Bake & Flame by Twinpalms

Bakeryand

Rotisserie

Bake and Flame aren’t new dining venues but more precisely good old friends for those who prefer ease and quality in everyday life. Both Bake and Flame are located in the same area near the entrance to Phuket’s five-star resorts complex Laguna. They are easily spotted at the junction on way to Layan Beach.

Open since March 2010, Bake by Twinpalms insists on premium quality serving a wide selection of baked goods such as ciabatta, bread loaves, pistolet, buns, croissants and quiches

Freshness is guaranteed as all items are baked daily

as well as pastries, macaroons, chocolates and much more. Freshness is guaranteed as all items are baked daily. The bakery also offers all-day breakfast from 7am to 5pm. All items are available for takeaway; alternatively, enjoy them in the air-conditioned dining room or stylish outside seating area. Bake is open daily from 7am to 10pm.

Coffee aficionados will not want to miss Bake’s newly introduced Akha coffee. Coffee beans grown in Chiang Rai are freshly roasted to ensure the utmost savory espresso. Bake also offers a range of teas, juice, smoothies, wine and beer.

Flame is just a few steps away from Bake. This succulent venue features an open kitchen coupled with a design that allows guests a view of the chef preparing orders. It is the island’s first garden rotisserie serving up a range of roasts. You’ll want to try all four styles of roasted chicken served with different dipping sauces including French, Thai Spicy,

Portuguese Piri Piri and Indian. Baby pork ribs served with salad and French fries is also an excellent choice. There are also kebabs and wraps with chicken, beef or lamb – ideal for a quick takeaway.

Flame’s Pizza Quattro Formaggi is highly recommended for cheese lovers. The restaurant’s wood fire oven makes the pizza powerfully aromatic and gives it an authentic flavor. Freshly made pizza dough, quality ingredients for toppings plus the chef’s own talents all come together for the perfect traditional pizzas. Delivery service within a 5km radius is available. Flame is open daily from 10am to 10pm.

Tender & Tail Rock is an excellent choice: Australian beef tenderloin and tail of rock lobster served with fresh and sun-dried tomatoes, sweet tomatoes, red wine and passion cream sauce.

Dining with a view at

the Sky LoungeThe Sky Lounge at Kee Resort & Spa provides the ultimate escape from the busy streets of Patong Beach with a spectacular view and the savory cuisine to match. Just a short walk through Kee Plaza and a glass elevator ride up to the 7th floor takes you to the Sky Lounge. Perched atop the hotel, this open-air rooftop lounge provides an incredible 360-degree panorama that will take your breath away.

Reach for the clouds in this sophisticated dining area, comprised of two-storey seating. Taking the side staircase to the top dining area allows you to see the silhouette of the glamorous cocktail party below while enjoying the music in the background.

The bar is on the lower floor surrounded by comfortable seating. The rotating pink, blue and golden lights of the counter set

the atmosphere after the brilliant oranges of the sunset meld into the city lights. Alternatively, the formal dining room is comfortably cool with air-conditioning and highlighted by a large wine cellar.

Sit yourself down on an oversized couch, marvel at the stunning Patong Bay and order a cocktail while you decide what to eat. The menu covers Thai, international, pizza and the latest surf & turf. Tender & Tail Rock is an excellent choice: Australian beef tenderloin and tail of rock lobster served with fresh and sun-dried tomatoes, sweet tomatoes, red wine and passion cream sauce. The lobster was rich and the beef filet was tender and a little tangy from the sauce enhancing the perfectly beefy flavor.

Another must try is the Rip & Mussel Roller. It’s a chef’s special dish: rib eye steak wrapped with sliced bacon accompanied by New Zealand mussels served with potatoes, vegetables and a spicy pepper sauce.

If you like fish, then the Salmon & Bass is strongly recommended. Savor fillets of salmon and sea bass served with sweet potatoes and a sensational assortment of flavors including blue cheese plus a big slice of lemon. The restaurant gets a thumbs up for the wonderful look, health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids and the overall delicious flavors.

The cuisine and the ambience are sensational. Premium drinks are served in sumptuous comfort in a sensual, friendly and romantic arena. Contemplate the heavens and stargaze with perfect contentment at the Sky Lounge. Doors are open 5:30pm to midnight.

Another fabulous starter is the soft shell crab served with cucumber salad. It offers up a creative presentation that will have you coming back for more. Try the snow fish topped with leek foam served with foie gras, spinach and tomato caviar as a main dish. Careful skill and attention to detail goes into this dish with the perfect blend of ingredients to complement the fresh snow fish. The shiny red caviar adds a natural sexy flush and little sweet-sour tang. RE KÁ TA is open 11am to midnight daily.

