Principal’s Update By Margaret Berry WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL Members of the Traffic Management

Group were joined by a group of enthusiastic teachers, teacher aides, parents and students on the inaugural Walk Safely to School last Friday.

Although we were missing our student leaders and older students who were involved in Gala Day, it was a fun experience to promote road safety and

exercise. We already have some exciting ideas for the 2017 Walk Safely to School.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP 2 MINUTE

ZONE MUSGRAVE RD The Drop Off and Pick Up Zone at the front of the school is one of our highest risk areas for the safety of our children.

Road Safety Officers who attended the last Traffic Management Group meeting looked at the how the Zone is operating

and identified the following management issues: parents leaving their cars to find their children; cars staying longer than 2 minute in the zone; cars not moving to

the front of the pick up zone and as a result cars entering and exiting from various points; a few cars attempting U-turns after picking up their children.

The Road Safety Officers will be assisting us to put in clear processes and better

ways for students to be identified quickly as their parents arrive for pick up.

The new processes will begin next term and all staff, parents and students using the Musgrave Road Drop Off and Pick Up Zone will receive/be trained in the new

guidelines. Thank you to all involved in improving safety for our children. POSITIVE SCHOOLS CONFERENCE

Last week eight members of the school support team, including our chaplain Ben Chapman and guidance officer Robyn Usher, attended the Positive

Schools conference. Speakers at the conference, including child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, author Alfie Kohn, indigenous educator Dr Chris Sarra and Toni Powell author of The Yellow Car – Reducing Anxiety and Increasing Confidence in Kids and Teens

had a common theme of building positive

self-esteem in children. Speakers highlighted the need for schools to be a motivated and cohesive community and that classrooms are the environments

where well-being and positivity are taught and encouraged. Robertson has embedded the You Can Do It program. The keys of Confidence, Getting Along,

Persistence and Organisation are taught and nurtured. The newly formed Positive Behaviour for Learning Committee is reviewing our whole school process in

behaviour management with the assistance of a regional advisor, Ms Louissa Chalk. The professional

learnings from the Positive School’s conference will further inform our practices as we make the well-being of our students a priority.

SORRY DAY 26 MAY AND NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK FROM 27 MAY TO 3 JUNE

Each year we there are times set aside to recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island historical events. At school Sorry

Day 26 May to commemorate the history of forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from

families and National Reconciliation Week from 27 May to 3 June. The start and finish dates represent significant milestones for Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander peoples. 27 May marks the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum where over 90% of Australians voted to give the

Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census.

As a community it is a time to reflect and acknowledge the sacrifices they have made and the hardship they have

endured. The School Aboriginal and Torres Strait Committee and our indigenous students

are leading the recognition of these events in our school.

IPSWICH EISTEDDFOD Last week 60 students from the senior choir, along with Miss Vanderbyl and Mrs Waldie participated in the Ipswich Eisteddfod. The students performed two songs and were competing against approximately ten other schools in this section of the competition. Robertson was awarded second place and the students represented their

school with pride. Congratulations to the Music team.

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE

The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual statewide initiative for state and non-state schools and home-educated students up to Year 9. The challenge is not

a competition but aims to improve literacy and encourage children to engage in reading for pleasure and learning. Robertson State School is registered for this initiative which will commence in August. The official reading period is from May – August. Due to the school Book Fair, upcoming Book Week and Family Reading month of May, our school will participate June to August. Look out for more information and happy reading.

PREPARING FOR WINTER As we prepare for the upcoming winter months it is important to make sure students have their uniforms including jumpers and hats clearly labelled. Please check the lost property box outside the office if you are missing any uniform items. In winter we usually find that students feel the effects of the colder weather and recommend you talk to them about what they are eating for lunch. Packing a few extra healthy snacks can help with keeping the winter chill and hunger away.

YEAR 6 CANBERRA CAMP Thank you to all of the parents and teachers who attended the Year 6 information session about the upcoming Canberra Camp. It was nice to see so many of you there. Keep your eye out for the itinerary and camp requirements which will be coming out shortly. You should have received an invoice with the balance of

payment and details of when the final payment needs to be made. DA VINCI DECATHLON This week we had three teams of students attend the da Vinci Decathlon down at A. B. Patterson College on the Gold Coast. Mr Tim Colston and Mrs Sieglinde Salzlechner accompanied the students by bus to this exciting event. I have been working with them on Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes with Mrs Slazlechner, preparing them for the difficult challenge ahead. I am looking forward to hearing how they went. ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH EFFORT AWARDS Congratuations to all the senior students who received an Achievement Through Effort Award for hard work and dedication to their studies.

Character and Culture Festival operated by the QLD Taiwan

Centre is underway. All students

(Chinese native and non-native

speaking students) from Prep to

Year 6 are encouraged to

participate in this event. The

Chinese competitions include

colouring, reading aloud and hand

writing etc. The LOTE department is currently working on selecting

students to attend different

competitions. Please contact Ms

Wang and Ms Hsieh if your

Chinese competitions.

The Year 6 LOTE excursion will

be held on Wednesday 8 June. We

will visit Sunnybank Shopping

Centre and have lunch at the

Vinci Decathlon was

this week on

School entered three teams – one Year 5 and two Year 6

teams.

The Di Vinci Decathlon is an

academic interschool gala

competition operated in the spirit

of an Olympic Decathlon.

Students competed as a team in

the following ten disciplines:

Mathematics and Chess –

emphasis on problem solving,

number patterns and logic puzzles

English – spelling, word origins, definitions, textual analysis and

writing tasks

Science – students engage with

higher level scientific concepts to

test their ability to apply them

Code Breaking – students will

decipher complex codes

Engineering Challenge – a design

task that tests problem solving

skills, creativity and ingenuity

Philosophy – dealing with logic,

observations and evidence

Creative Producers – emphasis

on creating a 60 second dramatic performance under pressure

ROBOTICS The senior robotics group have

been busy learning how to use the

peripherals to go with their EV3

robots. They have used the colour

sensor that allows them to follow a

line along the ground and the

ultrasonic sensor that generates

sound waves and reads their

echoes to detect and measure

distance from objects. It can also

send single sound waves to work

as sonar or listen for a sound wave

that triggers the start of a

program.

In the coming weeks the boys will need to use all the skills they have

learned to complete a series of

challenges.

A big thank you to all the students that helped last Thursday to

cleanup the entrance at the rear of

the school. Students from all year

levels came together and in a very

mature way worked as a team to

remove rubbish and weeds from

around the path. Students also

helped with the removal of leaf

litter and dirt from on top of the

path. Well done to all that helped

Last Friday for Gala Day 3 it was

great to see some spirted team

efforts. I was lucky enough to see

Mrs Grafton’s softball team score a

couple of wins, Mr Pulsford’s soccer teams in a very tense 0 - 0

draw and Mr Gibb’s girls’ soccer

with some wins and a draw. Apart

from some outstanding team play

there were some standout

individual efforts as well. I

watched as Brianna had a full

count against her and after hitting

foul balls three times in a row still

persevered to get a hit in play and

get to base. There was a well

constructed goal, started by Riley

and finished off by Lauren and finally some great goal keeping by

Chris to preserve the balance in a

close match.

This concludes the Gala Day

program for this semester. The

children will soon select their

preferred activities for the next

series of interschool sport. The

sports on offer include boys and

girls AFL, boys and girls touch

football, girls netball, boys softball

and cricket. I look forward to

working with the students and

teachers in preparation for next

semester.

It is also great to see Robertson continued to be well represented at district sport trials. Well done to Samuel, Dylan, Josh and Jennifer who recently competed at district Tennis. An extra congratulations to Jennifer who made the district team and will be off to compete at the regional event held at the Brisbane Tennis Centre.

points need to be included rather

than general conversation.

