TUITION FEES, REFUNDS AND OPTIONS

Tuition fee as listed by course must be paid at the time of registration.

IF PAYING BY CHECK, PLEASE USE A SEPARATE CHECK FOR EACH COURSE.

The School Committee, through the Superintendent, reserves the right to cancel any and all courses that are undersubscribed. In the event of a cancellation, a full refund will be issued. We will refund your full tuition: 1. In the event that your course is cancelled due to low enrollment 2. If you withdraw from a class at least three business days (72 hours) in advance of

starting time. After this time, no refunds are given. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE WILL REFUNDS BE MADE TO STUDENTS AFTER A CLASS IS IN SESSION. Materials used in the class will be furnished by the student unless otherwise specified. All judgments of regulating, enrollments, continued enrollment, time, location and length of classes, as well as the class size, are the prerogatives of the School Committee via the Superintendent and such judgments are final when rendered.

CANCELLATIONS AND MAKE-UP CLASSES If the public schools are closed due to inclement weather during the daytime, there will be no Community Education classes. If weather conditions become severe late in the day, cancellation will be announced over WBZ (Ch. 4), WHDH (Ch. 7), WCVB (Ch. 5), and on radio at WBZ and WRKO. Classes will be rescheduled at a later date. If there is a delay in the opening of school, Community Education classes will be held.

Learn to make beautiful jewelry with an introduction to metalsmithing techniques! You will be guided step-by-step on how to solder, saw, file, hammer and polish in copper or brass. Create links to make earrings, use stamps to create pendants and learn wire wrap-ping, just to name a few examples. Silver is available for a small additional fee. Begin-ners are welcome; students with some previous experience will work on perfecting skills and learning new techniques. Most materials are included. Max: 6 Karenna is a professional jewelry artist who studied metalsmithing at RISD and has

taught locally for many years. Karenna Maraj Jewelry Collection is both a gallery

showcasing local artists and a classroom/studio space. It is located at 95 Trapelo Road,

Belmont.

NEW NANTUCKET BASKET B.H.S. Joan McCarthy Rm. 145 $200 Wed. 6:30-9:00 p.m. 6 wks. (Mar. 6 - Apr. 10, 2013

Join this class to make an oval Italian loaf basket (15”x 71/2”x 4”.) This basket will have a cherry base and rim. The cane staves will be cut and tapered. Students will begin working from a mold, inserting staves into the base and then weaving in the traditional Nantucket manner. A beautiful addition to one’s home, this all-purpose basket may be used in a dining setting for serving bread as well as a windowsill planter for three small pots of herbs. Max: 7

Ms. McCarthy is a member of many basketry guilds, including the Northeast Basketry

guild, Springfield guild, Lexington guild, and North Carolina Basketmakers Association.

Exam: algebra 1 and 2, geometry, statistics, probability, and word problems. The course provides basic test taking skills, including methods of speed and accuracy. Bring calculators on first day for a diagnostic exam. Fee includes the SAT review book. Max.: 20

Critical Reading and Writing sections. The critical reading review will include sentence completions and paragraph-length readings measuring extended reasoning, literal comprehension, and vocabulary in context. WRITING AND GRAMMAR FOR THE S.A.T. B.H.S Jeanne Widmer, Ed.D. Rm. 112 $90 Mon. 5:15 - 7:00 pm 5 wks. (Mar. 4, 2013-Apr. 22, 2013) No class 3/25 or 4/1 Do you need tips and strategies for some of the most daunting parts of the SAT: gram-mar, usage and writing the essay? In this class, you will identify your weaknesses, dis-cover those critical usage skills most tested in the multiple choice sections, and build strengths in tackling even the hardest questions quickly and accurately. You will also learn tricks in planning and writing the 25-minute essay, techniques which can be used in school and AP essay exams as well. You will build confidence by completing weekly in-class and at-home practice SAT sections. At the first class, students will purchase a copy of McGraw-Hill’s SAT, 2013 edition by Anestis and Black ($16). Max: 12 Jeanne Widmer Ed.D., Director of the Center for Living and Learning in Belmont, helps high school students

with many issues: preparing for the SAT, PSAT, AP and MCAS tests; organizing and writing theses; and learn-

ing study, organizational, writing and test taking skills. She has also successfully helped students in writing

their best college essays and selecting appropriate colleges.

S.A.T. II REVIEW - American History B.H.S. Kate McCabe Rm. 132 $130 Mon. 5:00-7:00 pm 10 wks. (Mar. 11-May 20, 2013)

This ten-week intensive course will be a study and review of American history from the age of exploration to the present. The thematic approach will include the social, cultural, economic, political and diplomatic history of the United States. Weekly readings, in addition to a liberal does of practice exams will be an integral component of the review. Several members of the Social Studies Department will conduct this review in their areas of expertise. Students should purchase the review book, Kaplan’s SAT Subject Test, US

History, 2013-2014, and bring it to the first class. S.A.T. II REVIEW - Biology Review B.H.S. Pat Partridge Rm. 216 $130 Thurs. 4:00-6:00 pm 10 wks. MAXIMIZE YOUR COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID B.H.S. Donald Anderson Rm. 108 $25/ind. Thur. 7 - 9 pm

This one night workshop is a must for all parents of college-bound high school students, especially freshmen and sophomores. We will demystify the college financial aid proc-ess and teach you how to access the more than $90 billion in financial aid dollars, mon-ies that are even available to “high income” families and business owners. Strategies will be presented that will help you protect your assets by maximizing your eligibility for aid, effectively lowering your college costs. You will learn the optimum time to set the strategies in place (Hint: best before the junior year) and why if you wait until the financial aid deadline to file your forms, you may miss out on the full amount of aid for which you qualify. You will also learn how to minimize the equity in your home. A free comprehensive analysis will be provided for those attending the class.

