DOG OBEDIENCEJoin us in one of our many dog obedience classes. Instructor Jennifer Schneider owns Pick of the Litter Dog Training, and is a certified Pet Dog Trainer. For more information visit pickofthelitterdogtraining.com.

All classes held at the Kent Memorial Park Building.

BASIC MANNERS We know that you are tired of your dog pulling on the leash, running off instead of coming to you, and jumping up on everyone. We have a plan to help you. Enroll in our results based, pain free, introductory dog training class, and your dog will learn to sit and stay, walk nicely on leash, come when you call, and lie down and relax. You will be shown how to use these behaviors in real life situations, with and without treats. Your dog will learn to socialize with other dogs calmly and sit to say hello to people. You will receive custom-ized solutions to help with the behavior problems you are having at home. The result will be a well trained dog that listens consistently, even when distracted by other things. For dogs 5 months of age and older.

Kent Parks works to remove barriers so that all residents have an equal opportunity to enjoy the benefits of parks and recreation including:

• Individuals of all Ages and Genders • Individuals with Physical Disabilities • Members of Multicultural/Racial/Ethnic

Communities

• Individuals with Cognitive Disabilities

• Members of the LGBTQ Communities

• Members of Refugee/Immigrant Communities

• Individuals with Economic Challenges

WHY PARKS?

Most pet licenses cost $30…a lot less than a $125 fine. Fees for pet licensing do a lot of good:

Got a pet? Better get a license or face fines. It’s the law.

• Fund animal cruelty investigations and provide resources to address complaints about vicious animals.

• Treat injured and sick animals and find homes for them.

• Provide care for over 1,900 animals impounded each year at the Kent Animal Shelter.

• Roaming pets can get injured, but if they’re wearing license tags, they have a much better chance of being treated and reunited with you.

The City of Kent Human Services Division, housed under Parks, Recreation & Community Services invests approximately 2 million dollars annually to support agencies serving Kent-area residents.

Guided by the Human Services Master Plan priority areas, we work closely with agency partners, including public and non-profit organizations to help support Kent’s

most vulnerable residents. Human Services currently funds 39 agencies to deliver 54 programs to ensure the diverse needs of the community are addressed.

Housing and Human Services is also home to Kent Home Repair, a program available to help income-eligible City of Kent homeowners access free health and safety-related repairs. Qualified applicants

must own and occupy manufactured home (1976 and newer), single family home or a condo within the city limits of Kent for a minimum of one year and have homeowners insurance.

Our Resource Guides were created to help you navigate the array of social services available to you.

HUMAN SERVICES? HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED…?

Where can I grow fresh summer produce if I don’t have a yard?

How can I engage my kids in a safe and fun outdoor summer activity?

Where can I experience Nature’s raw power without leaving town?

How can I stretch my yearly grocery budget?

KENT COMMUNITY GARDEN - 64TH AVE S & W JAMES ST

The KENT COMMUNITY GARDEN is the single answer to all of these questions!

For just $45, rent a 20’ x 20’ (400 sq. ft.) plot and grow fresh vegetables and produce from April through October. It truly is farm-to-table when you’ve grown it yourself. And our garden is strictly organic* so you know exactly what is in your food. Gardeners who want less space can share their plot with a partner. We also have basic tools, hoses and wheelbarrows on site.

Get a burst of satisfaction when you bite down on a crisp lettuce leaf, tangy pepper piece, juicy tomato slice or sweet ear of corn that you grew yourself! Grow herbs, or can and preserve your produce for delicious flavor at every meal all year long. Since 1997 our gardeners have grown hundreds of pounds of fresh organic crops. What will you grow??

“Get Growing” at the Kent Community Garden and reap the rewards for yourself. You’ll be glad you did! Visit KentWA.gov/Garden for program details.

* Synthetic chemical pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and soil amendments are strictly prohibited. Also banned are invasive plants or vines, noxious or poisonous plants, and cannabis.

The Kent Community Garden is a collaborative effort between the City and the LDS Bishop’s Storehouse and Cannery of Kent, which owns the property. We recognize and appreciate their commitment to this program – Thank you!

PIANO BATTLEANDREAS KERN V. PAUL CIBISThis comedy-classic combat show is the brainchild of internationally accomplished pianists Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis. Piano Battle sees the duo go head-to-head on stage, charming and enchanting the audience with a variety of classical pieces. The two artists, with distinctly different performance styles, take turns

to perform pieces by composers such as Chopin, Liszt, and Debussy. They even improvise based on tunes the audience requests. This is serious classical music in a whole new context – and YOU decide the winner. Partial Funding from WESTAF, National Endowment for the Arts and Kent Parks Foundation.

Community Showcase – 12:00-6:00 p.m.

A variety of local performers will entertain the crowd with their talents. The Community Showcase will include the culmination of Speed Control’s “Rawk Camp” - a performance by youth 8-11 years old who have spent the week in a rock ‘n’ roll day camp. See page 10 for registration information.

Main Stage EntertainmentEntertainment on the Main Stage starts at noon with a Community Showcase featuring wonderful local talent. For a complete entertainment schedule, check KentArts.com in mid-April. Headliners include:

Speed Control – 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Straight out of -40 degrees in Canada’s Yukon, comes the power trio Speed Control with super tight, riff heavy, harmony rock. Steeped in a jazz and classical background they have turned to their true passion – rock n’ roll. Audiences say Speed Control is fresh, energetic, engaging and their music is reminiscent of rock bands of the late 60s and early 70s.

TBD – 8:00-9:30 p.m.

Fireworks now illegalThe sale, possession, and discharge of fireworks of any kind within the city is now prohibited, with the exception of a public display of fireworks authorized by permit issued by the city. Violators face a $250 dollar fine for possession of fireworks. The

City of Kent will work hard to consistently and fairly enforce the firework ordinance. The Splash Event, a large city permitted firework display at Lake Meridian, is an excellent alternative to discharging your fireworks.
