1. Chief of State Symbolic head of nation

2. Chief Executive/Administrator Makes sure the nation runs smoothly on a
day to day basis. (has cabinet and entire
federal bureaucracy to help)
. Examples: Taking emergency actions (Katrina)

Appointing heads of Departments
3. Chief Diplomat• Appoints and receives ambassadors (means
we recognize that country)
• Makes treaties and executive agreements
• Foreign policy is unilateral because there can only be one foreign policy not 535 so he takes the initiative in setting U.S. course in foreign policy

4. Commander-in-chief• Commands the branches of the military
• Civilian control of military is a tradition
• Makes decisions on weapons and the path the military will make in the future
• Examples: making plans to go into Yemen
5. Chief Legislator• Recommends legislation to Congress• Makes a STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS –
telling Congress what we need• Power of the Veto• Calls on different groups to put pressure on
Congress to get policies through Congress
6. Party Chief• President must be a party leader to be elected,
to get legislation passed and to see his policies are backed by the people
• President campaigns and gives support to party members who are up for election to keep his party in power
• Examples:
