String Ensembles wins at the Redlands Eisteddfod.

Deputy News By Ms Cartia Balladone

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES

Last week our pre-prep students

and younger siblings joined Ms

Ennis and Mr Grant for the story time session in the library. The

children and their parents were

engaged in a robotics session

creating small scale robotic

configurations.

Students from year 6 were able to

support our little learners in

programming various movements

with their robotic vehicles.

If parents would like to

participate in the story time

session we invite you to join Ms

Ennis in the library every Thursday afternoon from 2:00 pm

– 3:00 pm. These sessions have

focused on literacy, numeracy,

digital technologies skills as well

as visual arts and engagement in literature.

LOTE LESSONS PREP TO YEAR

2

LOTE (Languages Other Than

English) is a subject being taught in the early years. Students from

Prep to Year 2 are now engaging

in the Chinese language and are

being taught by Mrs Joy Wang

and supported by teacher aide

Miss Kama Zhang.

Students are working at

differentiated levels within the

curriculum and learn within the

native and non-native speaker’s

categories. The school is trialling

the draft National curriculum expectations.

Deputy News By Ms Jennifer Johnson

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Thank you to all parents who

attended the Parent- Teacher

interviews. The teachers were all

very excited to share your

children’s work and anecdotes with you. The support we receive

from you is very welcomed and

beneficial to the student’s

outcomes.

This week in WRITING NEWS I will be continuing with tips for

each of the 6 Traits of Writing

giving some advice around

Sentence Fluency and how you

assist your child at home.

Sentence Fluency

Sentence Fluency gives our writing a sense of rhythm and

grace. The writing has an easy

flow when read aloud. Sentences

are well-built with varied

structures that invites expressive

oral reading. Sentences need to be clear and powerful, creating

just the right meaning. This is

accomplished through logic,

creative phrasing, parallel

constructions, alliteration, and a variety with sentence length and

structure. Some questions

parents can ask

· Do my sentences begin in

different ways? · Are some sentences long and

some short?

· Is it easy to read my work out

loud with expression?

· Have I used transitions to help my sentences fit together?

SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY

Just a reminder that this year’s

annual School Opinion Survey

will be conducted between 19 July and 29 July 2016. Your

child has been given your

Parent/Caregiver Survey online

access slip which contains login

and password details.

The oldest child in your family

should have brought home a blue

form with details about the

School Opinion Survey on it. The

School Opinion Survey is undertaken each year by the

Department of Education and

Training, State Schools Division

to obtain opinion information

from parents/caregivers, students and school staff.

As partners in your child's

education, this is an excellent

means by which to reinforce the

many opportunities our school currently provides for your child.

Last chance to participate is

Friday 29 July.

CYBER SAFETY Do you know who your children chat to online?

The QLD Police have put out an

excellent publication on safe internet practices for all students. I encourage all parents to read through the document and speak to their children about it. The document can be found here.

Some helpful tips to keeping your child safe include being aware of the programs and files on your/their computers, placing computers in an open place in the house and having the monitor visible at all times and checking your students online

profiles of information that may be unsafe.

SCREEN TIME SEMINAR Is All Screen Time Equal? Join us for a seminar as Dr Aaron Frost and Dr Tania McMahon present from an anecdotal, clinical and a research perspective to help parents make sense of what we currently know and help them make informed choices about their kids access to technology. Please see flyer in Community news.

JUNIOR SPORTS DAY It’s still a couple of weeks away but Week 7 sees children from Prep to Year 3 participate in Junior Sports

Day. This is a whole day event that will take place on Thursday 25 August. Students are encouraged to wear house colours on this day and I will provide a programme of events closer to the date.

DISTRICT ATHLETICS Something that is a little closer is the participation of students at district athletics. We have a team of 34 Robertson students participating over the two days. Friday 29 July and Tuesday 2 August will see children in the 10 -12 years age group

participate in this event – Go Robertson!

GALA DAY Semester 2 Gala Day sports are coming up. Students should have brought home a note regarding details for this including approximate cost for them to be involved. The school is in the process of confirming costs as there are some changes compared to the same period last year. I ask if parents can return permission notes as soon as possible, but understand the office is unable to accept payment of any sort until the costs have been finalized.

P & C News

SPRING FEST IS ON – 2 SEPTEMBER Last year our school community rallied together to produce our

wonderful Spring Fest filled with delicious cakes, beautiful craft, yummy food and raffles to be won. This year, lots of things will be different - our raffles, entertainment and food will all have a big overhaul and there will be lots more fun so make sure you don’t miss it!!! Put it

in your diary today – 2 September is the time for fun.

Spring Fest is about bringing the community together and teaching our children that we are a community and a part of one big family.

I was involved in Spring Fest last year and it was a very successful team effort, however, this year will be bigger and better with more food options and entertainment.

Who likes coffee? This year we have a brilliant barista making great coffee provided by Abrisca and she will also be making great baby chino’s for the kids such Dino Chino’s. How exciting for the little ones, getting their frothy milk with a chocolatey dinosaur stamp on it or how about a hot chocolate with a rocky road or mint flavouring? YUM!

Spring Fest is only 5 weeks away from THIS Friday and we are working behind the scenes to bring it all together but the Spring Fest works on volunteers and I am asking for YOUR help.

If you could spare just one hour it would assist us in managing the activities for the night. We all want to spend time with our families so if we all just help a little, no one has to help a lot.
