It took almost six months of negotiation with the two banks to acquire their positions and secure the deed in lieu of foreclosure from the prior owners. The acquisition was approved in a vote by Club Members in May. Through intense negotiations, the Club was able to acquire the Mountaintop Lodge for slightly more than the value of the four com- mercial acres on which the three buildings sit. The land borders Lake Naomi Residential Properties on two sides and another commercial property on the third side. It was critical for the Club to acquire the property at the lowest possible number in order to assure that the acquisition and costs to reopen the Lodge do not exceed the $695,000 maximum approved by Club Members. Once appraised in value at well over one million dollars, the Mountaintop Lodge closed in Decem- ber 2008 after the divorce of the prior owner/operators and the dramatic downturn in the economy. Efforts to rehabilitate the Mountaintop Lodge are already underway. With electricity restored to the building, efforts have turned to restoring the plumbing which was vandalized during the almost three years the Lodge was closed. A very wet basement and surface mold on the main floor are also being addressed. The Club will be updating the Members on a regular basis and the Club plans to announce the open- ing date for the Mountaintop Lodge at the earliest date possible. While the Lodge is being rehabili- tated, the Club requests that Members refrain from going there. This is an active construction site with all of the inherent risks. The Club will schedule a series of Open Houses for Members and their guests as soon as the buildings are determined to be safe for Members to occupy. So stay tuned and we will keep you informed on this exciting addition to life at Lake Naomi-Timber Trails. Get Ready to Respond to the Membership SurveyThe Club is putting the fi nishing touches on a comprehensive Membership Survey that is sched-

uled to be released to the Membership on Friday, October 7, 2011. The Membership Survey is a critical step in the Club’s ongoing strategic planning and long range facilities planning process being spearheaded by the Club’s Long Range Planning and Ad-Hoc Strategic Planning Committees.

The McMahon Group, a national club consulting fi rm headquartered in St. Louis, has been re-tained to assist the Club with the Membership Survey. The McMahon Group previously assisted the Club with the 2002 Membership Survey as well as with presenting the Community Center Project for consideration of the Membership and ultimately the successful vote that permitted the Club to move forward with that project.

The 2011 Membership Survey will be provided to Club Members in paper format. Members will also be provided with a link to use if they choose to answer the survey electronically. Members will also be able to access the survey through the Member’s Only Section of the website. Couple and family memberships will have the opportunity to provide two responses to the survey.

The survey will be anonymous, with all competed surveys, both paper and electronic, being re-turned directly to the McMahon Group. Survey responders will be asked their membership number for control purposes, but the membership number will never be tied to any of their responses. The Club will never have access to the individual responses, only to the compiled responses.

It is extremely important to the Club’s future planning that as many Members as possible respond to the comprehensive membership survey in order for the Club to get the best possible assessment of the Member’s current level of satisfaction with the Club as well as their needs and desires for the future of the Club.

Should you have questions regarding the comprehensive member survey, please do not hesitate to contact Consulting Manager Jeff Evans by email: [email protected] or by telephone: 570-646-9191, extension 111.

Club Completes Acquisition of Mountaintop LodgeThe Club has successfully acquired complete ownership of the Mountaintop Lodge located on

Route 940 in Pocono Pines. It took almost six months of negotiation with the two banks to acquire their positions and secure the deed in lieu of foreclosure from the prior owners.

The acquisition was approved in a vote by Club Members in May. Through intense negotiations, the Club was able to acquire the Mountaintop Lodge for slightly more than the value of the four com-mercial acres on which the three buildings sit. The land borders Lake Naomi Residential Properties on two sides and another commercial property on the third side. It was critical for the Club to acquire the property at the lowest possible number in order to assure that the acquisition and costs to reopen the Lodge do not exceed the $695,000 maximum approved by Club Members.

Once appraised in value at well over one million dollars, the Mountaintop Lodge closed in Decem-ber 2008 after the divorce of the prior owner/operators and the dramatic downturn in the economy.

Efforts to rehabilitate the Mountaintop Lodge are already underway. With electricity restored to the building, efforts have turned to restoring the plumbing which was vandalized during the almost three years the Lodge was closed. A very wet basement and surface mold on the main fl oor are also being addressed.

The Club will be updating the Members on a regular basis and the Club plans to announce the open-ing date for the Mountaintop Lodge at the earliest date possible. While the Lodge is being rehabili-tated, the Club requests that Members refrain from going there. If you have questions regarding the Mountaintop Lodge please contact General Manager Robert Jones via email: [email protected] or by telephone: 570-646-9191 extension 112.

Membership Sets RecordMembership in the Lake Naomi Club stands at a

record high of 1604 (this is the total number of Mem-berships including single, couple and family). Membership for the same time period in 2010 was 1573. Membership at the end of 2010 stood at 1596.

