Royal Thai Cuisine with a heavenly view

A well-established restaurant in Phuket, Baan Rim Pa is famous for its unique views and exquisite Royal Thai cuisine. If you only dine out one time in Phuket, this is the place you must go.

It’s best to arrive a little bit early for dinner to ensure that you won’t miss a precious moment from one of the most scenic sunset spots in Phuket. Perched on a cliff just over the sea, Baan Rim Pa offers you the most magnificent coastal view of Patong.

Past the main dining room to the new seating area of the restaurant downstairs, we enjoyed drinks alongside the beauty

of nature and watched the sun moving across the skyline. A glass of Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect start to the fine dining that awaits you at Baan Rim Pa. Allow your senses to absorb the alluring melody of the waves, the sea breeze, cicada rhythms, and light piano tunes.

Try Goong Lai Sarong, deep-fried fresh prawns rolled with fine homemade vermicelli. The crispness of the noodles and flavourful firm texture of prawns is very appetizing when paired with plum sauce. Then move to the delicious Hmee Grob Padd Khie Mao, fried crispy noodles with a little bowl of spicy minced pork and balsam leaf.

Order Panaeng Ped if you would like to discover the delight of a flavour explosion. A mouthful of duck in thick creamy curry sauce is even more tantalizing with a bit of lychee. The combination of curried duck and lychee makes every bite a joyful journey. The dish is slightly sweet and not too spicy for those who fear the hot reputation of Thai curry.

For another unique experience, Poo Paad Poang Gari or crab stir-fried with curry powder, could be an excellent option. The dish is served with a stylish and appetizing look; and the crabs are prepared so they are not difficult to eat. Fresh, mouth-watering

and with a mild and exclusive flair, this is one seafood dish you should not miss.

For a sweet ending, choose a platter of fresh seasonal fruits. Alternatively, try water chestnuts served with sweet coconut milk, called Tab Tim Grob. This classic dessert is very popular among Thais.

Remember, you can always ask for the spiciness of each dish to be adjusted to your preference. Reservations are recommended during high and peak seasons.

For your information, Baan Rim Pa is one of the best places to watch Patong’s New Year’s Eve fireworks.

If you’re strolling around Patong Beach, it’s entirely possible that you will get hungry at some point and be confused by the many choices available. It’s always tough to make a decision with so many superb restaurants in one area but there is one place that never fails to impress.

Walk along Taweewongse Road to the north towards Kalim Bay. Look to your left and you’ll find an Impiana’s Thai restaurant named 3 Spices. This is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing atmosphere and authentic Thai cuisine.

Add spice to your dining

3 Spices offers an open-air dining area created to serve up to 80 customers. The design and decoration is quite simple and clean, providing a peaceful ambience. The restaurant is famous among diners for popular Thai dishes with no compromise to traditional taste and a focus on three concepts of ‘fast, fine and tasty’.

As the flavours are kept traditional, you’ll want to let the staff know the level of spiciness you prefer. The restaurant boasts freshness of ingredients and real homemade curry pastes that make the dishes more genuine in appearance, flavour and aroma.

You may want to start with an order of Batat Lom, prawns wrapped in pastry and deep fried; or perhaps begin with a simple papaya salad. For a main dish, recommendations include Tom Yum Goong, a famous Thai sour and spicy soup that uses real shrimp stock to guarantee the great taste of the soup.

If you would like to surprise your taste buds, order Steamed Sea Bass with Bird’s Chilli and Lime Sauce to go with fragrant jasmine rice. Stir-fried Chicken with Mushrooms and Roasted Cashew Nuts is also a good choice if you want something a little less spicy.

Do not forget Mango with Sticky Rice for dessert. The dish is a perfect choice as the full flavour of ripe golden mango and the creamy sticky rice specially prepared on a daily basis adds just the right amount of sweetness to a meal. Ice cream is also a good choice on a hot night.

3 Spices also serves quick tasty rice and noodle dishes and various international cuisine favourites. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from 11:00am till midnight daily.

Tucked inside the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa, Ocean Beach Club provides an unpretentious environment while extending a premier dining experience.

It takes a fresh approach with an ocean inspired immersion of modern concepts to complement a trendy beach club scene. There are plenty of excellent seats with views of the setting sun graced by swaying palm trees. The main dining area holds up to 40 guests, while the ‘destination’ bar has 10 counter seats plus 90 sun-loungers across the pool deck and the sand for use during the day.

