Principal’s Update WELCOME TO NEW STAFF MEMBER The new staff member Mel Kennedy will take over the Marketing and Communications role in the school. Mel has a background in communications and is a mother of three children (two primary and one high school). Mel will be helping with the
promotion of the school, grant writing and assisting with parent groups and functions. Stephanie Logan, due to family reasons, was not able to continue in the position. Please welcome Mel to our school team.
MASTER TEACHER With our focus on reading in Term 1, Tracey Leong, Master Teacher, has been working with teachers on the analysis of each students’ reading data and personalising reading goals and setting targets. Her work has been well received by teachers as we move towards a consistent approach to reading and improved reading outcomes from P - 6.
JOGGING CLUB HAS STARTED Mr Trent and Ms Harris have started the jogging club each
morning from 8:30 am – 8:45 am. It
is supported by the sports captains. I encourage all students to increase their fitness by attending jogging club. Increased fitness of children builds resilience, good health and better learning (more information within)

PET PEP AVA
This week the Prep students had
visitors who came to talk to
them about pets and how to
look after them.
Some of their visitors had four
legs and others had two. They
had 3 four legged visitors who
helped them learn how to be
safe around dogs.
The two legged visitors were Vets
who spoke about caring for pets
and keeping them safe.
READING
Reading is a wonderful way to
learn about the world as well as develop a great vocabulary.
Every child should read out loud
to somebody everyday. Hearing
yourself read out loud, is very
different to reading inside your head.
It is also good to read to your
child everyday. This
demonstrates good reading behaviours like fluency and
pronunciation. Evidence shows
that children who read and are
read to every day, progress faster
in this area and develop a love of
reading.
Have a great week.

ASSEMBLY CHANGE OF DATES
The following changes have
needed to be made to the assembly schedule over the next
few weeks. These will
accommodate whole school and
community events.
Assembly for the whole school or
senior/junior school will be held
in the activity centre.
Week 5 Monday 23 FEB: whole school
assembly - Lunar New Year
Celebrations
Week 6 Monday 2 MAR: senior assembly
(only) 2:15-3:00pm Friday 6 MAR: junior assembly
(only) 2:15-3:00pm
Week 7 Monday 9 MAR - cancelled due to
CGEN rehearsal.
NUMERACY IMPROVEMENT
The improvement of Numeracy for
all students is another school
wide focus in 2015.
To assist our teachers and
students, year 3 – 6 classes
participate in ‘Mathematics
Differentiation’ classes often
referred to as Maths Diff. Students in each year level are
supported by a specific classroom
teacher and differentiated
program in the area of Numeracy
and Mathematics.
In 2015 the senior school classes
are strategically timetabled in the
morning session. This assists
with the placement of resources
in this subject area. Classes are assisted with teacher aides and
specialist teachers have been
employed to cater for individual
needs. In year 6 approximately
10 students are participating in
the Distance Education program which is accelerated learning at
their level.
Mathletics is another resource
available to students. It is a fun, supportive and effective online
tool.

Chinese lunar New Year is
approaching on Thursday, 19
Feb 2015. It is the year of the
SHEEP (GOAT)
All Parents are welcome to join a
short celebration of Lunar New
Year at Assembly on 23 February
2015 (week 5). It will be a
wonderful, colourful display if
many students wear their
country’s outfits so please
encourage them to join in. All
other students may wear a
sheep T shirt or a red T shirt
or bring a toy sheep to
Assembly.
Chinese New Year is the most
important of the Chinese
holidays, and is a time of
feasting with the family,
celebration, fireworks and gift-
giving. It is a 15 day holiday,
beginning on the first day of a
new moon and ending with the
full moon on the day of the
Lantern Festival. The Chinese
calendar is based on the lunar
year, so the date of Chinese New
Year changes every year. The
Chinese calendar follows a 12
year pattern with each year
named after an animal. There
are various stories which explain
this. The simplest story, is the
Jade Emperor invited all of the
animals to have a race for a New
Year celebration, but only the
first 12 animals to the finish line
were rewarded with a year
named after each of them. The
order of those 12 animals is the
Rat, followed by the Ox, Tiger,
Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse,
Goat (or Sheep), Monkey,
Rooster, Dog and Pig.
Find out your animal according
to the year you were born.
HAVE FUN!

Library News PARENT READING INFORMATION
SESSIONS It was lovely to meet so many parents last week during these sessions. Thank you to everyone who attended. For those who were unable to attend, a brief overview of the topics covered in each session will be included in the next library
newsletter, due out later this month. We are currently considering other topics for parent information sessions in 2015. If you have a suggestion for a workshop, please contact me at [email protected] and we will see what we can fit in.
BOOK CLUB Thank you for your support of Book Club. Issue one earned us almost $200 in rewards. It was great to see
so many parents taking advantage of the new LOOP online ordering system. Issue one orders are now
closed. Issue two should be distributed by teachers in the coming weeks.
READING CHALLENGE We have already had some avid readers complete the challenge! All entries need to include the student’s name and class, then be delivered to the library. Good luck to everyone still reading. I hope you and your children are enjoying the opportunity to explore a variety of texts. Entries are due at the end of week 9. Happy reading, Ms Ennis Teacher Librarian