The work of the 200 plus yearly Club Volunteers has permitted the Club to continue to be successful even during this very diffi cult economic period. Thanks to these volunteer Committee and Board Members and with the ongoing fi nancial support of the entire Membership, the Club has positioned itself with a top amenity package, modest debt when compared to the quality and value of the amenities and reasonable annual charges.

Congratulations to all Members on this great achievement. But the work of the Club to stay on top is on-going. It is a very exciting period as the Club prepares to celebrate its fi rst fi fty years of operation in 2013 and at the same time is deeply involved in planning for the continued success of the Club for the next fi fty years.

Second Annual Winter FestivalMark your calendar. LNC’s Second Annual Winter Festival is scheduled for Friday,

January 27, 2012 to Sunday, January 29, 2012. Last year’s Winter Festival was a HUGE success and the Membership/Marketing Committee is happy to sponsor it again. The weekend will start off with a Kick Off Night at the Community Center. Special activ-ities that are in the planning stages include skating, story time, arts & crafts, games, kids competitions, building gingerbread houses, special night for the kids at the CC, special night for the adults at the LNCH, Après Ski Happy Hour, Sunday Breakfast Buffet, Horse drawn wagon rides, cross country skiing, sledding and snowman contest. The Temporary Membership fee for a family will be $50 for three days and all guest fees will be waived this weekend. The guest limit will remain in effect with four guests per Family Member-ship per day. Members are all invited to participate in this fun fi lled weekend. Invite your friends and family members so they too can enjoy all the activities.

Last call for your PhotosDon’t miss the opportunity to enter the

2012 LNC Calendar Photo contest. The deadline for the photo contest is October 15th. After the 2012 calendar is devel-oped, Members will have the opportunity to vote for their four favorite calendar pictures online at the Club’s website. The Membership/Marketing Committee will be awarding four $50 Stored Value Cards for the calendar pictures that receive the most votes from the Members. Be part of the creative team and share your favor-ite Lake Naomi – Timber Trails picture. Remember– you can upload your digital pictures using the Club’s website. Visit the Members Section of www.LakeNaomi-Club.com and select 2012 Calendar Picture Submission from the Online Offi ce drop down menu. Pictures can also be submit-ted to Laura Altemose, Communications Manager, at the Administrative Offi ce.

Club Beach ProjectsThe 2011 season proved to be very exciting for the new Club Beach projects.

Carolyn Keiper and her team did a great job from day one with the Boat House Café. Management anticipated the new concept would be popular, but the business far ex-ceeded our expectations. Members used the new patio, the inside eating tables and the pickup window for the food service. The pager system to let the Members know when their food was ready was also very successful. The pizzas, wraps, salads and sandwiches were well received by all Members. The Frozen Yogurt Bar was a smashing success. Frozen drinks will be added in 2012 to further enhance the Member’s experience.

Like anything new there are always ways to improve the operations. The Manage-ment team along with the Clubhouse Committee and Sailing Committee will be re-viewing the summer of 2011 at Club Beach to see what areas can be improved. Some areas that are being looked at: more supervision on the beach, keeping the lifeguards on until 8:00 PM, opening the duster bar at 1:00 PM instead of 11:00 AM and not permitting children at the bar.

Some Members felt that the bartenders did not check all Members for their Mem-bership ID’s. The reason that not all Members were asked to show their Membership ID was that the bartenders Liz, Cheryl and Dana all worked in the Clubhouse and personally know our Members by name. However next season it will be advertised that everyone must present their Membership ID to purchase a drink or open a tab.

Limited live entertainment during the summer was very successful. Management would recommend keeping light music on Wednesday nights in August. All amplifi ed music will end at 10 PM.

Some Members have requested the installation of hand railings on the paver patio steps leading down to the beach and on the retaining wall. Management saw no chal-lenges with not having the railing this summer mainly due to having a zero beach entry on both sides of the beach. Management feels the railings would take away from the beach interaction but will continue to review.

New for next season, Management will be clearing the Bar when Club Beach is cleared due to lightening sightings. Servers will offer indoor dining to the Members during times storms are becoming imminent. Many Members assume they are safe under the roof line of the Bar, however that is a myth.

These 2012 changes to Club Beach will only enhance the already positive experi-ence the Members enjoyed with the new additions. As the Committees revise the guidelines the Club will keep you posted.....

Many of you have taken the time to experience the fl avorful menu op-tions available at the Clubhouse this season. As most of you all know Chef Will Allfather has assumed other responsibilities within the Community and through a very thoughtful selection process I am pleased to announce Chef Paul Guthy as our new Executive Chef. Paul’s extensive experience has shown through in the Clubhouse behind the scenes. A former military man Paul has successfully operated a high volume kitchen with maximum effi ciency. Chef Guthy comes to us from one of the Pocono Mountain’s most awarded restaurants; Andrew Moore’s Stone Bar Inn which has been rated “Top Restaurant in the Poconos” for many consecutive years. Addi-

tionally Chef Paul has successfully operated the Pump House Inn; again an award winning dining facility! Again I am pleased to announce Executive Chef Paul Guthy as your personal culinary professional!