THANKS FOR CELEBRATING

CHAPPY DAY Last Wednesday many students

from our school came down to the

oval and had a blast at the Super

Fun Lunchtime. There was lots of

laughter as students played with

the giant earth ball, or the giant

parachute, or hopped around in a

sack or on a kangaroo ball. A big

thank you to all the teachers,

parents, and Year 6 students who

helped with the day. We couldn't

Principal’s Update校長通訊

WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL 安全走路上學

上週五，我們充滿熱情的老師、助教、家長和學生們加入了我們交通管理團隊，參加了安全走路走路上學的活動。很可惜參加校際運動會的學生無

法參加此次活動，這是一個道路安全教育的好機會，我們對於2017年的安全上學日已經有了一些新主意。

DROP OFF AND PICK UP 2 MINUTE ZONE MUSGRAVE RD Musgrave路上兩分鐘接送區域

學校前門接送區域的交通存在很多安全隱患，道路交通安全官員查看了學校的交通情況，指出家長們將車停在兩分鐘接送區域超過兩分鐘，並離開

車去找孩子；家長不講車開到最前面的接送區域，這樣造成車子從不同位置進進出出；還有些車嘗試掉頭。交通安全官員將協助我們制定更順暢的

交通管理方案！新的方案將從下個學期開始實施，所有使用Musgrave路的學校職工和學生家長們將受到新的道路方案指導，感謝大家對提高學生

道路安全付出的努力。

POSITIVE SCHOOLS CONFERENCE 學校發展會議

上個星期，駐校主教Ben Chapman、指導老師Robyn Usher等八名學校社區成員參加了學校發展會議，兒童心理學家Dr Michael Carr-

Gregg、作家Alfie Kohn、原住民教育家Dr Chris Sarra，以及《黃色小車—— 致青少年，減少青焦慮，提高自信》的作者Toni

Powell等發表了演講，他們都側重了培養兒童自尊心的重要性。演講嘉賓們還強調了學校應該是一個積極向上的團體，教室則是激勵學生學習的環

境。Robertson試行“你能行”的項目，關注培養學生的信心、交往能力、毅力和組織能力。新組成的學習行為發展團體在地區指導老師Ms Louissa

Chalk的協助下，正在回顧學校行為管理的一些列措施，學習行為發展團體將為學生的全面發展提出可行性計畫。

。5月27日，超過90%的公民投票支持聯邦政府可以為原住民立法，承認他們在國家中的地位。我們重視原住民度過的艱辛生活，學校的原住民協

會及學生將領導道歉日的活動。

IPSWICH EISTEDDFOD Ipswich音樂節

上個星期，60名高年級合唱隊成員了參加了Ipswich音樂節，Miss Vanderbyl和Mrs

Waldie有陪同參加，我們的學生展現了兩首曲子，與其他十多個學校的代表共同競技。Robertson代表隊最後取得了第二名的好成績，恭喜我們的

音樂團隊。

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE 最高閱讀挑戰

最高閱讀挑戰是全國範圍內的挑戰，州立學校、私立學校和家庭學校九年級及九年級以下的孩子們都可以參與，這次挑戰不是比賽，希望通過此次

活動提高學生的文學能力，鼓勵養成閱讀的好習慣。Robertson State

School參與此次活動，全國挑戰從五月持續到八月，由於學校的書展以及即將到來的讀書周和家庭讀書月活動，我們學校將從六月參加到八月。

PREPARING FOR WINTER 準備好過冬天

冬天已經來了，請確認學生穿上校服外衣和帽子，校服和帽子都要做上標記，如果你有遺失的物品，請查看事物招領的箱子。冬天的時候學生的生

活習慣上會有一些變化，和孩子討論一下他們的飲食，準備一些健康的食物可以讓孩子在冬天覺得沒有那麼容易冷和餓。

LOTE News 中文科通訊 (by Ms Hsieh)

2016年昆士蘭漢字和文化節由昆士蘭台灣中心舉辦，所有學前班至六年級的學生（包括中文為母語者和中文非母語者）都可以參加這次活動。活動

包括塗色、朗讀以及寫字等，中文部門正在積極籌備參加此次活動，如果您的孩子感興趣或者有任何問題請聯繫謝老師。

去年，昆士蘭家庭計畫培訓的Susan Summers為四至六年級的家長們提供了信息分享會，今年還將召開一次。

地點：Robertson State School圖書館

停車：請將車停在Estoril St上的停車場

四年級會議的內容——只包括“保護行為”，男生與女生的不同，身體部位的成長於改變。

昆士蘭十項全能比賽於本周5月25日星期三舉辦，我們學校排除了一個五年級代表隊和兩支六年級代表隊。全能比賽是體現奧運精神的校際比賽，

ROBOTICS 機器人

高年級機器人團隊正在學習如果使用外部設備配合EV3機器人，他們使用了顏色感應使機器人可以沿著線走，以及超聲波感應來測量障礙物距離。

在接下來幾周，孩子們將運用所有學到的技能戰勝一系列挑戰。

PE News 體育科通訊

上週五我們結束了第三次校際運動會，學生們都表現都非常出色！上半年的校際運動會已經結束了，學生們將選擇之後校際運動會想參加的項目，

可以選擇的項目有男子和女子AFL和觸身式橄欖球，女子無擋板籃球，男子壘球和板球，期待看到學生們下週的表現。

此外，很高興看到Robertson運動員們在區體育賽事中的出色表現，Samuel, Dylan,

Josh和Jennifer在區網球比賽中表現出優異水平並晉級下一輪比賽。

感謝所有早上來和我聊天的家長們，很高興見到大家，期待可以見到更多的家長，我星期二至星期五8：30am之後在家長會辦公室。此外，我們需

要一名秘書！秘書的工作是：會議記錄；整理文件；整理成員資料；整理雇員/個人記錄（雇傭聯繫與信件）；確認會議遵循相應程序；準備會議日

程；整理成員註冊等。使用錄音筆可以幫助回憶會議內容，會議記錄只需要記錄重點，不需要記錄冗長的對話。

Aims of You Can Do It! Education

你可以做到？YCDI是幫助孩子們取得更高成就的項目，它幫助孩子們提高社交、情緒和行為上的能力並且發掘每個孩子的不同潛力。YCLD目的為

提高孩子的基礎能力，讓他們成為一個社交、情感和行為習慣上的全人。

本學期的關注點為“毅力”。“毅力”是當你覺得事情很難的時候不但不放棄還努力嘗試。“毅力”的行為表現有：1）當學校功課很難得時候，堅持努力

嘗試；2）不受別人影響而分心；3）做完功課後檢查看是否有錯誤；4）按時完成任務。

如何提高毅力？我能行，意思是儘管攻功課很難，但是我能行；努力，意思是我越努力，我離成功就越近；努力是辛苦的，意思想成功，我們有時

候做事情不是為了有趣而做的。
