fr. Bearer emailed me and said that a parishioner told him how she had a dream that the next pastor who came here would get a dog! Little did Fr. Bearer know that he sent it to me during my interview for this parish. I thought it was pretty amazing! Any way! Here I am! And I am so grateful! One of the many joys of priesthood is being able to bless things like homes, special moments in life, etc. But in a special way, I love the pet blessing! I think because it is usually chaotic with dogs barking, cats meowing, horses neighing, birds chirping, etc.! Very lively! So, are you a dog lover? Bring your dogs! How about a cat lover? Or fish? Or birds? Or horses? Whatever pet you have, come on by next Sunday at 4:00 p.m. on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi for the Pet Blessing at the Pavilion. It should be a great time to give thanks to God for the gift of these awesome, furry companions in our lives!May God’s peace and joy be with you,Fr. Jeremy Merzweiler

The parish of St. Francis de Sales has had a long history of working for the respect of all human life. Since the 1980s, beginning with Joe and Shirley VanDevere, educating and encouraging participation in events have been a legacy including the March for Life in Washington, D.C., speaking to students in the schools, life chain, crosses on the lawn, supporting Northeast Ohio Right to Life and helping those in crisis pregnancies with the Embrace Clinic and Care Center. The pandemic put a hold on some events, but it is so very necessary to remember the work going on.

Much information is available through the website of Right to Life of Northeast Ohio (rtlofneo.com.)Their newsletters are available under “News.”

October is the month of the Rosary and is Respect Life month. We would like to invite you to once again gather to pray the Rosary on Sunday, October 4, at noon following Mass. It will take place as before on church property on Manchester Road, practicing safe distancing this year. Please come and pray with us. If it rains, we will stay in Church.

As a reminder, I would encourage everyone to take part in the spiritual adoption program to help stop abortion. This prayer, inspired by the late Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, encourages the spiritual adoption of an unborn child, praying daily for 9 months or a full year for one particular (but unknown) child’s life to be spared from abortion and be allowed to continue to live. The prayer goes, “Jesus, Mary and Joseph I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn child I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” When able, we can once again offer a prayer card in church, but you may request one from us at 330-256-5928.

Please keep all Life issues in your prayers along with all your thoughtful intentions. May God bless us as we strive to do His will in our lives, our nation and the world.

UPCOMING SCRIPTURE STUDY Please consider joining us by participating in this study of St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians, a community he loved and one that continued to support him while he was in prison. Here, Dr. Tim Gray takes us back in time, providing us with insight into this simple and beautiful letter. Learn the simple truth as St. Thomas Aquinas states, “You cannot come to live what you do not know,” and as St. Jerome says, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Let this be the beginning of a new form of prayer for you. You can start by going onto “Formed.” Click on the Search icon at the bottom of the pages. Search for “Lectio: Philippians by Dr. Tim Gray” under “Collections.” Scroll down to the Study Guide and on page 2 learn the beauty of Lectio Divina or click on the Trailer for a sneak peek of the series. This is a 7-week program and sessions will begin the week of October 5th. Video and material are available on FORMED.ORG. Study Guides are available for $9.00. There will be group and virtual sessions. Zoom will be used for the virtual sessions. To sign up and for more information, go to the parish website at stfparish.com. You can also email or call Frank at 330-990-0139 or [email protected]. The schedule of planned meetings can be found on our website (www.stfparish.com). Go to the site and let the banner scroll until Lectio shows up and click where noted to find a list of scheduled meetings and a sign-up sheet. Your facilitator will contact you once you register.

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 27, 2020

Thank you so much for coming to our first hike last Saturday! What a gift and a joy it was to be able to hike and encounter God’s creation and Word with you! Due to the great turnout, it has made me make a few phone calls about requiring a permit. Turns out that obtaining a permit requires communication with the Ohio Department of Health and filing for liability insurance for our parish. After speaking with the Summit County Metroparks, it was suggested to offer other hikes so that we can have smaller groups and avoid getting a permit. We are aiming for groups of 25. Also, it would be helpful if you could try and carpool so that we don’t take up all of the parking spaces at each park.

Again, I am so grateful for your response! You all show me how important it is to go outside and encounter beauty and fresh air – something we all need so badly! Can’t wait to keep journeying with you on the trails and in the Faith!
