During Module 2, we will introduce several electronic tools and resources. In each case, we will detail the tool or resource, share ideas and examples of how the tool/resource can be used in the ELA classroom, and we will explore how to use the tool/resource with ease.

2.1 Socrative.com- this free, web resource allows teachers to create pre-made, electronic assessments to check for understanding. Students are able to use their phones to text in an answer to the teachers short answer or multiple choice questions, and the teacher can view each students response and analyze data.

2.2 TodaysMeet.com- this free resource is a web-based meeting place where students can post short comments or questions on a teacher-created site. Anyone with the site website can post, thereby allowing students to both ask and answer questions from their peers.

2.3 SurveyMonkey.com- Survey Monkey is a widely-known free web resource that is famous for conducting surveys. We will show teachers how to use Survey Monkey to create forms to collect and organize information, rather than simply collecting data.

2.4 NoRedInk.com- This resource is a free website for students to complete grammar practice electronically. The unique part of this website is that it allows students to choose particular hobbies or interests, and the practice sentences and passages are about their chosen interests. We will familiarize teachers with this website, and we will help facilitate the implementation of this program with their individual students.

Module 2: Instructional Objectives Conduct informal checks for understanding by preparing and employing

short electronic assessments via Socrative.com. Employ TodaysMeet.com as a means of facilitating conversation about a

relevant topic. Develop forms and surveys via SurveyMonkey.com that collect

information and go beyond data retrieval. Facilitate the students use of NoRedInk.com as a tool for individualized

grammar instruction. Execute GrammarByte.com as a method of whole-class grammar

    instruction.

2.1 Socrative.com This free, web resource allows teachers to create pre-made, electronic assessments to check for understanding. Students are able to use their phones to text in an answer to the teachers short answer or multiple choice questions, and the teacher can view each students response and analyze data. In this module, teachers will get acquainted with the programs interface and begin to set-up electronic assessments for student-use.

    Page 7

    8) When creating a Multiple Choice quiz, be sure to select the correct answer and to offer an explanation of the correct answer. There is no limit on the number of questions you may include in a quiz; however, a relatively short quiz, with less than ten questions, is recommended. Upon finishing creating your quiz questions, click SAVE at the bottom of the screen.

    9) After saving your quiz, click continue.

  • M o d u l e 2 : P a p e r l e s s I n - C l a s s A c t i v i t i e s

    Page 8

    10) After saving your quiz and viewing you will return to the Main Screen. Here, you can add questions to an existing quiz or create new quizzes or exit tickets. This is also where you will initiate a quiz for students to take by clicking Start Quiz.

    11) When initiating a quiz for students to take, there are some logistical decisions to be made. Selecting Student Paced Quiz allows students to click through all of the questions as quickly as they want. Teacher Paced Quiz grants a teacher control of when each question is released.

  • M o d u l e 2 : P a p e r l e s s I n - C l a s s A c t i v i t i e s

    12) Below is an example of the screen a teacher will see when students are joining the room by entering the room number when they log in to socrative.com.

    13) Once students are finished with the quiz, the teacher will click End Activity at the bottom of the Live Results page. The teacher will then have access to different report type. These reports match students names with their responses on the quiz.

Conclusion: Socrative.com is an easy, free tool that requires very little set up. Students and teachers will benefit from the instant checks for understanding, and the novelty of using a mobile device will undoubtedly add a new element to a classroom environment.

2.2 TodaysMeet.com This free resource is a web-based meeting place where students can post short comments or questions on a teacher-created site. Anyone with the site website can post, thereby allowing students to both ask and answer questions from their peers. This site works on desktops with internet connection, as well as on mobile devices with internet connections.

In this module, teachers will learn to employ TodaysMeet.com as a means of facilitating conversation about a relevant topic.

    1) Begin by visiting www.todaysmeet.com. There is no registration or log-on information required.

  • M o d u l e 2 : P a p e r l e s s I n - C l a s s A c t i v i t i e s

    2) Determine the name of your Room. We suggest using something unique to

your classroom environment, but choose something that is easy for your students to spell. Then, choose the length of time that your room will be available. Once youve named your room and determined the duration, click Create your Room at the bottom of the screen.

  • M o d u l e 2 : P a p e r l e s s I n - C l a s s A c t i v i t i e s

    Page 12

    3) After you have created your room, your rooms URL becomes available and will remain available for the length of time you determined. The URL combines www.todaysmeet.com/ with whatever you named your room. In the example above, students will access this room by visiting www.todaysmeet.com/Rickard-EHS. Below is a screen shot of what students will see when they access the rooms URL.

    Conclusion:

Participating in a Todays Meet room is extremely easy. Students will type their name to join, and then they have the capabilities to type anything in the room. There are no limitations on the number of students in one room, so you can choose to have one room that houses the conversations of all students throughout the day, regardless of the class period. Or, you can decide to make different rooms for each class period. Use it to ask specific questions, or just use it as a back channel for students to hold relevant conversations. The choice is yours, and set-up is quick!