Also new to the Management Team at the Club-house is our Food and Beverage Manager Stephen Kish. Stephen brings his hospitality experience to us from the Hilton Hotel Corporation where he has served in different capacities from Food and Bever-age, Rooms Division and General Management. Ste-phen’s belief in the core values of hospitality added to the already comfortable atmosphere of the Clubhouse. I am proud to have Stephen on board with his tireless dedication to the Membership and Clubhouse Staff.

The Management Team would like to say thank you for a superb season and for all of your great sugges-tions which have assisted in making this Club the Best! A special thank you goes to the Clubhouse Com-mittee for all their hard work.

As always, I am looking forward to more great ideas and more excit-ing events here at the Club.

Peter Koryttko, Clubhouse Manager

Farewell to Our International StaffOnce again all good things must come to an end. It was another wonderful

season at Lake Naomi Clubhouse and thanks to all the service staff Team Members. This season was a great run as the International Staff worked side by side with our year round staff. The variety of cultures added a bursting medley of fl avors to our melting pot that we have all grown to love. We invite all the Members to join us in bidding bon voyage to our International Staff. It was certainly a great joy working with them. Their experience and expertise have been a great addition to the Clubhouse. Our most heartfelt thank you goes to Wendy Wakefi eld (South Africa), Astrid Jacobs (South Africa), Adrienne Sandor and Lennard Pannkin (Germany), Carlo Vilchez (Peru), Dennis Joormann (Germany) and Jesper Antonsen (Denmark). The Clubhouse was able to professionally serve the Members with the dedica-tion of these exceptional young men and women! This International Work and Travel Program is an integral part of Clubhouse operations and without this type of program the Clubhouse service would not be possible. On behalf of Peter and myself I would like to bid…….

Goodbye! Adios! Auf Wierdersehen! La Revedere! As a new addition to Lake Naomi Club, it has been a pleasure working

with all of the Members and Staff at the Clubhouse. After my fi rst summer with you, I look forward to many more to come. Trivia Night, Rockin’ on the Beach, Independence Day Picnic and the other events have made my job exciting and rewarding. I hope the Members continue to provide ideas and feedback to improve and add to the success of the Lake Naomi Clubhouse. Thank you and stop in to see us soon!

Book ClubThe Book Club meets regularly on the second

Monday of the month at 1:00 PM at the Community Center and is always open to new participants. Everyone is welcome – even if you haven’t read the book. The discussions of course talk about the book, writing style and if it was favorable to everyone’s tastes, but does not give the plot away. This is a great way to get intro-duced to a variety of books that you may never have looked at otherwise. Oct. 10 - 1 PM - Movie “Cherry Blossoms”Nov. 14 - 1 PM - “Little Bee” by Chris Cleave

Lake Naomi – Timber Trails Spring Garage Sale The Activities Committee of LNC has been contacted by quite a few people

in the community to put together a garage sale for spring of 2012. We are now in the beginning stages of planning. It will be held on a Saturday in June. The site has not yet been determined, but will be outside of the community open to the public. Start now to gather your things together for the sale. You will be reading more about this throughout the winter. There will be a charge for the tables, and it will be up to you to man your table on the day of the sale. It should be a fun day and we can all start out with a clean house and clean closets for the summer of 2012. It will also mean a little money in everyone’s pockets to go and buy something you would like at the third annual “Lake Naomi-Timber Trails Fine Arts and Crafts Show” another project that is run by the Activi-ties Committee! Remember: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!”Mah Jongg

Arts & Crafts ShowOur show has come and gone and the re-

sults are everything we were hoping for. The Activities Committee would like to thank the community for the support you gave to this project. This community should be very proud of what you have done for the food bank. Not only did you give a small donation when you walked though the door, but the vendors gave 5% of the monies they made that day to the food pantry. We had approximately 1,200 to 1,300 people attend the show. The turnout was wonderful! All the vendors loved this show, love our community and would love to return again and again. We are thrilled to present the Top of the Mountain Ecumenical Food Pantry with a check for $6,025.00. Thanks to each and every one of you and we look forward to seeing all of you and your friends again next year. The date will be Saturday, August 4, 2012 - mark the calendar today! Once again, thank you, thank you!!!

