In 1857 the name waschanged to The New York TImes and. today, hasthe largest circulation of any local metropolitannewspaper in the United States. Only the The WallStreet Journal and USA Today exceed 'The Times'in overall sales.Since its foundation MThe T i m e s ~ has beenbased in many locations in New York City, mostnotably from 1904 on Broadway in Long AcreSquare. now Times Square. The Times Squareheadquarters is famous for the rolling headlinenews updates which are broadcasted to thestreet via a wraparound screen. The newspaperis part of The New York Times Company whosepresent chairman. Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr isa descendant of Adolph Ochs who acquired the

    newspaper in 1896. It was under the guidanceof Ochs that 'The Times' earned its intemationalreputation using the motto -All The News That'sFit To Print" as his byword for quality journalism.The new headquarters of The New York Times canbe found at 620 Eighth Avenue between West 40thand 41st Streets in Manhattan (Figs. 1-4). The highrise element of the development is a steel framed,curtain wall, 52 storey skyscraper shrouded bya ceramic sunscreen. The key aim of architect,Renzo Piano, was to construct a transparent,animated building. The facade is glazed with ultraclear, low iron glass. To integrate and anchor thetower to the street level. a Lobby Garden connectsthe tower to a 378 seat auditorium - The TimesCentre. The Lobby Garden is accessible to thepublic, visible from the streets and forms a living,verdant connection between 40th and 41st.

    The development, which was undertaken jointlyby The New York Times Company and Forest CityRatner Companies provides In excess of 730,000square feet of Grade A office accommodation andretail space.The design collaboration, between Renzo PianoBuilding Workshop of Genoa, Italy, and Manhattanarchitects FXFOWLE has delivered a building whichcombines advanced construction technologieswith the human touch. Elevator passengers Inputtheir destinations In the 11ft lobby pre-fllghtwhich allocates efficient, loglstlcal groupings ofpassengers to elevator cars.The Innovative, ceramic rod, solar shading systemeffectively reduces solar gain which allows theInner skin high transparency glazing to run fromfloor to ceiling. This strategy greatly increases theamount of natural light available to the work place.When combined with variable lighting levels, andan automatic shading system, energy savings of30% can be achieved on floors 2 to 27 (which areoccupied by the Times Company).

    RECESSED CORNEA ELEVATION WITH CONVENIENCE STAIR

    Additionally, the transparent walls of the towerprovide the occupants with dramatic, panoramicviews of the famous New York City skyline. Whenviewing the building from the outside, people canbe seen In the working environment and movingup and down the convenience staircases.This dynamism Is also evident In the moveabletype art. Installation In the tower lobby. Here digitaldisplay screens provide a progressive streamof current and historic New York Times content,redolent of the nearby Times Square Installation.Renzo Piano's guiding principles of transparencyand openness extends through to the structuralsteel frame (containing 70% recycled content).Columns, beams and ties are all visible to thebuilding's occupants (Fig. 5) providing visualinterest, and physical evidence of the skyscraper'sintegrity.
