Dear Parishioners,

In 1785, Fr. Francisco Palóu wrote of his mentor: “The memory of Junípero Serra shall not fail, because the works he performed when alive shall be impressed in the minds of the dwellers of this New California; despite the ravages of me, they shall not be forgo en.” California is a land of the missions! In fact, we find ourselves in the middle of a network of missions founded by a priest with a vision, Fr. Junípero Serra, now St. Junípero Serra. Thanks to the very land that we walk upon, we have a perpetual reminder of the significance and mission of Chris an discipleship. To him can truly be directed the words: “Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small ma ers, I will give you great responsibili es. Come, share your master’s joy.” (Mt 25, 21)

We can learn from his example. It says to us here at Our Lady of Peace: recognize, receive, and accept the gi s that God has given us and commit them to the service of the overall mission of our parish and the wider universal church. As St. Peter succinctly instructs: “each one has received a gi , use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10)

As I highlighted last week, we are Chris an disciples and this is something very special. It is a way of life and a manner of ac on. And this way of life and manner of ac on needs a plan that is spiritually based and specific to the parish of Our Lady of Peace. We call this the “Parish Mission Statement.”

To many this statement may seem like a formality, but to the faithful disciple it is a way of life. Why? Because, the disciple acknowledges and seeks to use, as a good steward, the gi s that he or she has been given, which means we need to point them in a direc on. A person wants to know where they are going and how to get there. For this reason, we have a mission statement. It helps us to unify, energize and become more ac vely involved when we follow a common direc on. It ar culates goals and objec ves that form the vision allowing the mission to become a lived reality and to not remain simply words on a sheet of paper.

Therefore, returning to this magnificent example of history and culture that comprises the California Missions, we can see firsthand the fruits of a good and faithful steward—St. Junípero Serra—and his clear vision. Going beyond the 9 missions he founded and 24,000 miles he walked, it is not hard to determine that the founda on of major metropolitan ci es and roadways was the result of this work. Perhaps even more impressive is the striking simplicity of its cause – a friendship with Jesus Christ, the grateful response of a Chris an disciple.

The unmistakable vision that he possessed directed him to concretely exercise his discipleship. If one is a disciple but never acts on their discipleship, their discipleship is meaningless. One cannot be a disciple without also being a steward of the gi s that God has given. Stewardship is the ac ve branch of discipleship. It is the exercise of discipleship, here at Our Lady of Peace, unified and specified by our specific mission.

As our Holy Father Pope Francis reminded us on the evening of St. Junípero Serra’s canoniza on, let us learn from him! The Pope said, “Father Serra had a mo o which inspired his life and work, not just a saying, but above all a reality which shaped the way he lived: siempre adelante! Keep moving forward! For him, this was the way to con nue experiencing the joy of the Gospel, to keep his heart from growing numb, from being anesthe zed. He kept moving forward, because the Lord was wai ng. He kept going, because his brothers and sisters were wai ng.” (23 September 2015)

Next week we will begin to consider the Mission Statement in its different parts to help us come to a deeper knowledge and love of our mission so that we may con nue to grow in and experience the joy of Chris an discipleship.

Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us!

Fr. Brian