A visit at night never disappoints as you enter a haven imbued with an exquisitely tropical landscape, fresh scents, soothing music and

enticing lighting. This luscious venue is also ideally suited for weddings, Valentine’s Day dinners, theme nights (such as a Full Moon party) and conference events.

Still relaxing enough for a light lunch or a snack at the poolside, Ocean Beach Club is also a favourite spot for romantic dinners with the panoramic view of Karon becach. The restaurant offers separate day and night menus, with the daytime menu featuring lighter food designed to be the best for swimming and sitting poolside on a hot day.

The beverage menu evolves throughout the day – featuring fruit juices, frappés, shakes, and creative iced teas, draught beer, and some of the finest cocktails on the island

from early afternoon. You’re sure to feel the reality of being on a tropical island with the cocktails served here under the careful concept of quality of ingredients, professional preparation and simple presentation. Vodkas, gins and rums are the key spirits used, combined with high quality fruits, herbs and spices.

Dinner offers a varied selection of Western upscale meals and hearty barbeque choices, as well as a few traditional Thai delights. The freestanding BBQ station is an inspiration to the senses with Asian and Mediterranean oversized skewers of meat, seafood and vegetarian specialties. Kids can try a number of children’s speciality dishes including burgers, sandwiches and salads.

One of the chef’s recommendations is the Australian Angus Beef Carpaccio, prepared simply to retain all the best features of this superb cut. The beef is light and delicious. If you want a twist on surf & turf, try the Beef Tenderloin & Confit of Salmon with crab meat polenta plus soy and shiitake mushroom glaze. Well presented, the beef has a tender and delicate texture that retains a strong flavour beautifully complemented by the crab meat polenta and salmon.

Don’t forget to add a little sweetness to your meal with a dessert like the Pistachio Mousse, Grand Marnier sorbet, or sake and passion fruit jelly. So make your way to Ocean Beach Club today!

[Restaurant Review] Dec 11 - Jan 12East 88 Beach Lounge | Serenity Resort & Residences | Rawai | Tel. 076 371 900 | www.serenityphuket.com

Probably one of the coolest spots in south Phuket, East 88 Beach Lounge at Serenity Resort is a beachfront pool lounge you won’t forget. Only 2 kilometres south of Chalong Circle towards Rawai, turn left at the first traffic light or just follow the lady in the pool... Walk straight from the parking lot to the pool’s pristine blue water contrasted against a panorama of the Andaman Sea.

This chic bar is designed completely open-air for poolside dining, a little crazy partying and all fun functions. A clean, white concept in décor presents a neat look that is suitable for family evenings as well as late-night transformations into a hip hangout and trendy drinking den. During the high season, it’s a good idea to get here early as the outdoor patio is a coveted

East 88 Beach Lounge Hip, happening and cool beach lounge

spot for eating while people-watching.

We arrived at the bar just before sunset to enjoy the breathtaking sea breeze and scenery. The silhouette of a sailboat at low tide with the brilliant colours cast by the sinking sun was like moving artwork. A friendly staff member walked us to large poolside cushions.

The atmosphere whets the appetite for a cold drink. We suggest East 88’s signature cocktail, Serenity, to sooth the spirit of a hard-core beach enthusiast. Chili Moon is another sexy and popular cocktail to try.

past sundown. Dishes are a unique medley of Western and Thai cuisines. You can tell the chefs here brainstormed to come up with the best 8 dishes in each category.

Just a quick breeze through the menu and I noticed that they have a number of quick and easy hearty dishes such as burgers. East 88 Beef Burger is a sumptuous hunk of beef with bacon and cornichons, onion, tomato and salad. The Italian selection includes some popular pizzas and pastas like Classico Spaghetti Carbonara.

If you’re more in the mood for a sizzling seafood dish, try the Grilled Tuna Steak. This cut of tuna is best grilled medium-rare to bring out the flavours of the fish. The sweet

and tangy marinade keeps everything moist and flavourful.

East 88 is not the kind of place where you want to get up and leave after dinner is finished. There are events throughout the week as the bar takes great pride in its relaxed environment.

For example, Tuesday is Fire & Ice night, when two elements are combined into a steaming night where hot bodies get their groove on while live DJs spin soulful house music. If you are a big fan of Jazz, there is a saxophonist every Thursday. A themed party is held every first Friday of the month. To be sure you won’t miss any upcoming events, it’s best to add east88beachlounge to your Facebook.

