Reflections 2011

Foreword

In this splendid publication every class has endeavoured to highlight a range of inspiring events and activities that happened for them at Frimley during 2011. Behind every event and activity is a whole host of organisation and dedication from an extremely professional and talented staff. Congratulations to the production team and especially those children who contributed to the page for their class. This publication is a wonderful way to showcase Frimley to our community and to friends and family throughout the world. This year we will be putting together an online version to allow you see the pages in anywhere, anytime in full colour. Please visit our school website for details.

During 2011 our success story was around the writing and eLearning professional development that was brilliantly facilitated by Murray Gadd and Leigh Johnson. All of our teachers were required to write a success

story about this development that took place for them and the impact it had on the children’s learning in their class. The results have been stunning. In 2012 we aim to take a very similar approach to the key competencies focusing on the Incredible Years and Restorative Practice.

One highlight of many was our term three school wide Rugby World Cup theme and the associated art week and class Rippa Rugby tournament day. Across the school children were involved in a host of outdoor education and physical education activities and our seniors were given a number of wonderful leadership skills opportunities. We even managed to keep up to speed with the development and introduction of the new National Standards. Our PTA won the HDC Blossom Parade Best School Float section with our Rugby World Cup creation and built a new target wall. These are all highlighted on our website www.frimley.school.nz

Here at Frimley we are blessed with an extremely talented staff, a very supportive Board of Trustees and an active and supportive Parent Teachers Association who all have the interests of every child at heart and only want the very best for them.

Finally, thank you for your support. The success of any child’s education is the partnership that is developed between home and school. We are all aware that success only comes when the partnership is strong and we all live by our school vision.

Frimley School Blossom Float

The Blossom Parade was another exciting annual event for Hastings this year, and we were proud to participate in the Parade and show off our Frimley School Blossom Float, our tenth one to date. It was awesome to once again be judged “BEST SCHOOL”.

The construction of our float was truly a team effort, with many families involved in blossom making, and the Frimley School community working together over several weeks to see the project completed. The school takes this opportunity to thank all those parents and friends that willingly gave their time to help construct the float.

2011 has been a special year with the excitement of the Rugby World Cup and the success of the All Blacks as world champions. Our Float featured All Black cheerleaders, children representing Rugby World Cup teams playing in Napier, sporting groups from the school, and lots of McLean Park turf in human form!

Frimley School says “Attitude…Action…Achieve our Goals”.

Art Week 2011Through engaging in the visual arts, students learn how to discern, participate in, and celebrate their own and others’ visual worlds… In visual arts education, students develop visual literacy and aesthetic awareness as they manipulate and transform visual, tactile, and spatial ideas to solve problems. (NZ Curriculum)

During Term 3, we enjoyed planning and creating a wide variety of artworks during our annual Frimley School Art Week. All children were given the opportunity to work on their creations over several days and they experimented with a range of art mediums. Many classes used their adopted Rugby World Cup country as motivation for their art work.

Once again we were fortunate to have the expertise of Rei Hendry, Art Education consultant, who worked with staff and groups of children of all ages throughout the week.

We celebrated a fantastic week by displaying our work in the hall for parents to view over the weekend. Many visitors were amazed at the wonderful range of creations on show in the exhibition.

Footnote DanceTerm 2 started with energy and excitement when for one week, we hosted New Zealand’s premiere professional contemporary dance company, Footnote Dance.

Movement is a vital and active means of supporting learning across the curriculum. It opens doors for the exploration of ideas, builds confidence, and encourages phys ica l awareness and wellbeing.

This group of talented young dancers inspired our children and provided a unique and memorable dance experience for everyone. The chance for students to meet and work with ‘real’ professional dancers does not happen often.

The dancers of Footnote brought another week of ‘magic’ to Frimley School!
