Alfred “Red” Morton, a young man with red hair and a Model T Ford, was the City’s first recreation director who had a passion for sports, kids, and involving the community. From the humble beginnings of running youth and adult softball and basketball programs to the postwar construction projects in 1944 that launched the building of Redwood City’s “Community Park” (now Red Morton Park), parks and recreation has always played a critical part in the lives of its residents.

Today, Redwood City is proud to offer hundreds of youth, family, adult and senior recreation programs and services for tens of thousands of participants – including camps, swimming lessons, art, music, dance, educational enrichment activities, afterschool programs, a multitude of sports, computer learning, social activities, human service support, and Downtown Events (concerts, movies, learn to dance, art shows, special events and more). Redwood City is also committed to creating and maintaining great community spaces that include our 30 parks and plazas and our 5 community centers. These spaces provide opportunities to make important connections–with friends, family, neighbors and the environment. They are also a great place to improve and maintain physical fitness. What better way is there to get great exercise than going to a park and just play?!

On behalf of the staff of the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department, I want to thank you for participating with us, for enjoying what Redwood City has to offer, and for creating more memories together. It’s impossible to be successful alone, and I am deeply appreciative of the thousands of neighbors, partner organizations, non-profits, business partners, youth sports groups, and to the Civic Cultural Commission, the Senior Affairs Commission, the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission, and City Council for the incredible support for the Department.

We will be celebrating our 75th Anniversary not only through the hundreds of events that we already have scheduled in Downtown

and throughout the City, but with an event to be held at the Fox Theatre on Thursday, October 18th. That evening we will also introduce the Redwood City Parks and Arts Foundation – a new non-profit to support the Department’s capital investment and activities for the community. Check out this and all of the planned events at www.redwoodcity.org/parks

October 2012 marks the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department’s

75th year of making life better in Redwood City!