[Restaurant Review] Dec 11 - Jan 12Bi l l Bent ley Pub | Tur t le V i l lage | Mai Khao | Te l . 076 314 818

From your first pint of Guinness by the bartender who knows the methodology of ‘perfect pouring’, to all the personal touches by the young enthusiastic British pub manager – Bill Bentley Pub captures all the essences of a traditional English pub.

Proudly presented as the only English pub on the north of the island, Bill Bentley is located on the 2nd floor of Turtle Village near Anantara Resort. The pub embraces all the characteristics of an archetypal English pub, including a spacious interior, polished wooden construction throughout, intimate dining booths and large leather sofas.

This is what I love about English pubs! They are renowned for a homey vibe with

warmth and fun, serving up tasty food for everyone. Feel comfortable bringing the kids here as there is an exclusive wing dedicated to sport and games including a pool table, dart board, table football and a very unique shuffle board.

Apart from regular live music performances, there are also sports-viewing events in front of the massive HD Screen. This super-sized pub even has two outdoor balconies for smokers.

We arrived early in the evening and the pub was already bustling with locals and some tourist families. The waitresses were smiling and joking with customers, creating the comfortable feeling of relaxing in a friend’s

living room. It is said that the word ‘pub’ is derived from ‘public house’, explaining the crucial tenet of what makes a pub the centre of a community.

Like anywhere in the world, a visit to an English pub is highlighted by superb food and drinks. Bill Bentley scores big points with a large menu including favourite British pub fare like snacks, soups, steaks, burgers (real Western deal), salads, a selection of influences from world travels and of course, some decent Thai dishes.

We had the baby back ribs and loved them! The ribs come with BBQ beans, coleslaw and homemade chunky chips. We were told that the chef slowly roasts and barbeques

the meaty ribs with no advanced fuss; therefore, this dish wins praises from most of the guests. The pub sells over 500kg of ribs a month!

There is a vast choice when it comes to drinks: Guinness is on draft, bottled beers, ciders and Ale, as well as mixed drinks and select wines are all part of the selection. There are also plenty of after-dinner coffee liquors and spirits to choose from.

Prices are pretty reasonable especially considering the portions of food and good beer. If you’re staying around Mai Khao and searching for a festive mood, this is an easy place to drop in for lunch or for a leisurely dinner.

[Restaurant Review] Dec 11 - Jan 12S i lk Phuket | Andara Resor t | Kamala Beach | Te l . 076 338 777 | www.andaras i lk . com

Silk has always been a favourite Thai restaurant among tourists and local residents. Now moved to a new location at Andara Resort on Kamala Beach, Silk’s reputation is unchanged and it remains one of the places everyone should visit when looking for an exceptional dining experience and great social scene.

The venue is a visual treat with its Asian influenced décor giving way to a number of lanterns hanging from the high ceiling, solid wood furniture brightened by tasteful colourful cushions and pillows that glow under perfect lighting, Buddha statues and artworks from Northern Thailand.

Silk’s exceptional dining scene

The stylish bar in the corner is inviting and open. The main dining rooms connect to an outside dining patio, the scenic pool area and pool bar. Floor-to-ceiling windows reveal a charming view of the turquoise Andaman Sea and the clear blue sky in the daytime; and also showcase the facets of a starlit night after dusk.

Start with the ‘special dish of the month’, which on our visit was the Pheuak Loy Naa. Ping-pong sized deep-fried taro balls stuffed with a dollop of minced seafood seasoned with curry paste provide a burst of unique tastes in your mouth. The crispy texture of the taro and the tender stuffing are a heavenly contrast given the zest of a

remarkably bold seafood sauce. This makes for a supreme starter.

The signature Maning Phuket is a long-time favourite of Silk’s returning guests. A healthy speciality, these spring rolls are stuffed with cucumber, carrot, yam-bean, lettuce, crushed cashew nut and roasted duck. They are served with tangy tamarind sesame sauce that gives a hint of spiciness.

Also be sure to try the Fried Herbal White Snapper with Pandan Leaves. A wide variety of Thai herbs such as ginger, shallots, kaffir lime leaves, chilli, lime and mint are used in careful portions to make the dish smell and taste incredible.

