[email protected] T. +44 (0)20 7433 0840 About the Lecture Dr Yahia will give an overview on the prohibition of usury in the Abrahamic Faiths, including the evolution of the prohibition from the time of Moses when it was applied to help eradicate slavery, to agrarian cultures where money was used to amass land through confiscation, up to the development of the joint venture concept as a tool for raising capital among Muslim traders. Based on the success at LARIBA Dr Yahia will explain: The discipline of using precious metals and staple food commodities as tools for calibrating value (commodity indexation) which laid the foundation for one of the earliest monetary disciplines in history The reliance on markets to define real value in terms of reference commodities. Use of the commodity indexation discipline to provide an early warning signal of house price declines in the US after 2005, and the later decline in gold and oil prices. The added-value of LARIBA’s financing model, including a contrast with the kinds of financing model that do not add value. The experience at LARIBA in transforming a conventional bank into a riba-free bank. About the Speaker Dr. Yahia Abdul-Rahman is the Chairman and CEO of LARIBA – Bank of Whittier in the United States. He is known as the Father of Islamic banking in North America, having started LARIBA in 1987, the country's first full service Riba-Free National Bank. He was born in Cairo and came to the USA in 1968, obtaining a Ph.D in Chemical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin and an MA in International Finance at the University of Texas. Dr. Yahia spent 18 years in the investment banking industry with CitiGroup and Smith Barney where he managed the first ever Shariah-compliant stock portfolio. Under his leadership, LARIBA was the first organisation to issue Islamic asset-based mortgage bonds in the US with Fannie Mae. His group started banks in Houston, Texas (1982) and LARIBA Bank of Kazakhstan (1998). Yahia’s most recent book is The Art of Islamic Banking and Finance and an expanded second edition has now been published. Handling non-performing loans in a riba-free bank.