RE KÁ TA of the Boathouse in Kata Beach exudes the theme of grandeur, tropical charm and excitement of Asia’s biggest regatta. Many boating enthusiasts have passed through these doors to revel in the paradise of clean lines, sky and sea, food and drink.

This beach club features an open-air beach patio dining area with white dining tables and a large curved counter bar. Huge couches are great for lounging around the free-form pool. The white and blue décor makes for a chic appearance that converts from upscale beachfront restaurant during the day to hot club at night. Lamps with changing lighting alongside the pool are invigorating.

RE KÁ TA’s menu matches its lavish décor. A team of dedicated chefs serve a range of international cuisine and seafood. The Seafood Platter showcases some of the freshest offerings with a large plate of grilled lobsters, crabs, prawns, mussels and golden crispy squid served with Thai style dipping sauce. The chicken meat is tender and juicy while the spices make it delicious and tantalizingly aromatic.

Mutton Rogan Josh is mutton cooked with India’s most intensely hot and fragrant spices. It comes in a beautiful red color; and is as thick and undoubtedly rich in flavors as it looks. Mutton Rogan Josh is generally accepted as one of the most delectable Kashmiri dishes and it should be at the top of your list.

Vegetarians will love Dal Tadka. This dish is made of lentils with onions, tomatoes and a lot of spices resulting in a creamy, slightly spicy stew that promotes a good source of proteins with no meat. You can enjoy it with choices of roti, naan or rice.

Choose whether to have steamed Basmati rice called Saada Chawal, or an aromatic and delicious medley of rice, assorted vegetables and spices called Vegetable Pulao to go with curries. The pulao is recommended for children especially as it is healthier and seems tastier.

Save room for dessert! Gulab jamun and Rasgulla are both fine choices. They may look similar to the untrained eye but are quite unique. Gulab jamun is a

traditional Indian dessert. The brownish spongy milky balls (Khoya) are soaked in warm rose scented syrup. They are surprisingly soft and fluffy with a special sweetness. Rasgulla is white and served chilled. It is soft and juicy but has a more chewy texture compared to Gulab jamun. Both are worth a try!

Baluchi is well known among Indian communities in Phuket as a restaurant that can be trusted for genuine Indian tastes. The ingredients and spices used are imported from India. You won’t find a better Indian restaurant!

It’s hard to believe but bugs can make for a great snack. Many Thais enjoy deep-fried insects as part of a meal or as a tasty little treat. Though eating insects originated from a small group of poor people living in the northeastern part of Thailand, it has become more popular among Thais in the other parts of the Kingdom. Once food for the low income classes, now deep-fried insects are a novelty snack for middle class or hi-so people who love the unique textures and tastes.

Snacks:

What kind of insects do people eat? Although there are millions of species of insects on the planet, not many are edible and even fewer are popular. Most frequently eaten and easily found at street venders throughout Thailand are delicacies such as crickets, grasshoppers, water beetles, scorpions, bamboo worms, silk larvae and ant eggs.

How are insects prepared for human consumption and pleasure? Insects are typically deep-fried in oil in a wok and displayed on trays. After you place your order, the food vendor will spray a little bit of soy sauce and pepper over your selection.

If you’re wondering what insects taste like, there’s only one way to find out! Most of the deep-fried insects such as

crickets, grasshopper and water beetles are crispy; meanwhile bamboo worms and silk larvae are crunchy outside and creamy inside. Yum!

Do these bug snacks contain nutrients? Though the thought of eating insects may appear disgusting to some, insects are a good source of protein and calcium with few calories. There is awareness on an international level leading to discussions on the possibility of insects as a sustainable source of protein as one solution to the looming food crisis.

Are you daring enough to give insects a try? Deep-fried insects are relatively inexpensive, so don’t be afraid to sample a few at the local market. The prices vary but mostly fall into the 20-40 baht range for a bag. Begin with worms or grasshoppers before moving to the higher levels of ‘difficulty’. Soy sauce and pepper help a lot. Don’t be scared!

In Phuket, you can find a roadside stall selling insect snacks at Saphan Hin Public Park near the Tin Mining Circle in the evening and another one at the weekend market known as Talaad Tai Rod Naka in Phuket town, as well as at the weekend markets around the island. There are also some at the temple fairs held in different places throughout the island year round. You’ll soon be munching on these great snack bites!