Family Halloween FestiFallBring out the whole family to join us in

celebrating the beautiful fall colors and spooky fall nights with this new event. On Saturday, October 22nd at the Logan Steele Community Center we will have an outside carnival with games, crafts, bouncy house, climbing walls, and picture station. You can bob for apples, have a cookout meal and don’t forget to jump on a tractor drawn hayride which can lead you to the Haunted Forest! There will be a Costume Contest for the kids, or the whole family can enter the car in a Truck-or-Treat decoration contest, and it wouldn’t be fall without an Apple Pie baking contest. After the dark the FestiFall will continue as the Haunted Forest will become a place not for those faint of heart. Activities will start at 4:00 PM and run to 8:30 PM.

For more information, a full schedule of events or contest guidelines call the Community Center at 570-646-8585.

The Socialites The Socialites is a newly formed

social group initiated in the summer of 2010 to provide a forum for single members of the Lake Naomi Commu-nity to organize social activities for a previously underserved group.

Many of the organized club activities in the Community are attended by cou-ples and families. The Socialites has provided a much welcome forum for single members to socialize and plan a variety of activities.

Since its inception last summer, the group has held a number of cof-fee events, cocktail and dinner parties hosted by club members, a luncheon and casino day at Mount Airy Lodge Casino, Texas Hold’um Poker lessons and playing event and dinners at the Lake Naomi Club.

Our thanks to Marie Badaracco, Es-trid Jones and Pat Roche for hosting cocktail and dinner events at their love-ly homes, to Jane Brown for hosting our two Poker nights, to Mark Currrall for his outstanding poker instruction, to Bill Gamble for coordinating the 2010-11 winter-spring events, Diane Girlamo for coordinating our summer events and Joyce Greenberg for co-ordinating the 2011 Labor Day beach party menu.

The Socialites would like to expand its membership and we hope singles in the community will contact Kelly Swingle at [email protected] if you would like your name add-ed to our mailing list.

Fitness NewsThe fi tness department was very busy again this summer.

Record numbers of participants joined the group exercise classes again this year. Thank you all for your support. We love to hear your suggestions for new classes and be sure to let us know your favorites so they can continue. Look for current class schedules at the front desk of the CC.

This year the fi tness department hosted many very successful events. In July young-sters and adults participated in the LNC Triathlon. They swam, biked and ran in Timber Trails on a beautiful Saturday morning. We are very proud of all participants who took part in this challenging event. LNC welcomed celebrity master trainer, Shaun T to the multipurpose room for an “insane” workout! Ninety people got the workout of all workouts on July 10th. Shaun was very impressed with our facility and promised to return next year…incentive for you to work hard all winter and be ready next summer. In August we hosted the third annual Tour de Naomi. This was a 10 mile bike ride through the beautiful LN-TT Community. It was a perfect late Summer morning and all 36 participants fi nished in one hour or less.

Be sure to check out Circuit Training offered by Jeff Husick. Jeff has been introduc-ing Members to the Fitness Center with his complimentary orientation. He is offering a FREE Circuit Training Program again this Fall. Join Jeff in the Fitness Center on Thurs-days anytime between 5:00-7:00 PM. Sign up in the Fitness Center.

Look for details on our Fall Turkey Trot to raise funds for Toys for Tots on Thanks-giving weekend. We will use the Community Center Leisure trail for a brisk 3 mile Run/Walk. A great way to burn off the turkey dinner and pumpkin pie!

Community Center MaintenanceThe Community Center is scheduled to be closed for major maintenance each year the

So think of Lake Naomi and Timber Trails when you are making your New Year’s Eve plans! All of the fi nal details are being worked out so keep watching Refl ections and www.LakeNaomiClub.com for more information.Platform Tennis Season is Coming!

Did you know Platform Tennis was created to replace tennis play so greatly missed during the months of inclement weather. With cooler temperatures coming your outdoor play is not over! Lake Naomi Club Members should be gearing up to play Platform Tennis at the Logan Steele Community Center.

The Platform Tennis court is designed to be skid-resistant with a heating system underneath to melt the snow and ice. The court is one fourth the size of a tennis court and is enclosed by a twelve foot high taut wire screen which is an enclosure as well as play area. Yes, the Platform rules state you’re permitted to play the ball off the fencing walls which is a major difference from traditional tennis and very fun!

This sport is easy to learn and suitable for men and women of all ages and abili-ties. The APTA (American Platform Tennis Association) offers both Junior and Adult League and Tournament play in all populated areas including Philadelphia, New York and throughout New Jersey.

