McCarthy-Truman Dialogue on the Red Scare (1950)

In this telegram, Senator Joseph McCarthy informed President Truman that the State Department was full of communists. This marked the beginning of the Red Scare of the 1950s, which led to a wide variety of restrictions on individual freedoms. Truman's reply (also included here) was probably never sent, but reflected his growing alarm at the anti-communist crusade that he had helped to launch.
