I found this program extremely beneficial and actually would say it was a lifeline that helped me throughout the entire process thus far. January 2016 was Alzheimer Awareness month. The Alzheimer Society continues to work hard to help end the Stigma of Alzheimer disease and related dementias. Help us do this by continuing to refer you patients/clients to us for information and support. The more people we are able to reach, the more we can get them out of the shadows of isolation. Often time’s people affected by this disease are unaware there are such valuable resources available to them. As front line workers, you have the opportunity to link them to the information and support they so desperately need. Currently there are 8,666 individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer disease in Newfoundland and Labrador.
• In 2011, 747,000 Canadians were
living with cognitive impairment,
including dementia - that’s 14.9% of
Canadians 65 years and older
• By 2031, if nothing changed in Canada this figure will increase to 1.4 million
• Women make up 72% of all cases
• 1 in 5 Canadians aged 45 and older provides some form of care to seniors living with long-term health problems
We know that there are approximately 214 cases diagnosed annually in this province and we are receiving on average 4 referrals a month. As we continue to recruit more Health Care Professionals, we hope those referrals will increase drastically. We encourage you to refer your patients and clients to us as much as possible.
