PARTNERSHIPPartnership with English architect Richard Rogers.1970-1978. Piano and Rogers jointly designed many important buildings in Italy and Europe.

RICHARD ROGERS

Page 5: Renzo Piano

Piano explains his views of architecture as a "contaminated art," one in which the artist must contend with such issues as people in power, time, schedule, and technical problems.

He believes that architecture should not be a socially isolated practice but one that coexists with other disciplines such as science, technology, sociology, and anthropology.

On a more spiritual level, he describes architecture as the "construction of emotions with space," whereby buildings should become a focus for social encounters, offering the public an opportunity for contemplation, silence, and dialogue.

As a revealing personal and professional portrait, Renzo Piano brings together many of his closest collaborators-architects, engineers, and maquette-makers-to create a "real-life" portrait of an architect who sees his profession as a living thing, evolving with time and practice.RENZO PIANO:DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

The building site is a magical place where the art of construction takes place. He calls his office, the birthplace of his designs in respect to their final outcome. Ambivalent about tradition, he sees creation as a branch between past and future."

The green roof provides a natural habitat for wildlife and endangered species like the San Bruno butterfly.

Below the earthen mounds is a 4 story re-created rain forest.

Motorized porthole windows in the roof provide light and ventilation. A glass lobby and open exhibit rooms offer the sweeping natural views.

Renzo Piano's green roof cuts the building's energy needs by about a third. Masterpiece of green design that displays nature and is also part of nature.

Renzo piano gave the museum a roof made of rolling earth planted with more than 1.7 million plants from nine different native species.

Contractors recycled 90 percent of demolition debris from the old academy.

Much of the new building, including open office areas and the main exhibition space, is naturally ventilated.

Almost all of its public spaces have access to daylight and views.

And, the structure is surrounded by a glass-and-steel trellis that incorporates 60,000 photovoltaic (PV) cells, expected to generate 220 kwh of electricity annually.

A space has been left open between the three buildings that becomes the fourth and the open air concert hall.