There’s plenty more on the menu to tantalize your taste buds time and time again on all future visits. Crab Curry with Coconut Milk served with Rice Vermicelli, Stir-Fried Crab with Black Pepper, and Chicken Massaman Curry are always at the top of the favourites list here.

Sweet endings include mango with sticky rice, chocolate mousse and various other international favourites – ask the staff for their daily recommendation. You’ll also find a great selection of Italian dishes and other international meals at Silk. The restaurant is open for all-day dining until late at night and offers free Wi-Fi internet access to patrons.

The restaurant is divided into two seating areas: the refreshing air-conditioned dining room for hot days and a charming outside patio overlooking the yacht moorings for those breezy afternoons. The atmosphere of Les Anges is warm and welcoming with classic colours and delicate patterns on the walls. Mosaic tile flooring and a wrought iron lamp are just a couple of the details

Sweet delights of Les Anges

inspired by the golden period of ancient Roman art.

Les Anges is a delightful combination of café, deli, patisserie, restaurant and bar. It serves French and international cuisines, as well as its famous homemade pastries and chocolates.

[Cover Story] Dec 11 - Jan 12Fusion food brings together the best elements of traditional cuisine for a healthy and delicious new trend.

The concept of ‘healthy food’ has been significant to our lives for many years. People were alerted to and realized some time ago the importance of the phrase ‘you are what you eat’ – forcing diners to think more about the advantages of each bite. This trend urges the development of food and benefits to diners in terms of more variety and increased pleasure from each dish.

Moreover, cooking has also evolved to be more health conscious and provide a wider range of fresh ingredients. Food is also more visually attractive and more creative, especially the garnishing – which seems to be an important part of the criteria diners use to make their decisions regarding meals.

Moreover, cooking has also evolved to be more health conscious and provide a wider range of fresh ingredients. Food is also more visually attractive and more creative, especially the garnishing – which seems to be an important part of the criteria diners use to make their decisions regarding meals.

There are many different healthy ingredients in each part of the world and it would be simply unfair if the great cuisines and ingredients were limited to one geographical region. At the same time, traditional cuisines with traditional ingredients may not be able to answer all of the needs and wants of a global society. This is the foundation of the creation of a new

Page 63: Restaurant Preview Vol.11 No.1

Vset Restaurant Sala Bua

cuisine called ‘fusion food’ with its concept nestled in pleasing more diners.

Fusion food is made from a combination of at least two cuisines or cookery forms which go into a single dining experience. The objective is to present some excitement to diners by giving a traditional dish a new look while still aiming to entice them to dare to try it by offering some familiar ingredients.

Fusion is also considered a smart way to upgrade local cuisine to an international level with the perfect mix and match of great dietary value ingredients that will satisfy a wider group of diners. Fusion food is the perfect answer for health conscious groups as the chef has the freedom to pick only the best ingredients when adapting the original formula.

Fusion food is the perfect choice for a young generation looking for new experiences and excitement in dining.

Fusion food is a great combination of both art and science, which is a good reason to make it very well known and quickly accepted globally. It does not just offer palate pleasure in a different way but also allows chefs to express their creativity. Chefs have freedom in making something new and unique by combining the best elements of traditional favorites.

Some fine examples of Thai and other Western cuisines that have been fused and are readily available include: Italian pizza topped with stir-fried chicken; pork with chili and basil; tom yum salmon soup for anyone trying to avoid cholesterol from prawns or allergic to prawns; spaghetti deep-fried with salted fish; and mieng tuna, a bite of which consists of cubed lemon, shallots, ginger, chili, lettuce and tuna served with a special sweet sauce.

Another reason fusion food is popular is

the chic and stylish presentation of dishes. The look and feel of each fusion dish attracts the attention of diners with slight differences that make them unique. The beautiful presentation complementing the dietary value of a dish can be used to create a signature for each chef whilst enhancing benefits to diners.

Fusion food is the perfect choice for a young generation looking for new experiences and excitement in dining. Restaurants where fusion food is served also differentiate themselves from the others with exclusive décor easily distinguished by diners. Interior design of venues is usually based around the types of fusion menus available.

It is not difficult to find a good fusion food restaurant in Phuket. There are choices ranking from the indigenous little ones to international standard fine dining venues. Don’t worry that the fusion food devalues its original cuisines. This modern cuisine isn’t meant as a replacement for the traditional dishes it melds together. Fusion food is simply another choice for diners who are looking to broaden dining experiences and it is a tool to ease foreigners into local cuisines.