Platform is often referred to as the best kept secret in outdoor recreation, which the Lake Naomi Club Members have right here at the Community Center. Racquets and balls are available for check out at the Reception Desk. Athletic shoes are the only other item required to play, however, eye protection is highly recommended. All Mem-bers are permitted to play and there are no court fees associated with Platform Tennis. Generally speaking the courts are available for walk on play, but reservations can be made in advance by contacting the Community Center receptionist at 570-646-8585. The Reception Desk also keeps a Platform Highlights sheet as well as the Offi cial Rules for Members who wish to use them. Additional information can be found on the APTA website at www.platformtennis.org or by contacting tennis professional, Bobby McKee. Bobby and Richard ran 2 platform clinics at the end of the summer and would be happy to share their knowledge to any Members with questions on the game. Bobby is also a contact for anyone interested in purchasing their own platform equip-ment. He is most easily contacted at [email protected]. Administrative Offi ce Closed Sundays

Starting October 16th the Administrative Offi ce will be closed Sundays through February 26th. The Administrative Offi ce will resume the seven day a week schedule starting Sunday, March 4th. To better serve the skiers and snowboarders, ski vouchers will be sold at the Community Center starting early December. The ski vouchers will then be available for purchase any time the Community Center is open through the end of February. Start your ski weekend early by purchasing your ski vouchers at the Community Center Friday Nights until 10:00 PM.

Lake Naomi Tennis Club Championship Tournaments

As the 2011 tennis season draws to a close, we would like to recognize our Club Championship Tournament players. At the Adult level, we again used the two-fl ight format and had many new players join the compe-tition. The Adult Singles Tournament was held in its entirety over a single weekend sparking much commentary on the pros and cons of conducting the competition in this fashion. All other tournaments were held over a two-weekend period. We had numerous spectators for all rounds of play and especially great attendance for stadium court fi nals. Several categories in the Junior Tournament were skipped this year due to lack of entries and we hope to have more of our young players partici-pate next year. Recognition and awards for all tournaments were given on Sunday, August 14th at our End of Tournament Celebration held at the Community Center pavilion. All of the consolation winners, fi nalists, and winners of the 2011 Adult and Junior Club Championship Tournaments are listed below:

Tennis Fall Season Operating Hours

The Timber Trails Tennis Complex is closed for the season. The Recreation Tennis Courts will continue to be un-locked from 8:00 AM until dusk until weather conditions no longer permit.

The Lake Naomi Tennis Center Pro Shop will be staffed from 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM on Saturdays and Sundays through Columbus Day. Court reser-vations for weekend play may be left on the Pro Shop answering machine at 570-646-7580 and will be reviewed on Fridays at Noon. Please leave your name, all the Members on your court and a number where you can be reached if there is an issue with your request.

When the Pro Shop is not open, courts may not be reserved for use but will be available for “walk on” play. The Pro Shop door will notify which courts are unlocked and available for Members and their eligible Guests to “walk on.” Members are reminded to bring their Membership ID and to abide by Club Policies regarding Dress Code, Court Usage Guidelines and Court Etiquette. Members are also asked to sign-in at the podium by the Pro Shop door to show accu-rate court usage. After Columbus Day some of the Har-Tru courts may be left for Members to continue with “walk on and self maintain play”, depending on the freeze-thaw cycle. Please note restrooms will be unlocked during “walk on” play. We hope you enjoy your Fall tennis play. Tennis Talk

It’s hard to believe the main tennis season has come and gone… it seems we just got started and then it was time to shut things down.

The entire McKee Team who are involved with providing the tennis services for the Lake Naomi Club members want to thank you all for your support and participation in our programs. The enthusiasm displayed for the great sport of tennis by the LNC Membership is very motivating to us all which increases our desire to enhance each player’s tennis experi-ence.

I hope you will be able to play of-ten during the “off-season” and look forward to catching up with you again soon. Bobby McKee

Tennis Committee Update At the end of season Tennis Committee Meeting this August a few key decisions

were made and worth sharing. The Adult Singles Club Championship Tournaments will go back to a two weekend

format. The Adult Doubles will take place over one weekend. The dresscode trial for collarless shirts will not be accepted for 2012. Men and boys will

be required to wear shirts with collars, staying with the long standing tradition at LNC.Additional information on either topic can be discussed with any Tennis Committee

Member or by contacting Meredith Sensenig at the Community Center 570-646-8585 or at [email protected]

Exciting News Lake Naomi is now offi cially an Oakley retailer. The Tennis Proshop is the fi rst area of sales to carry Oakley glasses and

apparel. Oakley is a premium product of the highest quality and durable sports apparel. Oakley will also embroider their apparel with the LNC Logo. Why not have the best available for our Members? If you have interest in specifi c glasses or apparel please feel free to contact Meredith Sensenig.

2011 Ladies Team Tennis ResultsThe 2011 Ladies Team Tennis competition had sixty-six regular players and twenty

substitute players rounding out six teams for fi ve great weeks of play. Team captains Mary Buono, Nancy Dressel, Stacy Frankel, Jacquie Kelley, Naja Slipsager and Allison Umbricht did a fabulous job organizing and managing their teams to a down-to-the-wire fi nish! The Wonder Women were announced as the 2011 winners at the Team Tennis Luncheon held at the Lake Naomi Clubhouse. All the ladies enjoyed a variety of deli-cious entrees while celebrating the camaraderie and competition of a successful season. The complete listing of team scores below shows just how close the race was. We hope all the ladies enjoyed the Team Tennis season and will return next year for another season of competitive play.

