Endow: Study Group for Women

Endow is a Catholic educational program that brings wom-en together to discover their God-given dignity and femi-ninity through the richness and authenticity of Catholic teaching. In a small group setting, we will gather as women to connect in faith and friendship, as well as to pray, study, and learn more about the teachings of the Church. The first study group will be on Pope Saint John Paul II’s Letter to Women, which speaks to the special role women play in transforming the family, the Church, and the world. We will meet every other Satur-day morning at 8:30 am (or immediately following the 8:00am Mass) in the Parish Center Meeting Room begin-ning on Saturday, February 6, 2016. The registration fee, which includes all the materials you will need for this study, is $19.95, plus shipping costs. No homework is re-quired – you just have to show up! To register, or for more information about the Endow group at Saint Bridget, con-tact Rhoda Bevc at (434) 284-1940 or [email protected].

Human Concerns Announcements - Special Request

BeFriender Ministry trains for ‘listening presence’ There comes a time in most journeys when having a friend close at hand is one of life’s grandest treasures. Aristotle put it simply - a friend, he said, is a single soul inhabiting two bodies. But sometimes even a close friend can’t completely share the experiences of those reaching out for help or understanding. But a program called BeFriender Ministries - A Listening Presence could do just that. St. Bridget Church is putting to use the BeFriender Ministry that uses the qualities of friend-ship to lend an ear to those who need to be heard. This March, parishioners will begin a 20 hour training to become BeFriender Ministers in our faith community. After their training, the new BeFriender Ministers will begin minis-tering to our parishioners. This is an intentional listening ministry of the church. People who become BeFrienders are not professional counselors, not social workers and they’re not doing the work that would be done by social service agencies. What they are doing is listening - actively and compassionately - to those who need com-panionship, who need to share the experiences that may be challenging, troubling or com-plicating their lives. This ministry is not in place of but in addition to any professional help or services the person might need. It’s really what church is all about. Church in-volves believers coming together to be supportive of one another. By being an active, con-fidential and nonjudgmental listener, a BeFriender allows the person who is suffering or in need of some companionship a chance to tell their story. Generally, when you go to a professional - and this isn’t intended to demean them at all - the professional deals with the immediacy of whatever falls into their area of expertise. BeFriending is really a kind of peer ministry. A mother talking to another mother about the loss of a child is different than a mother talking to a professional. BeFrienders may often be on the listening end of stories that would otherwise go untold - and when that story goes untold, people often carry the burden by themselves. BeFrienders may not necessarily be reaching people in need but people experiencing life. The program, now present in 39 states, has four “foundational principles. They are: • Acknowledging God’s presence. • Active listening. Just listening to someone’s story is a rare commodity these days. There’s a healing power in telling one’s story, and BeFrienders learn the value of listening skills. • Caring, not curing. BeFrienders are a living reminder of God’s love. As companions, BeFrienders give those they Befriend the chance to recognize, value and use their own God-given, Spirit-led wisdom. • Nonjudgmental presence. Respect and empathy allow BeFrienders to listen and re-spond to individual stories without passing judgment. The nice thing about BeFrienders is that a lot of people are uncomfortable with sharing personal things with close friends or family. This provides a way to talk in complete confi-dentiality with someone who is willing to listen and has been trained in active listening. Which means they will help draw the story out and help the person find the meaning of it. This is your last chance to be a part of the upcoming training. Whether you would like to be a BeFriender or are in need of one contact Paul Amrhein at 282.9511 x311 or [email protected] - Thank you!

Please consider giving the gift of life by donating blood. Last drive 22 units were collected - a record for St. Bridget Parish! Thank you! There is no substitute for human blood and Virginia Blood Services needs your help in maintaining the blood supply through this winter. St. Bridget Blood