*** C.P.R., HEALTH *** AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION B.H.S. HEARTSAVER ® CPR AED Terry Grimm, R.N. Rm. 105 $40 Tues. 6:30 - 9:30 pm

1 wk. (Mar. 26, 2013) Heartsaver ® CPR AED is an extensive, three-hour course that covers adult/child CPR AED, adult/ child/infant choking, and infant CPR. By the end of the course, participants will be comfortable assessing a victim, checking for breathing, performing rescue breaths and chest compressions, and activating the emergency response system. This course also teaches participants how to help someone who is choking and how to re-spond in other emergency situations and how to use an AED. On completion of the class, participants receive their workbooks with wallet reminder cards; a keychain face shield. A course completion card good for two years will be mailed following the class. A completion certificate can be issued the night of the class if needed for proof of atten-dance until the official card arrives. Max.: 12 students. A $29 material fee must be

paid at registration. No registration fee for Belmont residents.

ESTATE PLANNING B.H.S. Judith Jarashow Rm. 103 $30 Tues. 7:00-9:00 pm 1 wk. (Mar. 26, 2013) Judith A. Jarashow, an estate planning attorney with over twenty-five years of experi-ence, will discuss the importance of having basic estate planning documents, including a Will, Durable Power of Attorney, Health Care Proxy, Living Will and HIPPA release. Participants will learn about probate administration and steps one can take to avoid hav-ing to probate property at death. There will be a brief overview of Massachusetts and Federal estate tax laws and various techniques that are available to optimize inheritances to the next generation. If time permits, Ms. Jarashow will discuss naming beneficiaries of retirement benefits and ways to allow “stretching out” the payments to beneficiaries to achieve the maximum deferral of income taxes. Attorney Jarashow has her own law practice specializing in estate planning and probate

and trust administration. She was recently named as one of “Boston’s 2012 Top Rated

Lawyers” in the area of estate planning.

UNDERSTANDING THE VALUE OF SOCIAL SECURITY B.H.S. Rick Fentin Rm. 103 $30 Tues. 7:00-9:00 pm 1 wk. (Mar. 12, 2013) This is a great workshop for baby boomers who now are eligible (or soon will be) for social security. The instructor will cover a range of aspects about benefits, e.g., how to calculate benefits, early benefits, survivor benefits, spousal benefits and divorce spousal benefits. Body Basics is a moderate intensity workout, set to music. The workout includes all three components of fitness: cardiovascular work, strength training, and flexibility. This class welcomes beginners as well as fitness enthusiasts. The instructor will provide guidance to participants who wish to increase or decrease the intensity of the workout. See results with the correct form, the right inten-sity, and the motivation of an enjoyable workout. Please bring a mat. We will discuss

appropriate weights at the first class. Max: 25

BODY STRONG: Butler Gym Strength Training Basics Judy Rice $65 Mon. 5:45 - 6:45 pm 6 wks. (Mar. 4, 2013 - Apr. 8, 2013 ) Strength training programs such as the Tufts Strong Woman Stay Young program can increase strength, bone density, and energy while decreasing the risk of osteoporosis, diabetes and obesity. This class is based on the Strong Women program. Class mem-bers will learn correct technique for each exercise. We will also discuss how to establish an effective at-home strength training routine. Participants are encouraged to do the workout twice a week in addition to class for the best results. If you’ve been thinking about starting a fitness program or want to expand your present workout routine, this simple and effective program is a great place to start. Appropriate weights will be dis-

(Mar. 12, 2013 ) Whether you are new to CSAs or a seasoned veteran, this workshop will be an informa-tive and educational addition to your locavore knowledge. CSAs and local farming pro-vide a direct connection to the source of your produce and encourage a more conscious connection to your impact on the food system, as well as providing you with the best tasting and most nutritious food out there! The instructor will discuss the basics of CSA structure, the challenges, advantages, and risks associated with supporting locally grown produce, and the ways you can make a statement with your food choices. There will be time for questions and answers with the instructor who works at Belmont Acres Farm and is an advocate for local agriculture.

NEW EVENING WITH THE CHEF—Samira’s C.M.S. Samira and Rageb Hamdoun Teacher’s Café $28 Tues. 7:00 –9:00 pm 1 wk. (Apr. 23, 2013 ) Join chef/owners Samira and Rageb Hamdoun as they demonstrate the techniques of making a variety of Middle Eastern specialities. They will prepare wraps, spreads, and gourmet dishes using their recipes for hummus, baba gannoush, Egyptian eggplant salad, fava beans dip, and their speciality, muhammara.