2011 Duster National RegattaLake Naomi Duster Sailors held

their 66th Annual National Regatta over the July 16th-17th weekend, which for those of you paying attention was a month earlier than the traditional mid to late August date. The switch in schedule this year did affect some of the typically well attended events of the weekend like the Friday night sail measuring and the Duster Dinner, but those in attendance on the water for the races weren’t affected and en-joyed the day just the same.

Final skipper placement for the two day regatta were as follows:

1st Place: Allen Rodriguez was awarded the Admiral Halsey Trophy for taking fi rst place in the Regatta.

2nd Place: John Whipple3rd Place: Jay Stevenson4th Place: Rich Daggett5th Place: Dean NeelyThe Butts Cup

was awarded to Katie Stevenson for having the best skipper’s score un-der the age of 19.

Congratulations to all who sailed and placed.

A side note. The LNC Sailing Association met on Monday, Sept. 5th and the Duster Fleet Captain announced they would be moving the Duster Nationals beck to August next year in hopes of bet-ter participation. Please refer to the LNCSA website at www.lnsa.org in early 2012 for exact dates.

Last Sailing OpportunitiesSailors don’t miss your last chance for sailing

in the 2011 Sailing Season. On Saturday, October 8th sailors will be gathering for an informal social sail to enjoy the lake’s fall beauty. No registration is necessary for either date, however an email sent to [email protected] would be appreciated, just so we know about how many boats to expect. There will be a scheduled Safety Boat Operator from noon to 4:00 PM on the 17th but none on Oct 10th since there are no races that day. Start times both days are Noon at Club Beach near the sailing marina. Enjoy the late season sailing!

Junior Laser Sailing planning for 2012Early planning is underway for a Junior Laser Sailing

Program in summer 2012. Class will meet in the slot used for A Fleet the last two seasons, which is 5:30-7:30 PM on Wednesdays. There will also be weekend sailing incorporated into the program as well as guest instructors and special topics

including race rigging, boat care, etc. Students interested in participating should look for additional information in future Refl ections.

Members with Laser Sailboats not being used are encouraged to consider donating them to the Club. In exchange for your boat you will receive boat rentals at no charge for the next fi ve seasons. Rentals are transferable to guests and are not limited, mean-ing all boats in the fl eet are available.

For any questions regarding either boat donation or the future Laser program, please contact Meredith Sensenig at [email protected] or at the Community Center by calling 570-646-8585.

RC Laser Regatta RC Laser Fleet #9 held its annual Summer Regatta Saturday, September 10th, which

was a reschedule from its original rained out date of August 13th. 6 skippers squared off at the bank end of Lake Naomi (near the Administrative Offi ces)

for 20 races beginning at 10:00 AM. Light winds made for a small course but the beau-tiful day was enjoyed by both sailors and spectators alike after the many weeks of rain brought on by hurricanes and tropical storms charging into the northeast.

Racing was tight throughout the day with Sue Neely sailing consistently well and John Whipple holding onto the best score until near the end when Bob MacNeill edged past with his fi rst place fi nishes in the fi nal races.

Final standings for the Regatta:Bob MacNeill, took fi rst place. John Whipple second, Sue Neely third, Dean Neely

forth, Rich Daggett fi fth and Sandy MacNeill sixth. A reminder to all that RC Sailing continues year long even over the winter months when

sailing moves to the CC Pool every other Sunday at 8AM beginning December 4th. For additional info on RC Sailing, including their winter Regatta please visit the Sail-

ing Association website at LNSA.org.

Golf Notes 2011 certainly has been an interesting year

with the weather being very unpredictable and harsh at times, but despite the weather we had a great tournament season at Timber Trails Golf Club! We had many highlights to our tournaments, Bill and Carol Maute captured their third Timber Trails Memorial in four years. Marcia Nichols won another Ladies Club Championship and the Match Play Title. Mike Zilligen won his fi rst Club Championship and Jim Stuckey captured his fi rst Match Play Championship. There were also three hole in ones recorded by Members this year. Ellen Gwirtzman made an ace on our second hole at Timber Trails, Jim Fee recorded his fi rst career hole in one on number four at Timber Trails. Eileen Rossman made her fi rst career hole in one on the ninth hole at Mount Airy Golf Club.

As the weather gets colder, there is no reason why your swing needs to get cold as well. We hope to keep the fl ags out until October 30th, so come on out on those warm

days and play a few holes. The Golf Center is open Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 8:00 AM-5:00 PM; Friday and Saturday 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM until Columbus Day at which time we will stay open Saturday and Sunday 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM until October 30th. And don’t forget the Golf Simulator which is set up at the Community Center all winter.

The Unplayable Ball- Rule 28 in the USGA Rule BookThe Ball may be deemed unplayable any place on the course except when the ball

is lying in a water hazard. Penalty of one stroke. The player has three options:A. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot which the original ball was played.B. Drop a ball within two club lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but no nearer the holeC. Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be droppedKnowing the rules is certainly a benefi t to the player and can help you shoot lower scores!

Community Garden Harvest PartyOn August 27th Club Members celebrated the success of

this year’s second growing season in the LNC Community Garden. The Members shared dishes made with items they grew in their gardens and participated in a scavenger hunt. Prizes were awarded for the Biggest Zucchini, Roundest Tomato, Best Pepper and the scavenger hunt winner. Plans

for the 2012 season are being planted now. Forty four member families participated in the community garden this season. They learned from garden and nature experts at weekly seminars, made new friends and had a very productive year. The kids in the camp program also worked in the garden and learned a thing or two from our naturalist, Charlene. Please call Kelly Swingle at the Community Center 570-646-8585 if you are interested in a garden box of your own to get on the waiting list for next year.

Save Your Membership ID CardsIf you plan to use your home in Lake

Naomi and Timber Trails between Labor Day and May 1st of 2012, it is impera-tive that you save your 2011 Member-ship Identifi cation Cards. These cards are required in the Fall, Winter and Spring when you or members of your family are utilizing any of the Lake Naomi Club fa-cilities or to participate in the winter ac-tivities at the Community Center and the Lake Naomi Clubhouse.

2012 Membership DirectoryInclusion in the Membership Directory is an optional service available to all Club

Members. In the Spring of 2012 the new addition of the Membership Directory will be printed. Please take a moment to review your listing in the Directory. Do you still have your land line phone in LN-TT?

Fall Trout StockingAs part of the annual stocking program conducted

by the Lakes Committee, brown and rainbow trout will be stocked in the Upper Tunkhannock Stream above and below the lake on Saturday, October 8, 2011. Any Members and Guests interested in assisting in the stocking should meet at the Administrative Offi ce at 8:00 AM. Please note, although the Club does stock trout, there are specifi c regulations regarding trout fi shing that must be followed. Trout are strictly catch and release from the fi rst Saturday in September through the third Sat-urday in February. There is no trout fi shing from Saturday, March 31, 2012 through the

2012 Season Opening Day on April 14th. All fi sherpersons must wear a current Membership ID along with their Pennsylvania Fishing License (required of all 16 years of age and older). Watercraft Storage Alert

The Boat Rack, Canoe Rack and Floating Dock rental period extends through Monday, October 10th (Columbus Day) for the 2011 Season. If you wish to use your watercraft after Columbus Day, it must be moved off the boat rack and onto a hitching post at West Beach, Pebble Beach or Tall Timber Lake. Any watercraft left on boat racks after Columbus Day or on Club Property after

November 12th will be removed and stored by the Club until they are claimed by their owners. The service fee for watercraft removal is $50.00 for the fi rst week and if the watercraft is not claimed within seven days, an additional storage fee of $10.00 per week will be charged up to a maximum of $200.00. If the watercraft is not claimed within three months, the Club may sell or dispose of it.The Club’s Budget Process

Not many Club Members understand the long and arduous process involved in devel-oping the Club’s annual budget and we thought a brief summary would be useful and enlightening.

The goal of each year’s budget is to match revenues with the total of operating expens-es and capital expenditures, resulting in a zero bottom line. Capital expenditures include: 1) capital enhancements that are additional property and equipment or improvements to existing property and equipment and 2) capital reserves or replacements which replace existing property and equipment.

The process begins in August. The Committees are asked what they believe is desir-able in the way of capital enhancements for the following year. Management also puts together its proposed list of capital enhancements in areas not covered by a committee, such as maintenance, administration and security.

Capital replacement items are also listed at this time. These come from the Club’s Capi-tal Reserve Study, as updated by Management each year. Since 2003, capital reserves have primarily been funded through a partnership with the PPCA and the TTCA. Any defi ciency between the total reserves needed and this funding is the responsibility of the Club.

This list of capital items is priced by Management and presented to the Finance Com-mittee in September. Finance reviews the need for each item, questions alternative solu-tions and modifi es the list accordingly. The revised list is then presented to the Board of Governors for further review and modifi cation.

As this process is proceeding, Management is preparing a preliminary budget of revenues and operating expenses. Finance provides the Business Manager with some assumptions such as the estimated number of new members and continuing member-ship numbers. Any estimated shortfall from the current year is included as an operating expense in the next year. A dues structure is created which will ensure that projected revenues equals the total of operating expenses and capital items. This budget draft is presented to Finance in early October for a detailed review and modifi cation. Finance is greatly concerned about maintaining the proper balance between dues increases and services to our Members and cuts are usually made at this time.

In late October a joint meeting is held between the Finance Committee, the Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees, at which time Finance presents the Budget for discussion and approval. Once approved, modifi cations may be made based on actual results during the months of September through December.

Any estimating process is extremely diffi cult and subject to error beyond the control of the estimators. As you can see by the above process, many involved and experienced peo-ple participate in development of the budget in an attempt to limit and mitigate any errors.

How has Club Membership fared in light of the economic downturn?

Regular Membership as of September 11, 2011 hit a record number at 1604. For a similar period in 2010, the number was 1573 and for 2009, 1576. The Club also experienced an increase in Special Family Membership, from 937 in 2010 to 1060 in 2011 and an increase in Temporary Membership from 695 in 2010 to 773 in 2011.

With the downturn in the economy, are properties still selling in Lake Naomi and Timber Trails?

Yes. Through September 13, 2011 the Timber Trials and Pocono Pines Community Asso-ciations have issued sixty-three total resale certifi cates (required by Pennsylvania law in order to transfer property in a Planned Community). Ten of these are for houses in Timber Trails, forty-nine are for houses in Lake Naomi and the remaining four are for unimproved lots in Lake Naomi. These numbers are very strong when compared to other areas of Monroe County.

Preservation Project has SprungThe Naomi Pines Spring, believed to be the old-

est surviving structure in the vicinity of Pocono Pines, played an historic role in the development of the region. While it has been neglected for decades, the stonework is in surprisingly good condi-tion and perfectly recognizable. Yet many Lake Naomi Club Members pass the site each day totally unaware of the heritage that lies just a few yards away.

Originally built to service nearby farm-houses with abundant water from artesian wells, the Spring was probably constructed soon after the Civil War. The quality of its water was a selling point when the Naomi Pines House was built across the street in 1888, creating a tourist industry in Pocono Pines.

The Spring was acquired by Lake Naomi Club in 1963. The Spring site is located across the street from the Jubilee and just northeast of the Miller’s Stone House. Rou-tine maintenance has kept the Pump House

an attractive landmark at the entrance of Lake Naomi. It stands in sharp contrast to the adjacent Spring site, which has become hidden by tall grass, trees and brush.

A group of Club Members sprung the idea of preserving this Spring . The preserva-tion plan proposes three objectives. First is recognition of the historic signifi cance of the structure, and appropriate conservation of that heritage. Second is creation of an attractive area, a small “vest-pocket park” open for Members and guests who share an interest in history. Third is elevation of safety and environmental elements to the high standards observed throughout the LN-TT Community.

Within the last couple weeks the Spring Preservation project has sprung to life. The Club Maintenance Team has done some of the heavy lifting and a group of hardy volunteers have begun the debris cleanout. In the spring piping and drainage will be completed along with a layer of stone in the streambed. The fi nal touches of some landscaping, two benches and an interpretive sign will complete the site. When you visit the site refl ect on how times have changed yet the natural beauty of Lake Naomi remains the same and continues to draw people to the area.

One of Our Own Sacrifi ced for Operation Enduring FreedomOn August 8, 2011 Sergeant Alessandro Leonard Plutino, 28, was killed

by enemy forces during a heavy fi refi ght while conducting combat opera-tions in Paktiya Province, Afghanistan.

Sgt. Plutino was a Team Leader assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Hunter Army Airfi eld, Ga. He was on his sixth deployment in support of the War on Terror with three previous deploy-ments to Iraq and two to Afghanistan.

“Sandrino” is survived by his mother Dianne Hammond (Club Mem-ber), his father Sandro Plutino, his sister Brenna Plutino of Pitman, NJ and his fi ancé Natalie Layton of Glassboro, NJ. His mom recalls the happy days he enjoyed at Lake Naomi – Timber Trails and how proud he was to be a LNC lifeguard in the late 1990’s.

Sergeant Alessandro Leonard Plutino’s military career awarded him with many metals including the Purple Heart. He selfl essly lived his life for others and distinguished himself as a member of the Army’s premier direct action raid force, continuously deployed in support of the Global War on Terror and fought valiantly as he served his fellow Rangers and our great Nation.

As we, the community, take a moment to pause and refl ect on the feeling of loss, a sense of pride arises that somehow the community of LN-TT helped shape this wonderful boy into this amazing man who fought self-lessly for our freedom. A Memorial Picture has been placed at the Com-munity Center in honor of Sandrino’s life and his memory. Thank-you Sandrino, thank-you, thank-you, THANK-YOU!
